  1. The best guess from the TD guys was it was a preemptive move thinking about innings limits for the season.
  2. Tough day at the office for Hu last night. It was his first bad outing of the season. He suffered his first loss of the season as he couldn't pitch out of the 4th. He gave up 6 runs (5 earned) on 9 hits (one on a HR) and 3 walks. H threw 97 pitches in 3-2/3 innings, so he was pretty ineffective. Here are his season totals (in Ft. Myers) as of today. 8 GS, 44.2 IP, 4-1 (W-L), 2.01 ERA, 37 H, 13 R (10 ER) 3 HR, 9 BB, 43 K, .220 AVG, 1.03 WHIP The season numbers are still great, but he has not pitched with the same dominance since his long break after the AAA start. Maybe his rhythms off or maybe teams are figuring him out. Or maybe he just had a bad night (and a not so great one). Here's to hoping it's a short funk.
  3. Not terrible, but is he more deserving than Milone? I'm also thinking down the road when Santana comes back from suspension. Then we'll have 7, not 6, starters for 5 spots. Nolasco, then, would have to be the one dropped, if it was based on performance alone, out of Hughes, Gibson, Pelfrey, and May, right? Any chances the Twins would explore a 6-man rotation like the Mets? Or would it be a move to the bullpen for someone?
  4. Don't disagree with anything on the list. Milone deserves the nod over Gonsalves. Even with major league experience, it took a lot of character to perform the way he did after being sent down. I agree, he is a MAJOR league pitcher and should remain there. Seth, can you explain if there is any contractual issues that would prevent the Twins from swapping Nolasco and Milone. Does Nolasco's big contract or the rules over the 25-man roster negate the Twins from keeping Nolasco in AAA? It seems like every other post I make is ripping Nolasco. He's been the worst Twins starter by far. For two years he pitch poorly, a sudden "injury" will pop up, he'll move to the DL, get a couple of rehab starts (only in Low-A ball of course, because that's just like the majors) and then jump right back into the rotation, bumping more deserving guys (Milone) off. I am confused. There's gotta be something I'm missing. I don't care about a big contract for a AAA pitcher. Let's just win!!!
  5. Who's Arcia? Right now I'd guess 2016 starters will be LF Rosario, CF Buxton, RF Hicks. The Arcia thing is in jest, but considering who's coming, the only thing he has working for him is that he's left-handed. The Twins lineup is going to be STACKED with righties (Dozier, Plouffe, Buxton, Sano -as DH, Pinto - #freejosmil, and maybe Walker III or Harrison). That's why Kepler's progress is great. Same with Polanco. Great post!
  6. Let me be the one to officially sopen the #FreeStephen campaign.
  7. I know you're right, but it's hard for me to admit it since we've had the same front office people now for a while whom have always been a bit behind the times. I guess 90+ losses for 4 straight seasons while ranking last in strikeouts can kind of knock some sense into the most stubborn of people (TR), but not all of them (anybody regretting losing Gardy & Andy?). You can probably trace the mentality back to the 2012 draft and the glutton of big arm relievers the Twins drafted that year.
  8. Who is then? I remember Andersen getting credited (them mocked gloriously for 4+ years) for the pitch to contact mantra. It starts at the top. Quotes like the one below get me excited and feeling like the organization has finally caught up the the rest of the league. "The Twins told us this year they wanted us to be strikeout pitchers," Gonsalves said.
  9. Hu returned to action Saturday after 10 days off following his AAA start. He picked up a no-decision after a 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R (1 ER), 4 K performance. He gave up his second home run of the season (& his career). It marked the first time Hu's team wound up losing a game he started. Here are his season stats, which remain impressive. 8 GS, 5-0 (W-L), 47.0 IP, 1.15 ERA, 30 H, 8 R (6 ER), 2 HR, 10 BB, 46 K, .180 AVG, 0.85 WHIP, 4.6 K/BB, 8.8 K/9, 1.91 BB/9
  10. Interesting idea. Besides tradition and shying away from the norm, I don't see much wrong with a 6-man rotation. That said, if the extra day of rest screws up the routines of the pitchers, then it may not be worth it. Also, I still don;t get the Nolasco guaranteed spot. I have posted several times wondering if Twins fans would be more mad about demoting a high salary guy becasue of bad performance or keep running him out there because of the big contract. For me, it'd be the latter. The Twins are winning. Forget about salaries, the best pitchers should pitch. Nolasco has easily been the worst starter this year. He's racked up a few wins while surrendering tons of hits and escaping numerous jams because of good luck and run support. Milone for Nolasco should happen NOW. When Santana comes back, then we'll talk again.
  11. It looks like Chih-Wei Hu will return to the mound on Saturday for FTM against the St. Lucie Mets. Hu hasn't pitched since his AAA debut last Tuesday May 19th.
  12. He's scheduled to pitch for Fort Myers on Saturday.
  13. Congrats to Batts on the promotion! I'll be excited to see his start tonight against a good Charlotte team.
  14. Interesting note. I'd have to go back to look at Betances stats in the minors. If Meyer can't work out his problems as a starter and turns into the kind of set up man Betances has been, there'll be some disappointment, but he could still be a key asset for the Twins.
  15. Big start by Batts last night. 12 Ks in 6 IP. It's pretty cool to see two tough lefties (Batts & Gonsalves) have such good results in Cedar Rapids. If Thorpe hadn't gone under knife, imagine a trio of killer lefties. Good news for the organization.
  16. Everyone involved has to be thrilled with Chih-Wei's performance this afternoon. In his AAA debut he gave up only 1 ER over 6 IP. Hu allowed just 2 hits, 4 BB and recorded 6 strikeouts. He lived up to his "competitor" status as he battled the walks to only give up the one run. I couldn't be happier for the kid. Another fun stat is that Hu's team has won every time he has taken the mound! Pretty cool and shows, I think, that his teammates really have his back and enjoy playing behind him. Here's his season stats. 7 GS, 5-0 (W-L), 41.0 IP, 1.50 ERA, 6 R (5 ER), 25 H, 10 BB, 1 HR, 42 K, 0.85 WHIP Ratio-wise, he has a 4.2 K/BB, 2.2 BB/9, 9.2 K/9. Considering preseason expectations and on-field performance so far, he's gotta be the brightest spot in the minors for the Twins. I think the national experts will begin taking notice. So, how long do you think till we see a rotation with Berrios & Hu? And where?
  17. Plus, he has now started seven games and his team has won every time out!
  18. All things considered, this was a great performance from Hu. 1 ER over 6 IP with 6 Ks. He lived up to his "competitor" status as he battled the 4 BB to only give up the one run. I couldn't be happier for the kid. Considering preseason expectations and on-field performance so far, he's gotta be the brightest spot in the minors for the Twins. I think the national experts will begin taking notice.
  19. Milone's AAA numbers are incredible!!! I thought he was just a soft-tossing lefty who struck almost no one out. I get there's a big difference between MLB and AAA hitters, but what Milone is doing, dominating like he is, can stand up anywhere. He handled the demotion like a stud and didn't go whining to the media like others have been known to do. As to what to do, I'm with you Seth in adopting a "win now" mentality. The Twins have a winning record for the first time in like a billion years. The roster needs refinement, not an overhaul. May is struggling. He should go down. That said, I hate the mentality of a player's contract determining playing time. Nolasco has been terrible since getting to Minnesota. On performance alone, he's the no-doubter for demotion. Would the fans really revolt because the 2nd-biggest FA signing in the team's history gets demoted because THE TEAM ACTUALLY WANTS TO WIN GAMES as opposed saving face on the contract? I sure hope not. The only reason I say May goes down is because he is young enough to actually benefit and learn from the trip. Apparently Nolasco can only pitch in Cedar Rapids and Pelfrey might just take off and never show up.
  20. Good read on Hu from the Miracle website. http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20150516&content_id=124768460&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_t509&sid=t509 It gives some good insight with regard to his early days in the organization, his training, and his repertoire of pitches.
  21. Well, Hu's getting a shot at AAA. http://www.startribune.com/rays-credit-twins-pitching-coach-allen-s-influence/303972941/ It's only a spot start, but I think it says a lot about what the organization thinks of him. I'm pumped for him. It'll be fun to see how he pitches and how his stuff holds up. Jumping two levels will be challenging. But all the interviews that mention his competitiveness and poise make me think he's equipped to handle the situation.
  22. It's going to be fun to see how he does. I don't think it speaks to the Twins changing their philosophy when it comes to promotions. I think the timing was right (Berrios is scheduled to pitch Monday or else he would have been called up) and they were short on options. Still, it shows the Twins have taken notice of Hu's performance so far. If was struggling there's no way he gets the call. Every interview someone mentions how he competes and how poised he is on the mound. Hopefully those traits come in handy Tuesday. Exciting!!!
  23. It's a fair question. But the dominance of the numbers he's put up (1.03 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 6/1 K/BB) thru 6 games show he might have the stuff, though not flashy, to succeed at higher levels. At a certain point, performance has to outweigh prospect rankings. A fun question may be who do you expect more from, Hu or Meyer? Stuff is nice, but if it doesn't show up during the games, what good is it. I'm not saying Meyer is done for. I just mean that when dominant stats start piling up, it may be time to ignore what various people think of a pitcher's "stuff" and start paying attention to HOW a guy pitches, attacks batters, and competes. These are three intangible areas where Hu has to rank high within the organization.
  24. Chih-Wei Hu continues to dominate in High-A ball. Yesterday afternoon, Hu pitched 6 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 6. He picked up a no decision, though, as the game was scoreless when he was relieved. The Miracle later got a walk off win. The Miracle have won every game he has started this year. Hu can't do better in the "giving the team and an opportunity to win" category. Here are Hu's season totals. 6 GS, 4-0 (W-L), 35.0 IP, 1.03 ERA, 23 H, 5 R (4 ER), 6 BB, 1 HR, 36 K, .185 AVG, 0.83 WHIP The numbers are great, especially his ERA, WHIP, and K/BB. Hu has started more games than runs he has allowed this season! Here's to hoping he continues the great performances and to waiting for a possible promotion.
