  1. I think the article hit it head on. It was Arcia vs. Hicks from the front office standpoint. Arcia's lefthanded power (seen in 2014, MIA last season) would play nicely opposite Sano's and Park's power from the right side. In this regard, the trade didn't bother me so much. It only hurt because I thought an outfield defense of Rosario-Buxton-Hicks for the majority of next year would do wonders for the contact-heavy staff. Reference the Royals the past two years to see how much an average staff could be propped up by great outfield defense.
  2. I assumed Meyer would begin 2016 in Rochester. The question is whether he is a starter or reliever.
  3. Has anyone come out and said whether Meyer would get a shot at starting in 2016? I would love to see him get another chance as a starter. He can always fall back into the bullpen if 2015 happens again.
  4. Well, they'd laugh now. They have John Ryan Murphy!
  5. Or doing something a GM with some creativity might do. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/20707-schwarber-for-berrios/ Plus this Hicks trade has bumped my thread waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down in the pecking order. DARN RYAN!!!
  6. 3 Things. 1) The "Twins Way" player is a real thing with Ryan. That's why I'm thinking there's no way Plouffe is traded. 2) It's hard to make big moves and still fill out your team when one player is soaking up a 1/4 of your payroll. And if said player's position is forcing an infielder into a crowded outfield, someone is going to get shipped off. The dominoes are beginning to fall. The Twins aren't done shipping young assets out.Three more years. Three more years. Who am I kidding with three more years? He'll get an extension. 3) This thread is fine. It's early, but nothing about Ryan's past suggests he's got a big deal up his sleeve.
  7. The Twins won 83 games and missed the WC by three games with a catcher who was bad defensively and terrible offensively. Suzuki put up 0.3 WAR over the entire season. Schwarber put up 1.8 in 69 games. That's 4.0 over 162 games (which would have led the Twins this past year). I'll take whatever defense he's got at catcher with his bat.
  8. I can't see Buxton starting opening day. A Plouffe makes WAAAAAY too much sense, so I'll assume it happens and Sano avoids the outfield. I would hate (or cruelly love) to see the team try to sell Shane Robinson as the opening day centerfielder after what he put up last year. Rosario now has to stay, right? This leaves them with ... LF - Rosario, CF - FA or trade acquisition from Plouffe deal, RF - Arcia. Yuck!!!
  9. I started the thread only really looking at Schwarber. But with Berrios, if we had a magic ball and knew what these guys become in the future, if he's a #1, than no way you do the deal. But if he tops out as a #2/3 and Schwarber's 2015 is his average (extended over a full season mind you), do you do it then?
  10. Obvious this is contingent on Schwarber playing catcher for the Twins. After watching the playoffs, it became obvious he's a bad fit for the NL. LF isn't his thing and the Cubs have Montero in as their catcher. Schwarbers defensive stats at C were average and he can still obviously improve (only 22 years old). His bat, though, plays anywhere. Left-handed power would be a great addition to the Twins. So, Cubs need pitching. Twins need a catcher. Would Berrios be too much to give up? Too little to make the trade happen? If not, who else? Who instead? IDK. Thought it'd make for a good discussion.
  11. Agreed. But if the 1B is only average, at best, and slugs under .400, the .340 OBP loses a little pizzazz.
  12. Yes, I never considered Mauer being moved. But I think the timetable for transitioning him to a part-time role should be accelerated if it means saving the team from trading away younger, more valuable assets or screwing with a cornerstone's position.
  13. I'm don't want to derail the conversation and turn this into a M___r discussion, but the guy is the elephant in the room no one (with the Twins) is talking about that is causing all the musical chair talks. So the Twins need to trade Plouffe (2.5 WAR) or Rosario (2.3 WAR), move Sano (2.0 WAR over 1/2 a season) to the outfield, bring in a 29-year-old rookie from Korea who's considered to be a "boom-or-bust" prospect who would force Kepler (Twins Minor Leaguer of the Year, Top 20-30) to an already crowded outfield, opening him up to a potential future trade, like with Hicks (1.5 WAR) once Buxton arrives because they can't (won't) do anything with a 0.3 WAR first baseman on the downside of his career? Trying Sano in the outfield over the offseason and spring is fine. But if the Twins decide to trade some of their young core as a result of the move or if Sano's impact is limited by the shift, then it becomes a problem. It's starting to seem like 2019 can't come soon enough.
  14. Not to sound needy, but could the TD crew put together a summary of the AFL games like they do for the minor league games during the season? It's a nice way to get a summary of how the Twins prospects do.
  15. The past is the past. What is really important is how the Twins handle Mauer now that he is not a star (which no one at this point can rightly argue against). He is a serviceable major league player, that's it. So, IMO, the first base job should be an open competition next spring. Take his name and contract away (oh, and the "who cares" fact he's a homegrown guy) and his stats this season warrant a competition. Mauer v. Vargas v. Kepler. I guess you could even throw Sano in their, though he'll be in the lineup no matter what (DH if not 1B). Whoever has the best spring starts opening day. If Mauer loses, than he's a backup and PH. I don't care if he's the most expensive PH in history. The best players get on the field through merit, not preferential treatment. If Mauer wins the job, than he plays because we will have deserved it.
  16. To me, the most annoying thing about the "Mauer problem" is where he hits in the lineup. Go around the league and tell me of another singles hitter who hits 3rd in the order. The only thing that is really valuable at this point is his OBP. Hit him 1st or 2nd. If you want speed at the top of the order, hit him 9th (GASP!!!!!, I know). It's a better spot for an OBP guy than say the 7-hole because he'd be on base for the 1-3 hitters as opposed to the 7-9 guys. He isn't going anywhere. If Kepler isn't going to play first, than Mauer should be in competition with Vargas. Joe wins that one. With the outfield getting crowded, though, I think a Mauer v. Kepler competition would be real fun to watch next season. Lastly, the mere fact Souhan's article has to lead with Mauer being a native guy shows how ridiculous the argument is. Who cares if he's from the area? Well, maybe the manager (another "native son") and obviously the GM.
  17. This thread has veered off the road. Look at what we're doing? We're arguing between Duffey & May, two young arms that have come up through the system and performed well with the Twins. We've lost the forest through the trees. How about May & Duffey both in the rotation and Pelfrey, Nolasco, Milone gone?
  18. Resiliency in 2015 + Minor moves this offseason = Fall back to Earth in 2016. I agree with the posters above. The Twins can't rely on this type of season happening again with the same roster. I'm thinking one big move to improve at catcher and the early promotions of Berrios and Kepler might give the team the boost it needs. Rochester will have talent in reserve in the form of power (Arcia, ABW II), relief (Meyer, Petersen, Burdi, Chargois), interesting pieces (D. Hicks, Harrison, Turner), and Jorge Polanco ready to supplement the MLB roster later in the season. I can also see Vargas and Santana starting in AAA as well depending if they or someone with the Twins haven't been moved. No matter what, it feels good to head into the offseason following a season like this, unexplainable as it is.
  19. NEVER! I couldn't be a baseball fan if I had to apologize to a GM for complaining about a move he made, right?
  20. The day A-Rod single-handedly destroyed the Twins in Minnesota. The guy can't retire soon enough for the Twins.
  21. Does anyone know where can I send my apology to Kevin Jepson for my trade deadline whine fest?
  22. Duffey has to be the Twins best development story over the past few years (maybe longer). His comeback after the Toronto start has to show how tough-minded he is. Here's to hoping he can give some advice to Jay next season. Pelfrey can't be back, right? Santana, Gibson, and Hughes are locks. Duffey makes four. That leaves the 5th starter spot open between Milone, Nolasco, Berrios (and maybe May). I like May as a starter, especially his ability to miss bats, but he's made a strong transition to the bullpen, something that's probably harder for a starter than most people initially think. I don't know why we don't let Nolasco and/or Milone try the move to the pen and give Berrios a rotation spot out of spring training. I would also love to see Alex Meyer turn things around and get a look with the Twins out of the bullpen where I think he will end up.
  23. Yeah, they tend to go into extra innings when you sacrifice with a man on second and no outs. Hey, then they walk a hot hitter (Rosario) to face a defensive sub for his first at-bat (Suzuki). Huh, I didn't know they could do that. Molitar bombed that game. I'm sitting there thinking, you know what would be awesome and maybe get Buxton's confidence going. If Molitar shows he has confidence in him and let's him swing away in the 9th. Imagine if he drives in the winning run in a big-time game with playoff potential. But hey, had to get Robinson over to third, right. I mean, it's not like he was a PR brought in for speed in case we needed him to score from second.
