  1. This has been debated at great length on other threads. Almost everyone agrees that Liriano is an extremely risky bet. His upside is very high, but the more likely outcome is that he repeats his history and has long periods of terrible pitching. I think that there are strong arguments to sign him now, and strong arguments to trade him now. With 25 strikeouts in 2 games, his stock is soaring, so both his trade value and the amount that he might accept for a multi-year contract are also soaring. This is a tough call, but I agree with you that some offer should be made now, before the price goes up even more. My sense is that Liriano may be getting more mature as he grows older, and he may finally be getting his act together. On the other hand, based on Liriano's track record, I am probably wrong.
  2. If I were a member of the Cult, we would now be winning this game. Please pass the Kool-Ade.
  3. Liriano is not helping his trade value by giving up 2 runs in the 1st. Is he focusing too much on striking people out?
  4. I agree with your second point, but as to your first point, I would like to hear your views as to the following questions. Why not give temporary government jobs to the millions of unemployed people who are collecting unemployment benefits, welfare, etc.? Since they are being supported anyway, why not put them to work repairing infrastructure, clearing brush to prevent wildfires and other useful jobs until they can get private sector jobs? In California, we have big wildfires every few years and the politicians always pretend to be surprised by the billions of dollars of damages. I am angry that we don't have unemployed people (who the government is paying anyway) out there clearing the damn brush so that the wildfires can be minimized. And the same applies to potholes, graffiti and a lot of other problems that these people could be fixing. I would be happy to even pay them extra to do some useful work instead of just collecting benefits. Do you agree that this makes sense?
  5. In my business I have always had 3 employees, because that's how many I need. When my taxes were lowered, I had no reason to hire any more people. I have pocketed the tax savings from the Bush tax cuts, but have given most of it to charities that feed hungry people and that fight for social justice. Most high earners are not job creators. They are executives, professionals, athletes, movie stars etc. If the plan is to foster job creation, there are more focused strategies for encouraging this, such as tax credits for expanding a business that will create more jobs.
  6. Positive for the high earners, and I was being tongue in cheek. I agree with you my friend.
  7. How dare you question the Twins' outstanding medical staff. They took the most scientific approach that they could think of.
  8. I have come to the conclusion that the powerful lobbies will get what they want no matter who wins the presidency or Congress. We will continue to spend more on "defense" than the next 20+ countries combined, and Wall Street will continue to gamble with trillions of dollars of other people's money. The need to raise millions for political campaigning has corrupted almost everyone in Washington, and the Citizens United decision has made it easier than ever before for rich people to elect candidates (Democrats and Republicans) who will do their bidding. And someone who is basically honest like Ron Paul will never get the big dollars, because he would be a genuine threat to the fiction that is our government. On a more positive note, taxes on high earners are the lowest that they have been in decades, so this is a great time to be a high earner (and an even better time to get capital gains and dividend income. But on a negative note, the only way that the government can ever get out of this mess will be with double digit inflation, and when this kicks in, people who invest in fixed income instruments are going to get creamed. It would be wise to stock up on investments that will hold their value when the inflation hits.
  9. The ball was indeed in her space, but she did not look capable of surviving the hit that she would have sustained. The Twins should sell those seats to burly guys with gloves.
  10. Deduno threw a lot of pitches in his 4.1 innings -- 99 pitches.
  11. I have been begging for Butera AND Mauer to do a Tovar this year -- two Tovars in one game would be amazing.
  12. That would be great -- kind of like having an older version of Mike Trout.
  13. At this rate, Deduno will exceed 100 pitches sometime in the 4th inning. If the Twins are far behind tonight, I would like to see Butera on the mound so the bullpen can rest.
  14. There may also be a copyright issue, at least from a very theoretical perspective.
  15. I love your optimism and am praying that you are correct.
  16. Aside from what Thome might do in the shower after the game, i hope that he strikes out and/or grounds into double plays whenever he bats tonight.
  17. Aside from the unattributed quote, this is bad news for the Twins on multiple levels. Hopefully he will recover before the season is over and can be put on the waiver list and be traded to whatever team claims him.
  18. Maybe so, but he had 13 home runs last year in 186 at bats, and had an OPS of .845. Last year was his best year ever, but he does seem to have some talent.
  19. An excellent post. Thank you. Bogaerts is appealing, but according to the Red Sox prospect list, it seems likely that Bogaerts may end up at 3B, like Sano. But if the Twins could get Bogaerts, I agree that this would be a great get. By the time they make it to the Show, Sano (or Bogaerts) could be playing a different position. A team with both Bogaerts and Sano (and Rosario and a few others) could be fearsome. Revere and Mauer get on base then Bogaerts, Sano and Rosario drive them in. Assuming that you are correct that the Red Sox won't deal Bogaerts, I wonder if they might give up Barnes and Owens. Giving up Barnes and Owens (two high ceiling prospects who may be 2-4 years from MLB and who may never make it) for Liriano seems like a fair deal, taking into account that the Red Sox will also need to get Butera so that Liriano can have his personal catcher. Or if the Red Sox do not want to take Butera, then they need to throw in Ranaudo.
  20. Excellent rundown on today's action. I wish that I could see the New Britain outfield in person, but hopefully they will all make it to the Show soon.
  21. This was very informative. Let's hope that as Hicks ages, he will continue to mature and to become more consistent at the plate. This article piqued my interest enough to check Hicks stats for this season and I would note that he has struck out 59 times in 207 ABs against right handed pitchers. Hopefully, he can improve that stat. I remember that when Hicks was drafted, some teams wanted to use him as a pitcher. I wonder whether his defense is adequate, good or great. It looks like this season he has 5 assists and 6 errors. Thanks for posting this.
  22. Luckily, Capps laid only two eggs.
