  1. I am not a Trump fan. On the other hand, I think that the fact that he acts like a crazy person might work to our advantage here. Sometimes a rational player will yield to a crazy player when the game is "chicken." I think that this might also work with North Korea. I also believe that China needs to stop stealing our IP. I have read that this is costing our country as much as $600 BILLION per year. That would be enough to make a big dent in the trade deficit. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/15/opinion/china-us-intellectual-property-trump.html
  2. Arguably China will be rational and try to work out a compromise that reduces our trade deficit. If that happens, I expect a big run up.
  3. That was the best game summary that I have ever seen, Obviously this took a lot of work, and the result was excellent.
  4. You left out the part where Mauer leaves behind five magic eggs that hatch into clones of Killebrew, Oliva, Puckett, Kaat and Johan Santana who are immediately signed to 100 year contracts and who never age. The clones lead the team to 100 straight World Series victories. On a more serious note, these predictions suggest lots of upside for lots of players. I hope that most of them come true. I also look forward to the predictions of TD members.
  5. Moderator note -- there is a lot of good discussion in this thread, but also some bickering. Let's debate the issues without making it personal.
  6. Moderator note -- the discussions regarding drug legalization and racism are being deleted from this thread. I would encourage a separate thread in the "Other Baseball" forum or the Sports Bar.
  7. This seems sensible to me. Has anyone proposed it?
  8. I am not a stat expert, and would like to know more. Is there some stat for runs saved? If so, does it take into account how well a first baseman can stretch and catch bad throws? For example, when Mauer snags a horrible throw out of the dirt, is that included in some stat? And if an infielder has confidence in Mauer, will the infielder experience less stress and make better throws? Do the stats measure this in some manner? I believe that stats are relevant, but wonder if they tell the whole story. I would invite the stat experts to opine, preferably in as simple terms as possible.
  9. That makes me like him, and I will like him more if he saves lots of games.
  10. I have been getting killed since the date of your post.
  11. Moderator note -- please be respectful of other posters. By way of example, referring to other posters as "obtuse" is not respectful.
  12. Another very tough day. I was holding REITs as a hedge against stock market risk, which has turned out very badly. On the other hand I expect them to come back.
  13. Please let us know the next time you have a plan. I have a diversified portfolio and even some of the fixed income got fried. I suspect/hope that you were up today. My sense is that the market will probably come back by the end of the year, but I continue to hedge with covered calls. I tried to buy back all my covered calls from the moment that the market opened today, but could not get my limit prices, even on Wells Fargo (which stinks for other reasons). My takeaway is the the people who are long on calls expect the market to come back.
  14. You believe that the cat is dying? Maybe this is merely a fur ball?
  15. My favorite memory is him signing autographs in Anaheim during his last season with the Twins. He was very generous with his time, making a lot of fans happy.
  16. It appears that there could be lots of breakouts next year, and if the veterans also play well it could be a breakout season.
  17. Moderator note - please keep this discussion on topic. As note above, there are other threads regarding the allegations against Sano. It should be possible for a member of TD to begin a thread that discusses other issues relating to Sano. If you don't like this thread then please do not post in it. We are trying to preserve freedom of speech, while promoting the freedom of each member to begin a discussion about some other aspect of Sano's career.
  18. I will not be surprised if it wins some major awards. Now that I have slept on it, I see more meaning than I did last night. Maybe this article will change your mind -- https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/23/movies/the-shape-of-water-meet-guillermo-del-toro-doug-jones.html?action=click&contentCollection=Movies&module=RelatedCoverage%C2%AEion=Marginalia&pgtype=article
  19. I saw Shape of Water tonight and overall I liked it. I was with my wife and two other women and they liked it more than I did. Things that I liked included the early 1960's setting (especially the cars) and the character development. The story was solid but... [spoiler omitted] On the downside, some of the violence made me close my eyes. Also, I agree with ash that a lighter touch would have been better, but I am told that the movie falls into the genre of "magical realism", so maybe that explains it. As for the erotic elements, I am told that a lot of money spent on the creature costume to make it erotic, but without any hint of male genitalia. My sense is that a significant percentage of women will find the movie erotic.
