  1. Hey, that sounds like the Kate Smith GBA, at least the first part. Back in 1974 the Philadelphia Flyers would play that recording before some of their games and the team had a 36-3-1 record in those games going into game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals. (I looked it up.) When it reached time for the song to be played before the game the arena went dark except for a spotlight where the rubber mat had been rolled out and out she walked. Of course the fans went nuts and the Flyers won the game 1-0. One of the greatest PR moves made in the history of pro sports.
  2. At least it wasn't a cheap hit.
  3. It's the red jerseys. They wrung every bit of luck that they had out of them last night. Should have gone with the grays.
  4. So what would be worse for someone early in a career as a manager--accepting the Marlins job or declining the Marlins job?
  5. The ball boy down the right field line needs better training. The ball was in play and he just sat there. If a fan wouldn't have touched the ball it would have touched him. If I'm his supervisor he gets a stern talking-to after the game.
  6. Oh, cripes, I was afraid of this. The red jerseys are back again tonight. I suppose we'll have to endure those horrible things until they lose again.
  7. The AL Central doesn't have any terrible teams. It has one very good one and four that are about average or slightly below.
  8. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. The Twins just don't look like the Twins in red, and that includes spring training. I'm more in the traditionalist camp on unis. Home cream, road gray. Only.
  9. The division as a whole is 3 games over .500. The saddest division in baseball is the NL East at 45 games below .500. The second worst is the AL West at -2 so it's not even close.
  10. I'm in the camp advocating installing Sano as the full-time 3B and trading Plouffe for the best return Ryan can get. I'd hope for a good catcher or catching prospect but it might require a multi-player or multi-team deal to accomplish that.
  11. I sit corrected. Because Pelfrey came out before completing 5 innings, he could not have qualified for a win even if the Twins held the lead for the entire game. But when it comes to qualifying as the losing pitcher it doesn't matter when Pelfrey came out. The loss goes to the pitcher who gives up the run that gives the other team a lead which is held until the end of the game. Achter was on the hook for the loss.
  12. So is anyone else still even watching this game?
  13. So the good thing is that Dozier tied the game. The bad news is that Pelfrey is off the hook for the loss.
  14. Late to the party tonight. Just in time to see the lead wiped out. Crimeny.... I'm not sure if I want the Twins to win because if they do they'll probably want to keep wearing those gawdawful red jerseys out of superstition.
  15. What I'm reading on this thread is pretty much the same stuff I've been reading here for the last two months. Some people are very impatient and think that few of our prospects will succeed so they feel we have to do everything possible to improve the current team. Some people are sure that a high percentage of our prospects will have major league success in the next few years and that this year's team is far from realistic contention so they feel that any trade is a disaster. So who's right? Well, I am, of course!
  16. Concur. And that point has not arrived. Not even close.
  17. Because it does. Other GM's are not stupid. They will not trade unless they feel they are improving their organizations. Those prospects would have been the price for good current major leaguers.
  18. Yeah, the upside is that Shane Robinson could have hit a 3-run home run. Now, if you think it would be good strategy to plan on him doing that, more power to you. And the fact that there's not a consensus about whether to bunt or not shows that it can't be labeled as a good decision or a bad decision.
  19. No, it's not fear. It's an unemotional analysis. The manager evaluates all the different possible outcomes of all the different options and decides which option is the most likely to be the most advantageous. Lots of good managers would bunt in that situation. Lots of good ones wouldn't. But there's no fear.
  20. This is all true and should be considered in the decision. But also consider what can happen if the bunt is not called. A strikeout or short fly ball does not advance the runners. A long fly ball might advance the lead runner but hardly ever would advance both runners. A high percentage of ground balls fielded by an infielder would result in one of the baserunners being forced out, and quite possibly a double play. With the exception of both runners advancing on a long fly ball these outcomes all worsen the scoring expectation more than a sacrifice bunt. Simply telling the team to "get some more hits" doesn't make it happen. With Shane Robinson batting the bunt was the better choice, IMO. Of course there's also the option of bringing in Hunter to pinch hit but that is a completely different discussion.
  21. But given who was batting you must also factor in the likelihood of a hit vs the likelihood of a successful bunt. If you're not going to pinch hit the bunt was not a bad call.
