  1. Tom Kelly understood how to manage a game as well or better than just about any manager ever. My perception is that his biggest shortcoming was his sometimes standoffish personality because it made it hard for him to relate to some players with the result being that he may not have gotten the most out of them. Molitor seems to have close to the understanding of the game as Kelly had but I'd guess he's much better at managing the clubhouse. If he stays in the dugout for a few more years I think his game management skills will do nothing but improve, and I agree that he seems much more willing to incorporate new approaches (defensive shifts, for example) than Kelly would have.
  2. And kudos to Molitor for sending Sano.
  3. Let's tie this game in one at-bat.
  4. Reminds me of a card a friend of mine once gave to a female of interest. The front said, "All most men think about is your legs." The inside said, "But I'm above that."
  5. If he doesn't answer maybe that's the answer.
  6. Lime jello with mini marshmallows.
  7. It would behoove you to do that.
  8. See, this is how a speedy runner on first base can throw off the pitcher. Or Mauer.
  9. Ah, I see. I didn't think they were dreads. Thought they were braids. Moot point now, obviously.
  10. I didn't watch the ASG. Did McCutchen have his long braids then? They aren't there now.
  11. The other day on the radio LEN III referred to him as "the skeletal remains of Joe Blanton". That said, he's essentially free and he might be an upgrade over what we have. I'd probably only want him for the rest of this year, though. What's his contract status?
  12. This is the 94th post on this thread, counting the first one. That makes about 90 posts more than this topic deserves.
  13. Improving the level of talent on the major league team can certainly be a bad thing if the wrong prospects are traded. Improving the level of talent in your organization is never a bad thing.
  14. OK, fine, whatever.
  15. So you give away a player or players for someone who's a bust for the remaining 2 years of his contract and you would be OK with that? I must be missing something.
  16. As has been said ad infinitum, Mauer has a no-trade clause in his contract. A no-trade clause means he can't be traded. So trading him is not an option. And proposing for him to be traded is not an option.
  17. To see how the 1987 Twins might have fared in today's system let's use the 3-division alignment that was put into place in 1994. In that scenario Detroit would have won the East, Milwaukee the Central and Oakland the West. Toronto and New York would have been the wild cards. The Twins qualifying for the postseason in 1987 was the result of an alignment fluke. They weren't a bad team and they took full advantage of this very lucky break, but that team would almost certainly not be a postseason team in 2015. So please, as has already been suggested, let's put 1987 to bed as a prototype for this year's team.
  18. This is how almost every major league team has managed its bullpen for a long time, probably for 30 years or more. The Royals of 2014 demonstrated that an extension of that strategy can succeed when you have the luxury of three relievers with closer stuff and mentality. Ahead in the 7th? Put in closer C, then closer B in the 8th and closer A in the 9th. Starters know they can give a little more if they only have to go 6. Use the other 3 relievers in your bully when you're behind or way ahead. It just illustrates further that the three most important things in baseball are pitching, pitching and pitching.
  19. Brian Duensing beginning June 13: 11 appearances, 13 2/3 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits (all singles), .075 opponents batting average, 2 walks and 9 strikeouts.
  20. Agree. Keep in mind that free agency is the anti-draft. The player chooses the team, not the other way around. While the size of the offer is certainly a factor I think every top-tier free agent looks first at the team's likelihood of strong contention in the upcoming 1-2 seasons. That's why the Twins never bothered trying to pursue Scherzer. He wouldn't have come here for double what the Nats offered him. And that's why I think things will be different for us during the next few off-seasons. Most baseball people see us as a team on the rise, possibly one of the top three teams in that sense, along with Houston and the Cubs. Couple that with the changes in revenue sharing compared with years past and I think we'll have a much better, more realistic, shot at free agents during the next five years than we've ever had.
  21. I addressed this in another thread, so my apologies to those who read that. The 1987 Twins had the fifth best record in a 14-team league. In today's system they'd have been either the second wild card team or not in the postseason at all. The 1987 Twins had to win 8 games against two opponents to be World Champions. In today's system they'd have to win 12 games against four opponents. The 1987 Twins needed only three starting pitchers to get through the postseason. In today's system four starters are almost always needed. The main thing that made that team better in the postseason than the regular season was two top-caliber starters in Viola and Blyleven. The rest of the starters were mediocre at best (which is the main reason they finished fifth in the league). The 1987 Twins started both playoff series at home. In today's system they would have been the road team in all four matchups. Not that that team was a bad one, but it's very unlikely they'd have gone all the way in any other season, and even more unlikely that they would do that under today's system.
