This could be said about any MLB player the Twins sign. You have no idea how that player is going to perform in the future... At least Santana has been consistently good for the last 8 years.

Article: Where Are We Now?
SF Twins Fan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There is no way Cleveland will trade within the division especially when they're still looking like the best team. Also, I don't believe MadBum has shoulder issues.... he fell off a dirt bike two years ago but he didn't have any issues with it last year. He was hit by a line drive that fractured a bone in his hand last year.- 112 replies

The only way I'll be ok with this is if it's for a Nelson Cruz or a good bullpen piece.- 112 replies

If this is correct, which I hope it isn't, I wouldn't expect the Twins to do anything significant any time soon.- 112 replies

Article: Where Are We Now?
SF Twins Fan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nobody said the Twins should push all their chips in and only go for the playoffs in 2019. The Twins can make some significant moves that are beneficial for 2019 and beyond. There are multiple players they could sign to longterm contracts are there are multiple players they could trade for that would be here for longer than just 2019. What they're saying though is that 2019 the AL Central will be extremely weak, the Twins have a ton of payroll flexibility, there are good options in FA and in trades that should allow the Twins to make some significant noise in 2019.- 112 replies

Since this is potentially his last option year it makes even less sense to move him to the bullpen. Use this year to determine if he can be a starter and if he sucks this year then move him to the bullpen next season. If the Twins were a potential World Series contender I could understand moving Romero to the bullpen because he has the potential to be a dominate reliever or closer but the Twins aren't anywhere close. If they end the offseason and have added a legit #1 or #2 to the rotation and have added a good 2nd basemen and at least 2 other pieces to the bullpen I'm all for moving Romero to the bullpen. Unless they do that though it doesn't make sense to move him.
-
First off he doesn't turn 24 for a few more weeks, so he's yet to play his age 24 season. Second off he missed two full seasons so he's had two less seasons to pitch compared to other players his age. Also, because he missed two full seasons he hasn't yet been able to repeat any league, which would allow him to potentially dominate that league. Not every player is going to be lights out the first time they go through a league. Also, 6 of his first 7 starts in the MLB were very good. He got blasted in his 6th start and then came back with another good start.
-
Actually, I'm not missing the point at all but it seems like you are. He has steadily increased his innings over the past couple of seasons. I could care less that he starts to wear down in his last few starts of the season while he's building up arm strength. He should now be able to go a full season without a pitch count and people want to limit him to the bullpen? What's the point? Sure, he could be great in relief but why not at least give him a full season without any restrictions to prove if he is a starter or not? Why would you want to take a player who has the potential to be a #2 - #3 in a rotation and move him into a significantly less valuable role when he's still 23 years old? That makes zero sense.

He only threw 90 + pitches in 8 of his 16 starts in AAA this season. Of those 8 games where he threw 90 + pitches here are his inning totals: 6, 5.2, 7, 7.2, 7.2, 6.2, 8 and 4. Those look like good totals to me. Below is a link to all of his AAA starts and it's clear he was wearing down at the end of his season. He's obviously going to need to make some adjustments in the MLB but he's only had 11 starts. I'd like to have him more than a full season before we declare he can't be a starter. http://www.milb.com/player/index.jsp?sid=milb&player_id=622864#/gamelogs/R/pitching/2018/MINORS

I think people are completely forgetting why Romero has only pitched ~ 5 innings per game. He basically missed two full seasons in 2014 and 2015, so it has taken him some time to build his arm strength back up. In 2016 he pitched 90.1 innings, 2017 he pitched 125 innings and in 2018 he pitched 146.1 innings. There is no reason to think he won't increase his innings pitched in 2019 to ~ 175. He's basically been on a pitch count / innings limit every game to make sure he could finish the season.

I'm not really interested in moving Romero to the bullpen or having May start. He's was mediocre as a starter to begin with and has shown a lot of promise in the bullpen. Plus the Twins have a ton of 4 - 5 type starters so they don't need another one. I'd love to see Kepler at first against righties which would allow Cave to start in right. I would also love to see Astudillo get regular playing time next season. Sounds like he's playing well in during winter ball.

Article: Twins Claim 1B CJ Cron
SF Twins Fan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seems like a low risk waiver claim but not sure I fully see the fit since he hits from the right side. I would have liked a lefty to platoon with Austin. It also doesn't give the Twins much flexibility. -
Article: Offseason Blueprint: Hey Big Spenders!
SF Twins Fan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
http://www.startribune.com/who-is-available-in-free-agency-to-help-twins/499368011/ Some interesting comments in the above Strib article by La Velle E. Neal III that could indicate they are looking to spend some money. These two quotes about position players are interesting. Maybe they're looking add Donaldson at 3B which would move Sano over to 1B. I'd also love Gonzalez. “We’re going to remain open-minded to that,” Falvey said. “If we were to find a perfect fit at third base, would that open up a different place where Miguel [sano] could play? “I would anticipate position players being probably more of the focus in the early going, I would say.” -

Article: Baldelli’s the Guy, Now What?
SF Twins Fan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree with reducing the number of games during the season but I don't agree with bringing it down to 100. The owners would never go for it because they would lose out on a ton of money from attendance and sponsors. I could see them decreasing to 148 - 152 games. Start the season a week later and give the teams an extra day or two off each month. They could also increase the roster size to 26 players and have a set number of position players vs pitchers - make it 13 each.- 63 replies

Article: Baldelli’s the Guy, Now What?
SF Twins Fan replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is one thing I will never understand. If professional players can't get themselves up for a game they're driven to play and are getting paid huge amounts of money for they shouldn't be on the field. Maybe it's just the way I'm wired but throughout my playing days, whether it be baseball, football, lacrosse or any other sport I never relied on any coach, manager or even team member to get me up for a game or make sure I was mentally ready. For me, when it was game time I was ready to go.- 63 replies

Why shouldn't I be down on Gordon? Two seasons ago he was great for the first half and then faded drastically in the second half. Last season he was good for a month when he started in AA and then was awful in AAA. Yea, maybe he'll rebound in 2019 but will he ever put up a full season of numbers? He'll be 23 on October 24, so he's still fairly young but until he puts up a full seasons worth of solid to good numbers I just don't see him lasting in the majors.
-
With how deep the Twins farm system is I truly hope they make some trades to improve the major league team. I would say the only two untouchables are Royce Lewis and Brusdar Graterol. It would hurt to trade Alex Kiriloff since he could be fast tracked from AA to AAA and then eventually the Twins, but if he brings back a significant return I'd do it. It's too bad Nick Gordon had such an awful year in AAA because his trade value has to be at an all time low at this point.

This. 100%. The Twins going into the offseason have so much payroll flexibility that there is zero reason not to spend money on the bullpen to improve it. I'd like to see one of the top bullpen pitchers signed and then at least one more quality bullpen pitcher signed. Make the moves necessary to improve this team so the manager doesn't have to rely on one or two pitchers who then get overused by midseason.
