  1. Unless the consequences are positive that would be punishment... Should Santiago, Vargas, and Rosario face these consequences as well?
  2. I haven't seen anybody argue that he was good last season, but do you think those numbers are indicative of the pitcher he actually is? Do you really believe he is a worse pitcher than any of those that you listed? I don't. I have no problem with him earning a rotation spot. He didn't pitch well at all last year, but neither did a few of the "locks," which is the point most are making. He is playing for Puerto Rico in the WBC; saying he doesn't care enough to be in ST is completely unfair. As a side note, Santiago is on the roster as well, so he shouldn't receive credit for caring. Vargas and Rosario are also members of the team. His time spent at AAA and the numbers he put up there would suggest its time for him to pitch in the majors, ie MLB ready.
  3. Fingers crossed that you know more than I do...
  4. I wasn't a big fan of resigning Santiago this offseason but I can't imagine any of those guys being cut before the end of the month. Idk if I would advocate for cutting both of them (although if they could travel back in time and use that 9 million they spent on Santiago to bring back relief help I certainly wouldn't complain.) I agree with the sentiment about the young pitchers. There is still part of me that worries about whether the Twins will actually pull the plug on guys like Hughes/Gibson/Santiago if and when its necessary for the younger arms to join the rotation.
  5. I'm not sure what is confusing about the post. "Its a mix of our best guys and Hughes," That little "and Hughes," at the end is enough to give pause. When he's already penciled in after 2 spring training starts and hasn't shown he has major league stuff that seems a bit premature. I said nothing about it being unfair to Duffey but since you brought up getting obliterated last season I think Gibson and Santiago fit nicely into that category.... The point is that a rotation as bad as the Twins shouldn't already have 4/5 of it "locked in," this early in the spring, but like I said, given the way they operate it isn't at all surprising. FWIW the argument that players have to see the field based on salary is past its prime. That money is a sunk cost the second they ink the contract. The goal is to put the best players on the field, not the highest paid ones.
  6. Completely disagree. Can't say I'm shocked given the preferences he has shown the past few years as manager. New manager, same Twins; some things never change....
  7. Careful....I hear warning points are assessed for this discussion....
  8. Gotcha, the innings angle makes much more sense. Given Molitors bullpen usage I would say you have reason to worry. Honestly I would go with the "Pick em," group for reasons already stated; you have a revolving door available if usage or ineffective become issues.
  9. "Would you rather see a guy like Jake Reed, Mason Melotakis, Trevor Hildenberger, Nick Burdi or (insert your favorite of the Twins 46 relief prospects here) getting abused in a mop-up role in the majors or pitching in the back end of the bullpen in the minors?" I'm not sure I understand where this argument is coming from. Is a a guarantee that any of the above options are destined to struggle through a sharp learning curve? I think not, but that is what seems to be implied and if that is the case, then wouldn't you rather have them take their lumps in a season like this?
  10. My OP was literally a response to another comment that said none of these games matter. That is discounting his performance. I'm have prognosticated anything. All I've said is that his performance thus far does have some meaning. For a guy trying to get back onto the roster and make the team out of ST these games are important. Sorry, but they matter. He's fighting for a job. Like I said before, for guys like Mauer and Dozier the games probably are meaningless, but for fringe players every AB of every game matters.
  11. The point is that you can't have it both ways. If Park or another fringe player was struggling right now that would be held against them, but if they're hitting the ball well its because they're facing inferior competition and you shouldn't read too much into it. Yes I agree that these guys aren't seeing prime MLB pitching every AB during ST, but they won't in the regular season either. Look no further than the Twins staff for evidence of that. Like I said, take it with a grain of salt. ST performance doesn't necessarily matter for established players, but it certainly does for guys like Park. Their performance shouldn't be as severely discounted as some are implying.
  12. It counts, just not as much as later ST games or obviously regular season games. A huge gripe last year was that the Twins went into ST with their rotation already decided. I voiced my displeasure that Nolasco, who picked up where he left off the previous season (ie pitching poorly), was gifted the starting spot ahead of both May and Duffey. I certainly wasn't alone in that sentiment. The games need to be taken with a grain of salt but they certainly aren't meaningless as is being suggested.
  13. Is everybody being close-minded or are you being overly optimistic? Is it impossible for him to repeat 2014? No. Is there even a remote possibility that happens? Probably not. Nobody was jerked around more than Danny Santana? Are you serious!? He was one of the WORST players in baseball the past two seasons yet he was constantly penciled into the starting lineup despite that fact. The ONLY reason he saw the field as much as he did the past two seasons was Molitor's odd attachment to him. I don't believe anybody on this board is happy to watch players or the team fail. He was an obvious candidate for regression, one glance at a comparison between his rookie year and minor league career was enough to see that he was likely to come back to Earth, and he has. Those stats would certainly be a regression to the mean if you include his minor league track record as well. If Molitor is forcing Santana to be a slap hitter is he also in his ear telling him to never draw a walk and continue to boot balls on the infield and take terrible routes in the outfield? I think it is much more likely that he is the player we saw in the minors and each of the past two seasons than it is that 2014 was the real Dantana.
  14. I hope you're having supplies delivered to the island while you're out there....
  15. I said the same thing at the end of the season when he cited the lack of fundamentals learned in the minors as the reason for struggle.
  16. Hopefully he lives up to the billing. I can't lie though, I cringed a little at the title of genius, especially since the Twins have yet to play even a ST game under him.
  17. Its unfortunate that Santiago doesn't have to "prove," himself.... I begrudgingly agree with the May over Berrios only because I feel this is his last chance. The question is whether this is a legitimate chance or more lip service like last ST.
  18. ^^^^^ How about "What to make of the Twins offseason,"......Yuck
  19. ^^^^ If the manager with supposedly only one year left (fingers crossed) is allowed to make those decisions then this team is never going to improve...
  20. This ALL DAY..... If leadership really is that important why not hire some of those ex players going to ST (Hunter, Hawkins, Cuddyer, ect...) as a permanent bench coach or some sort of clubhouse role. That might make too much sense though, so they better just sign another "veteran," player and toss out a couple unknowns in a season that is lost before it even starts. That strategy has definitely worked out the past few years.....
  21. So the Park DFA wasn't about money, bench flexibility, or clearing up a logjam at a position, all of which were posed as reasons for the move. It was all about bringing in a veteran player well past his prime, and seemingly at the expense of younger players in the organization. Can anybody think of a more "Twinsesque," move? Bravo......
  22. I'm glad Napoli didn't reciprocate the interest...
  23. That Tim Stauffer comparison isn't helping to make sense of the Park DFA.... If one of the relievers is getting the boot i would rather see Boshers go and Tonkin stay.
  24. "and the subsequent moves they failed to make following it." Kind of an important piece to leave out.... Vargas was a massive question mark (still is) and Sano was the heir to 3B (probably still is) so there was room. They had holes everywhere, I'm not going to knock them for attempting to plug one. If you view the move in isolation and say its the reason there is a logjam then yes, you absolutely are ignoring what lead to the signing and the moves that followed.
  25. Yeah I agree, as a whole the situation is a mess. I think a lot of people look at the Park signing and see it as the cause of the logjam but I feel that is ignoring where they were at the time of the signing and the subsequent moves they failed to make following it. For sure, the D is a hot mess. I'm with you on Santana being shown the door but I would stop at saying he should wear a glove. If we're getting rid of one of that trio based on their defense its Grossman but they need a 4th OFer. Hanging onto all 3 long term makes no sense, you're right. But, neither does throwing out potential long term talent to have roster flexibility on a 90+ loss team; especially when they're holding onto players that have no business being on the 40 man. That is what is frustrating for me. I would assume they're hoping to sneak him through waivers but who really knows right now....
