  1. You mean Canadian residents drink beer???? Who knew????
  2. This has nothing to do with the second wild card. It wouldn't matter whether it's a 3-way tie for the second wild card or a 3-way tie for first place in a 15-team league with no divisions. Gotta break it somehow.
  3. Every time there's a shot of Francona in the dugout he's got a mouth full of seeds or gum or who knows what. Looks like a hamster.
  4. Eddie, don't flip your glove while making a catch. That can lead to a very embarrassing outcome.
  5. Very encouraging inning by Perkins!
  6. I was at the Metrodome for both of those moments. So was my wife. In 1987 we didn't know each other. In 1991 we had been married for one month.
  7. Even though this continues the off-topic discussion I'll say that I think the Twins' handling of Berrios was based on putting his needs first and the needs of the major league team second (or third or fourth...). My opinion is that this is the correct approach for a 21-year-old pitching prospect.
  8. Do I trust Glen Perkins? No doubt in my mind. I trust that he'll do his best. However, I'd also trust myself in that way, although I don't think I could throw a baseball faster than about 35 mph. I think what Nick probably meant when he wrote the title of this thread is "Do you think Glen Perkins has the ability to perform at a high enough level during the rest of the regular season to provide meaningful help to the Twins in achieving their goal of qualifying for the postseason?" Of course, that's a bit wordy. But to answer that question, I'm afraid I have to say I doubt it.
  9. Dickbert are right. One must win down, 12 must wins to go.
  10. Someone in the truck messed up by not alerting them to that.
  11. I bought some used paint. It came in the shape of a house. (Courtesy Steven Wright)
  12. OK, pitching staff, let's keep 'em down.
  13. I'm with you all the way on that. Otis Redding was god.
  14. Surprised Cleveland isn't playing the infield in for Mauer's at bat.
  15. If you listen to '60's music you have been listening to them. They backed a lot of the Memphis soul acts of that era.
  16. In the Blues Brothers version of "Soul Man" John Belushi says, "Play it Steve!" at the same juncture that Sam Moore says it in the Sam And Dave version and to the same Steve (Cropper, that is).
  17. Surprising and very interesting news. Surprising because I, like many, thought they'd not want to start his service time now. Interesting because this sends a message to Arcia and Hunter that they think he can do the job on the major league level. I think those two should plan their futures accordingly, Arcia to buckle down and work to become his best and Hunter to consider a new career path.
  18. I agree. The overabundance of off days lessens the advantage that a team with a deep starting rotation has. I think that's unfair. How about this: The first four games of every postseason series would be played on consecutive days, then one day off, then the remainder of the series (if necessary). If there have to be day games because of travel, then so be it. This pretty much requires teams to use four different starters. You'd have to pitch someone on short rest twice to get him three starts in a 7-game series. Edited to add: In the interest of uniformity and fairness all series should be scheduled on the same days, and there would be one day off between the last scheduled game of one series and the first game of the next one, including the day between the WC game and the LDS. A team that wins its series in fewer games receives the reward of being better able to reset their rotation compared to a team that requires more games to win.
  19. I think I agree about the schedule being too unbalanced, but I'm going to withhold further comment until after the season ends and I can make an analysis I have in mind. I'll probably start a thread about that in a month or two.
