  1. The postseason requires 4 starters excepting the very unlikely event that a team sweeps every series. And even then someone would be starting on short rest twice. As h2oface points out, we don't have to consider who the 4th starter would be until game 4 of the ALDS but we still need to set our postseason roster to account for that. So who is more likely to pitch well on that night, Colon or Mejia? Or Santiago? Or Gee? It's an interesting question.
  2. Two things to mention regarding the weather, even though I won't be attending myself: 1.) Be prepared for a long evening at the game. Both teams, the umpiring crew, and MLB want this game to be completed if at all possible. The game will not be postponed or shortened except as a last resort. So bring plenty of $ to make sure you keep up with food and (especially) beverage needs. 2.) Bring an umbrella and/or a rain poncho and/or any other appropriate gear to deal with rain. There is a provision in The Laws Of Baseball Superstition that the more fans there are with rain gear and the more rain gear there is on hand the less likely it is to rain. Have a great time! I did the last two years and I'm sure I would have today as well.
  3. Sorry to break your heart about this but games played to break ties are part of the regular season. Any wild card team to win the WS will always have exactly 12 postseason wins.
  4. He pitched much better down the stretch than in the first part of the season. And he was certainly far better at closing than Belisle is now, which was the point of my post.
  5. One point that should be made: John Gibbons may have lost this game for his team. In the 5th inning when his starting pitcher suddenly lost his control it was obvious that something was going on with him physically. Anderson kept looking at his fingers and Dicknbert mentioned that he has had blister issues in the past. Gibbons should have gone out and removed him on the spot and since it would have been due to injury a reliever could have completely warmed.
  6. School night. Minnesota tradition to stay away from the game.
  7. I have done the math, and I update my records daily. Caveat: I did not include Toronto in my calculations and it's possible they could catch up. Going into tonight's games, and not considering Toronto, the minimum number of wins that would qualify a team for the first wild card berth is 79. In this instance there would be 4 teams with 79 wins. If we assume that the Yankees win the first wild card berth, the minimum number of wins that would qualify a team for the second wild card berth is 77. In this instance there would be 2 teams with 77 wins.
  8. Beyond that, the 1987 Twins had home field advantage in both rounds of the postseason. They will have that for none of this postseason.
  9. The pitching staff as a whole, maybe. But 1987 had two legitimate strong starters and a legitimate strong closer. Santana is maybe as good as 1987 Blyleven but we don't have anyone as good as 1987 Viola nor as good as 1987 Reardon.
  10. Much like them offensively. Not so much on the mound.
  11. Dick with a call on the Vargas bomb!
  12. I have only my shelf to blame. (Looked it up on Google.)
  13. C'mon, boys, keep stringing those hits together!
  14. Here's a former Padre player: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gwosddo01.shtml
  15. Well, I'll confess that when I said top 10 I may have used a bit of hyperbole to make a point, but Mauer's catching skills were at a peak and his offense was off the charts. And he probably would have caught 18-20 more games and DH'd in another 2-4 had he been available during April. The fact that he missed an entire month is, to me, the only reason not to consider that season to be one of the best ever.
  16. This still doesn't take into account the many things I referred to in my earlier post.
  17. I don't think WAR is adequate in assessing the impact of a catcher's contributions to his team's success. There are so many little things that catchers do that don't show up in the formula. Good catchers can reduce the number of stolen base attempts. Good catchers call the right pitch in key situations. Good catchers point out flaws in a pitcher's delivery or approach to a batter. Good catchers prevent wild pitches. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
  18. His 2009 season was not only the best in the AL that year, it's probably one of the ten most valuable seasons in the history of baseball.
  19. Now that it's September it doesn't really matter.
  20. That's called parity. Or maybe mediocrity. Either way it's going to make for interesting times.
