According to ESPN, the Twins only have 39 on their roster now. I agree with SD that they don't need to get to 39 after the additions. If they do sign someone, they can pick who to drop. I started with who to add. My definites are Sano, Meyer, Rosario, Gilmartin, and Oliveros. That's 5. We could have some interesting conversations about Adam, Wheeler and Cole Johnson. I don't think Adrian Salcedo has gotten enough mention with his peripherals. And Levi Michael might force himself into the conversation with a good AFL. As of now I would go with Adam and Salcedo in additon to the first 5. 5 + 2 - 1 vacancy = 6 Burton, Schafer, Colabello, and Florimon are easy cuts as is one of Deduno or Pino. I'm guessing it's Deduno since Pino has better control and two option years. Ibarra seems like nothing special, so after dropping him the Twins are down to 40. That's what I think the Twins will do.

Where We Are, Where We Are Going, By the Numbers

Well done, Andy. Hopefully the picture would have been brighter with a full year of development for Sano and Buxton. I do think you understated how bad the defense is. -

Mid-season scouting reports on prospects and near-prospects would be great. Has Pinto's catching improved? What's the word on Mitch Garver? -

I just discovered the box scores under Schedule and from there I can get to the recap. Now I can stop going to ESPN first. And now your guys with the Minor League Report can stop writing up the MLB game. It doesn't fit the subject and often it's not especially when done. -
Article: Will Kurt Suzuki's Offense Continue?
Lonestar replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My biggest concern about Suzuki (besides blocking Pinto) is that the Twins will play him too much, wearing him out. That has happened in the past. The Twins need a much better backup, preferably one with some versatility like Pinto or Hermann. On a side note, it's interesting that the Twins have trusted the development of Meyer and May to Pinto and Hermann. I wonder what Meyer and May have to say about Pinto's catching. -
3 Twins Prospects Who Have Been Much Better Than Their Numbers Indicate
Lonestar commented on Boone's blog entry in Blog Boone
What he said. I was aware of Kepler's numbers but those pitchers surprised me. Well done. -
I'm glad you mentioned FGCU becauseFreeland has been comped to Florida Gulf Coast University's Chris Sale. In partdue to the handedness and the command/control, but also the arm slot and the slider. He might be a poor man's Chris Sale but he does have someprojectability left. Not a bad comp. With Hoffman sidelined, the first four look more and more [to me] like Aiken,Kolek, Rodon, and Jackson in some order. Boras would have to be factored in for anyone drafting Rodon and Jackson.

In 2012, the average velocity for his fastball was 92.9 MPH and for his change-up 87.2. In 2014, the average velocity for his fastball is 90.3 MPH and for his change-up 85.5. He could be on the bubble if/when the Twins go back to 12 pitchers.

2014 off-season Minnesota Twins top 40 prospect countdown: 16-20

Wow. Thorpe at 18, Walker at 17, Kepler at 16. Radically different than most lists. It will be interesting to see who you have in front of them. -
2014 off-season Minnesota Twins top 40 prospect countdown: 16-20
Lonestar commented on Thrylos's blog entry in Thrylos' Blog - select Tenth Inning Stretch posts
If he does those things, he's a front line starter assuming he can handle the innings. All he needs to do is improve his control. That might require simplifying his delivery, but I wouldn't want to take away from the plus things he has. -
Twins Starting Pitching Trade Targets?
Lonestar commented on Brad Swanson's blog entry in Kevin Slowey was Framed!
No need to trade for anyone with two or fewer years before free agency at this time. Free agency is the place to turn this year. I agree with Garza -- a frontline starter for hopefully 4 years. Kazmir for 2. I would have added Randy Messenger for 3 years. -
The 2013 Boston Red Sox: Worst to World Series
Lonestar commented on twinsfan34's blog entry in Blog twinsfan34
There are huge differences. The Red Sox only had 8 starts by starters with an ERA as bad or worse than the Twins average starter ERA of 5.26. As you noted, the only starters the Red Sox added were Dempster (who had a 4.64 ERA pitching half of his games in Fenway) and Peavy. They got huge turnarounds from Bucholtz, Lester, and Lackey. The Red Sox already had in place Ortiz, Pedroia, Ellsbury, Saltalamachia and Nava (who was a surprise, at least to me). To that mix they added Victorino, Drew, Napoli, and Carp. They got above average production from every position but 3B. The Red Sox had many more piece in place than the Twins do. Some will say the difference between the Twins and BoSox will be payroll. But besides the number of pieces in place, the difference seems to me to be the willingness to maximize the roster. If you want to know what it would look like if the Twins this off-season like the BoSox did last year, read some of the threads on this site. -

Waitin' With the Wings: Andrew Albers
Lonestar commented on Cody Christie's blog entry in North Dakota Twins Fan
What is the scouting report on Albers? This is the Scout.com's scouting report from 2010 Albers features a fastball that sits in the high-80s and works off its impeccable command – forcing hitters to put the ball in play. He loves to throw inside, particularly to right-handed hitters in order to get their feet moving before going soft away. He throws both a four- and two-seam fastball, working the four-seam inside and the two-seam and its sink away. He has better control of the four-seam fastball and can place it to both sides of the plate. The two-seam has natural run arm side and is used to induce ground outs. Coming into the system, Albers threw both a slider and curveball. The slider is his better pitch, showing some good depth. He needs to work on tightening it up and getting consistency within the strike zone. The hammer is loopy and long – a pitch that will likely be dropped if it does not show concerted improvement. Albers also has a plus changeup that was a show-me pitch in college. He really found a grasp of the pitch when he entered the system after not using the pitch very often in college. A different grip allowed its natural movement to race to the forefron. It has the makings of a true out pitch. Scout.com: Scouting Padres Prospect Andrew Albers -

OK, I've got to work on proof reading. I just can't paste from Word. 1. Did you support trading Justin Morneau before last season’s trade deadline? Yes. Especially if it would have meant getting Allen Webster, Rubby de la Rosa, and one year's salary savings. [And Yes, I play one year's salary savings both ways.] 2. What do you think Morneau’s slash stats will be in 2013 if he plays half ofhis games at Target Field? Based on his 2012 numbers without June: .276/.349/.468/.817 Phil Mackey thinks .279/.353/.496/.849. I was thinking something like that before last September. That would likely take some bounce back in his vs LHP split. Imagine what Morneau's line would be like if he played half of his games in Camden Yard or Rangers BPIA. 3. What do you think Chris Parmelee’s slash stats will be in 2013 if he plays half of his games at Target Field as a regular? .270/.340/.470/.810 FWIW, Phil Mackey says .260/.338/.432/.770 4. What do you do with Parmelee if Morneau is still a Twin? I assign him to Rochester. To me, he's unacceptable in OF. As is Willingham, when I have a perfectly good DH slot for him. 5.Do you support trading Morneau this off-season? What would you expect to get in exchange? Yes. Because he's healthy now. I don't know if he will be healthy at the deadline. I think I would target Baltimore and Tampa Bay, but I don't pretend to be an expert on trade values. The Twins have two things Tampa Bay needs desparately. A legitimate 1B available and money so they can afford the 1B. Could they turn Morneau and $11M into Wade Davis, Ryan Roberts, and what? The Orioles have a surplus of pitching. They don't necessarily need the money because they are talking about pursuing Josh Hamilton -- how unlike Peter Angelos? Imagine though if they got Morneau for no $ cost -- just Jake Arietta. And maybe Brian Matusz. 6. Do you support trading Morneau later – before the next trade deadline? The only reason for not trading Morneau if he is tradeable (not injured) is if the Twins are in contention. He might be worth a draft compensation pick, but then he would be worth a lot in trade.

On 11-Oct,Seth asked: “When can the Twins compete again?” How you answer that question affects the answer to the question: What to do with Justin Morneau? [Not tomention Josh Willingham.] Or is it the other way around? So let’sdiscuss Justin Morneau – again. 1. Did you support trading Justin Morneau before last season’s trade deadline? 2. What do you think Morneau’s slash stats will be in 2013 if he plays half ofhis games at Target Field? 3. What do you think Chris Parmelee’s slash stats will be in 2013 if he playshalf of his games at Target Field as a regular? 4. What do you do with Parmelee if Morneau is still a Twin? 5. Do you support trading Morneau this off-season? What would you expect to get in exchange? 6. Do you support trading Morneau later – before the next trade deadline? JustinMorneau is what he is – past his prime, injury-prone, relatively expensive at$14M per year in a contract that expires after 2013. At the same time, he is better than any 1Bavailable in the free agent or trade market. And thereare at least 6 teams in the market for a 1B: Baltimore, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle,Tampa Bay, and Texas. Of course some ofthose matches work only if the Twins are willing to eat some of that $14Mcontract. And that could be the Twins’secret weapon. After all, one year’ssavings is likely to go to the Pohlads. On 25-Aug,shortly before the waiver trade deadline the Dodgers traded with the BoSox for1B Adrian Gonzalez when their stated preference was Justin Morneau. In order to get Gonzalez, they had to eat alot of bad contracts and give up Allen Webster and Rubby de la Rosa. Is that a fair trade or an example ofdeadline frenzy? http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/majors/trade-central/2012/2613953.html We don’tknow what the Dodgers were offering for Morneau. Given the bad BoSox contracts eaten, I thinkthe Twins could have turned Justin Morneau + Jamey Carroll + 2 month’s salaryinto Webster and de la Rosa and 1 year’s salary savings. Does that seem reasonable? Would you have done that? _____________________________________________________ In 2012,in his second year coming back from concussion and other injuries, JustinMorneau appeared to be regaining some semblance of his All-Star form in Julyand August – at the trade deadlines.
