  1. It's certainly possible. I think one of the Pohlad's at one point said that Ryan was never turned down on a contract request or something to that effect (I don't have a link, I just remember something similar to that was said). So it seems like he never asked to sign a top tier FA or Pohlad is lying. I do believe Ryan was like that. At times it's a good way to be, but there are other times when it's very smart to go for it for the right players. It all depends on whether the player is worth the risk and there definitely are players who are. Also, I agree with your dad and don't believe a burger should be more than $8 and I refuse to eat out anymore since they're all $13 or so nowadays. I've got some TR in me too, I guess.
  2. This is pretty close to what I want to happen. I'd be very happy if something anywhere close to this happens.
  3. There hasn't been much news on it. LaVelle and Darren have probably mentioned it the most but that's not saying much. Rowson was interviewed last week and Meulens a few days ago. There were articles in the strib for those. That tweet is the first time I heard about Shelton actually interviewing, though I knew it would happen eventually. Believe the Hyde news broke this morning via twitter. Don't recall seeing it anywhere else. I've seen Baldelli interview for every other team but was surprised he already did with the Twins. Coverage hasn't been great but I also don't know what to expect out of managerial reporting.
  4. I was fine with the signing because it was a one year deal. And I thought he'd be the Twins best pitcher (pretty sure I put that in one of those prediction threads before the season). That being said, the Lance Lynn from 2017 to now is nowhere near as good as the Lance Lynn from 2011-2015. It usually takes most guys years to get their mojo back after Tommy John surgery (if they do at all) and he's already near the age decline. Lynn is a 4/5 starter now. Expecting anything more out of him is foolish. Those pitchers listed are better than him the last year plus.
  5. Right. I was just making sure you knew that he wasn't lights out anymore.
  6. Just FYI, Lynn was great in his first three starts but is sporting a 7.66 ERA in his last five. His FIP is pretty good in that time, but I think the Yanks would rather have actual results.
  7. I hope Grossman is already decided and the answer is "bye!" If I'm forced to have one or the other I'm picking Mauer every time. Makes no sense to have both when it's hard enough to just have one of them.
  8. I think he'll re-sign for one year. Wonder what he'd be willing to take though? He's at the stage where he may not deserve more than 6M. If he would have had another repeat of last season than he'd be worth more. Money isn't an issue for the Twins next season, but that doesn't mean they should overpay him for his age 36 season when he's not playing 120+ games at 1B. Love the guy though. If he retires, I really enjoyed watching him play.
  9. Slightly earlier than the actual deadline but I doubt it changed. https://www.twincities.com/2018/07/27/mauer-says-he-hasnt-been-approached-about-waiving-no-trade-clause/ Never saw anything about the waiver deadline so not sure about that part, but I'd assume more of the same.
  10. There was a quote from him saying he was not asked to so they never tried to trade him or it was never close at least. I'm guessing they didn't have any Mauer talks because they know Mauer's answer already. He wants to be a Twin for life and it's not hard to believe him.
  11. I don't know what side of the Buxton argument I'm on but I haven't seen anyone happy that Field is up so I'm not sure I get bringing him up. No one wants Field here no matter how they feel about the Buxton situation. Well at least no one but the front office wants Field here, but you get the point.
  12. I saw the same thing. I think it was on twitter but I can't find it. There was also a report that his locker was cleaned out the other day and that he was gone and then all of a sudden he showed up later that day so it's been really confusing.
  13. Not sure this means anything yet as the Red Wings still have games left.
  14. The Twins will have a boatload to spend, whether they ACTUALLY spend it is a different story (and extremely unlikely that they spend it all unless they're getting one of the big boys). I think most realize that. A ton of money is coming off the books though. That's fact.
  15. I believe Morneau had way more minor league innings at 1B than Austin has had and Morneau had a not great defensive reputation when he came up. He worked on it and improved. There's no guarantee that the same happens for Austin, but it could if he puts the work in. https://www.twincities.com/2010/06/12/morneau-is-stepping-up-to-the-plate-for-twins/ I remember Rockies fans being surprised Morneau was as good as he was.
  16. Same. The bullpen usage drives me insane. Also the catering to vets. I like Dozier, but he shouldn't have been deciding where he bats.
  17. That stat surprised me so much that I had to go look. Would be very nice if he's not a platoon guy. This is the first year that he's done that, but the other years the sample sizes are extremely tiny. He definitely should play over Grossman as I think they need an upgrade over Grossman this offseason anyway.
  18. The Twins payroll was 128 or so this year. The Twins would have to be at 135M to spend that extra Hughes money. If they don't go that high, all it did was save the Pohlad's money (or hopefully gives them money flexibility at next years trade deadline). They've also said they don't bank money (what's saved this year isn't put towards next years available money). I think the Twins may end up short of last years attendance levels by about 70K, so revenue will probably be slightly down. And who knows if the Pohlad's will keep allowing them to spend like this. They should but you never know. I think people have said that they'd have to spend something like at least 50 million to even use that extra Hughes money. So they'd have to sign at least one of Harper, Machado or Kershaw. I don't see it happening but it would be great.
  19. As Ashburyjohn said, the Twins could have kept him. He became a minor league FA because the Twins didn't put him on the 40 man roster. If they put him on the 40 man he wouldn't have been able to go anywhere and the Twins would have had three option years before he was forced to be on the 25 man. A player can't just leave the organization and sign with another team (example Lewis can't leave right now and sign with someone else). If the Twins don't add Lewis before he becomes a minor league FA, he's free to do whatever he wants when he becomes a minor league FA. It was the case of the Twins not putting him on the 40 man and allowing him to become a FA and then after free agency he had a better path to MLB via SF than here. Here's an article about it from the offseason: https://puckettspond.com/2017/10/22/minnesota-twins-rule-5-and-minor-league-free-agent-preview/
  20. It was reported that he was offered an extension. Why would a beat writer lie when it's very easy to go to Escobar to confirm it? I'm sure there are ways where beat guys and others who report on the team try to make the team better than they are, but I have an extremely hard time believing this is one of those times. There's zero benefit for the Twins to lie about it. It would make them look very bad.
  21. I don't think anyone wants the players to pack it in, it's just if they lose it's a good thing. We, or at least me, still want the players to try. If they try and fail, it helps in the draft which is very fine by me.
  22. The issue is that Gonsalves just pitched the other day so filling in for Mejia wasn't going to happen. That being said, Gonsalves does need to be up here soon. I'm also happy that Stewart is getting a look.
  23. The only problem I have with this comment is the "why didn't they try to get back one higher rated prospect" part. We have no idea what they did or didn't try. They probably, or hopefully, did try. They just didn't succeed. The other teams have a say in the trades as well. And they can easily say no if they want to. I don't think any team was desperate for the Twins players they received. I thought the Twins got more back than I personally expected in most of the trades.
  24. Probably helped, but he's been decent for awhile. Hard to watch, but not absolutely horrible stats since May (4.12 ERA or so from May to now). That's basically the Lynn I expected to get when the Twins signed him. That being said, really like the trade.
