  1. Not a fan of it. If you get off to a slow start as the Twins and almost any other team have done, your season is done before it starts. While it helps that they will add more teams to the playoffs, it is just playing the games to say baseball exists. It will really mean nothing.
  2. At this point it seems like eliminating the season entirely is the best way to go. What does a 50 game season really mean? Why do it? The short season doesn't really give you the "best" team. Baseball is a marathon of ups and downs. Don't reward the team that gets out of the blocks fast. That being said they should take the time to fix their problems. Both owners and players are being greedy. Both make a ton of money for a game. Yes it is a business but most fans would give anything to have baseball as a "job". I can't put the blame on one side or the other. Each have their agenda and are trying to point fingers and put the blame on the other side. All it boils down to is money. And the fans and the entire game lose.
  3. The DH is not a real position. While I admit it is painful to watch some pitchers hit, it is part of the game and strategy. It also speeds up the game. More chance for the out! Expanded playoffs. This is a tough one. Too expanded and the regular season means nothing. The NBA is ridiculous with the amount of teams. Unless you are the Timberwolves it is hard to understand how you CAN'T make the playoffs. They need to figure out how to make the season NOT go into November though. Watching baseball with a parka on is just not right. Especially when it is the players wearing them! Neutral site World Series. NO WAY! This is part of the magic of baseball. Parks are vastly different. You build your team for your park. As with football it is an unfair advantage when a random team just "happens" to play close to home. The Rose Bowl in college football was a good example. Pac-12 was basically the home team sine the Big10 had to travel so far. Unfair advantage.
  4. There is WAY too much emphasis on home runs. Not everyone needs to be a power hitter. You need guys that can consistently get on base to give you that chance to score. Just relying on home run (or strike out) players won't get it done. Yes, a home run will give you that "easy" run but the best only give you 40-ish home runs a year. If you have a bunch of guys who get on base a third of the time you can manufacture a lot of runs.
  5. Too many teams in the playoffs is a joke. Why play the regular season. No matter the format you will always haves teams that tank. I dislike the one game playoff, but adding a round of playoffs would extend the season far beyond what it should be. Baseball should not be played in November with players wearing sock caps and mittens. There "WILL" be a snow-out some day and I don't want to see the World Series moved to a neutral warm site like football. Reality TV. WHY????? It is also ridiculous for teams to pick their opponents. And all for gimmicky TV special revenue. Matchups based on records is fair. It gives at least a little meaning to the season. It is crazy changes like this that will definitely ruin the game.
  6. 6 runs in the top of the first. 2 more in the second. Our "ace" on the mound. Cake walk, right? Wrong!!!!! I hope they figure out what is wrong with Berrios soon. Maybe they need to rest him for a week or two. But right now he is not our #1 pitcher. I am not even sure if he is #2 or #3!
  7. Thank you for pointing this out. I have been concerned about Berrios the last couple of years and didn't know why or have facts to back it up. To me it just seemed like he was over-rated and really wasn't the pitcher we all thought. I hadn't really associated his troubles with first half vs second half. Hopefully he gets it figured out!
  8. Trade Sano An unpopular choice but I have no faith in him. It's home runs or strikeouts and his fielding hasn't been all that great lately. He would probably be someone who could give us great return in a trade and we wouldn't have to dip into our pool of highly regarded prospects. In general I always worry about the Twins when they make trades. We rarely seem to get the better end of the deals.
  9. I am on the "joke" side of things. There is no doubt the baseball has changed the game. College was complaining about different results made it hard to evaluate players for the big leagues. Changing to MLB baseballs increased their home run rate also. For me watching baseball where a batter either hits a home run or strikes out is boring. No strategy. Every game is just a home run derby. It is emphasized even more with the shift. Players do not try to get on base and hit singles in the hole. They still swing for the home runs. I understand people want to see scoring. They get bored with a 1-0 pitchers duel. They would much rather see a 12-10 slugfest. Butt is sad when you think players like Rod Carew and Tony Gwynn might not even be able to make a team now with the state of baseball.
  10. OK. Sano ended up hitting an important home run. BUT I think he needs to be sent down for a while to work on things. In the last 7 games he has played in he has had 25 at bats with only 3 hits. Admittedly 2 of the 3 were home runs. He only walked 4 times and had 17 strike outs!!! You can throw in one error during that time too. You have to begin to wonder even with his power "potential" if he is more liability than asset.
  11. Sano is the one to worry about. 0 for 7 with 5 strikeouts!! He left 5 guys on base?? Not a good showing when you don't even put the ball in play. At least he didn't make an error this game.
  12. With a shaky bullpen you don't want to give away free runs because of errors. 5 errors in a games is extreme. Sano is the one who worries me. He just had a bad error in Boston and now this. Plus he strikes out a lot offensively. He needs a reset.
  13. Trying to save money to sign Kimbrel? Keuchel?
  14. They actually should get rid of the DH in both leagues. It would speed up the game. One quick extra out. I understand the reasoning for the clock. I just think it is tricky and it depends how they implement it. Half the problem is the batter out of the box adjusting his glove or whatever. When does the clock start? Does it reset if the pitcher steps off the mound? Lots of questions. Roster size increase means more rookies not playing just sitting on the bench. Not sure if that's a good thing. The big problem they are trying to solve is pace of play. The game has evolved to home runs or strike outs. That means longer at bats. Less sacrifices/bunting means longer at bats. Less complete games because of pitch counts. The game has changed and not necessarily for the better
  15. For one I find it hard to believe the Twins would go after either one. For two I would have a difficult time if they signed Machado. While he may be a very good player, I do not like the attitude and bush league play. Watching some of the things he did last year and the attitude afterwards when questioned about them was disgusting. I hope the Twins do not sign someone like that.
  16. This to me is like the "new math". Every 5 years or so, school systems across the country have read the latest book and decide on a math shake-up that will make all the kids love and learn math. It never works and they go back to actually memorized math tables. Rinse and repeat. That is similar to the Twins situation. They are trying something new and gambling that it works. All the latest trends are statistic-based analytics. That being said I think it is trending too far in that direction. You still need some of the old methods. There needs to be a nice mix!
  17. I think Buxton might be able to "figure it out". It is depressing when you look at all the players we gave up on too early and see how they are doing today with other teams. Hindsight is great! The major concern to me right now is his health. Will he be able to play a full season? This might also be just a fluke and he will never be hurt again. There is great reason financially to extend him now with all of his question marks. If you wait until you know for sure we can't afford him! That is baseball. A lot of gambling!!
  18. I understand your thinking/reasoning, and on the surface it makes sense. Unfortunately I feel this just leads us down a path of being in permanent rebuild mode. We were expecting prospects to come in a few years ago and turn us around. Your strategy is basically saying the same thing with a new core of prospects. Not saying you are wrong and I'm not sure of the exact right thing to do. If we get lucky all the prospects will gel and hit their potential and be superstars. Reality says not likely. Bottom line is that is is a very tough juggling act!
  19. I like Kepler. As things stand currently I would rather have a consistent above average Kepler than a Buxton/Sano who can't be counted on to be on the field and who knows what you get when they are?
  20. While I think Mauer will want to come back and play one or two more years, I do not believe Mauer will be invited back. The FO has made some "interesting" decisions regarding players lately. I do not believe Mauer is in their plans and will not be swayed by his popularity or desires.
  21. I wonder where the Twins are heading. We do not have the big players where we can actually get quality in return. Everyone we trade is for future minor league prospects. What this leaves us with is a team of VERY young unproven players where we are hoping they all gel together so we can make a playoff run. Dozier, while struggling, is still one of the better players the Twins currently have with the exit of Escobar and Pressly. Next year we will have all position players (with the exception of Mauer) being filled with young players that we "hope" are major league ready or will finally "turn the corner". The percentage of prospects that actually turn out seems low and how many years are we talking before they can actually make a contribution? Does this mean the Twins are now at the start of their 5 year rebuilding plan? I hope not.
  22. I do believe as Falvey stated that Polanco "made a mistake". I do not believe that Polanco didn't know what he was doing. It seems to me if an organization really cared about this, they would be the ones controlling supplements/etc that the players are taking. There is no reason this could not be done. Better control over what was really in the bottles could take place. That being said it does make you wonder if anyone really cares. Players or organization. The team wants to win. The players want to play. Any edge they feel they can get a lot of them will take. I do not believe the majority of people using are caught. To me that is a sad.
  23. First of all, be glad we are not the Pirates organization. That is the definition of "cheap". I have no problem with the Twins not spending wildly on players. It is a gamble. They hae put money out on players in the past. Some have worked. Some have not. It is easy to look back on what was or was not done and say the Twins "should" have done something different. That being said, there is inflation. Ticket prices rise. Concession prices rise. TV contracts rise. The Twins payroll stays flat. The payroll should go up appropriately with the rising costs that are passed on to the fans. When it does not, we are more more for a more inferior product. I do not believe the Twins should spend a ton of money on one player. That will not help. It is a "team". A pitcher is only out there once every 5 days. A batter is up once every 9 at bats. We need balance and need to be smart in making a well-balanced team. If there was unlimited money (ie Yankees) we could just throw money around like water and see what happens. We don't have that luxury.
  24. The problem with all the proposed solutions is that we are just talking a difference of seconds. Yes they add up but overall they are only thinking of saving 5 minutes or so a game. That is nothing. I see two problems which have been somewhat addressed already. - Time between innings. It is a money thing of course. Less time. Less commercials. Less revenue. At a change get the pitcher out there. 5-10 warmup pitches. Batter up. - The cat and mouse between pitcher and batter. Batter is out of the box adjusting gear. Steps in. Pitcher shakes off signs. Steps off the rubber. Batter steps out of the box. Adjusts gear. Rinse and repeat. Too much!!! Batter needs to step in the box and be ready. Too much gear on them anyway. Don't allow the constant stepping out and adjusting.
  25. I live in Oregon so events don't help me. This is a GREAT place to keep me up-to-date on Twins news. I look at it daily. I will admit I only look at Front Page news. I rarely go to the side bar to scroll through blogs even though as I now look there are interesting topics. Partially this is a "time" thing. The main stories give me the information I want/need and there is no real reason to head to the blogs. I am mostly interested in news/facts/happenings more than in speculation, what-ifs, who is best, etc. I understand the time that must be put in to keep a site like this going. The way it is today is fantastic for me but I understand for the writers there needs to be better motivation. It is a tough problem and I hope it can be resolved. There are great writers, articles, and information in this site that is much easier to obtain than anywhere else. Good luck. I would hate to see it fold.
