  1. Actually, it started with a question: ""Why do announcers use antiquated stats?" And a simple answer: "The speaker uses terms that the audience will understand". And a resulting disagreement. But change IS good; OPS, OBP and SLG are better than BA and RBI. ERA and OBA are better than W-L. You are right!..It's all good.
  2. Discussing a book with your wife is OK; Listening to other people discuss it....not so much. OPS is simple enough. I just hope that terms, with which the majority of baseball fans are familiar, don't disappear from baseball vernacular, and those fans don't disappear with them.
  3. I don't tune in to hear either. I can survive advanced metrics discussions, but most baseball fans are escaping from PBS, musicals, book clubs, charity events, flea markets or whatever their family members and friends prefer. The often have beer in their hands, mouths and bellies. Many can't spell OPS or their wives name by the 8th inning. I just don't want to chase away baseball fans, because the game becomes like a book review with their wife.
  4. Adam Brett Walker at 99 RBI (28 HR) after 6 innings in Monday game.
  5. Treat your audience like geniuses, and you will guarantee yourself a small audience of bored EX-baseball fans.
  6. Yes, but arrogant-smart and entitled-smart is not. If someone expects to have all announcers and all other fans (who are not really THAT into the game) to spend their time learning baseball metrics because THEY are interested in that subject.......I think that their sense of entitlement is askew.
  7. "Why do announcers use antiquated stats?" Because not everyone in the audience is a geek?
  8. The speaker uses terms that the audience will understand. How complex is that?
  9. I think that there was room for Cotts on the 40-man roster.
  10. "But it is nice to have 7-9 arms...right? Left?" If we are lucky, each pitcher will have two, so he can field come-backers.
  11. If that is an up-to-date photo of Berrios, he can't be ready for MLB! He looks 12-yrs-old!
  12. Friday night in Rochester. Waldo Arcia and Danny Santana just went combined Oh-for 12 with four strikeouts, preparing for their September call-up.
  13. I hope it is a player to be named later, because that player hasn't been born yet.
  14. Last season, only Hughes pitched over 200 innings. One season, a LONG time ago, Pascual, Ramos, Kaat and Kralick all pitched over 200 innings for the Twins.
  15. But remember the days when we would have a Rule 5 guy and a 3rd catcher?! Those were the days when starting pitchers pitched 200-300 innings, 8-9 innings per game. Now starters throw 100 pitches and relievers pitch one inning (or one batter). That is why ten-man pitching staffs and seven-man benches are long gone.
  16. Even GREAT pitchers throw some bad pitches, and even GREAT pitches sometimes get blasted by good hitters. It's baseball, where bad teams beat good teams about 50% of the time.
  17. Your Rule 6 guy should be a Minor League reliever that NEEDS to be protected to prevent loss in the Rule 5 draft. Otherwise the Twins would lose a guy every year and gain no one. (ie. no possible Pressley, Johan Santana, Josh Hamilton, Roberto Clemente, George Bell) Since JT Chargois was signed out of college in 2012, he is eligible to be lost in the Rule V draft, so he is a good choice. Other good choices (unless they are added to the 40-man-roster) would be Mason Melotakis, Taylor Rogers, Zack Jones, Luke Bard and Alex Muren.
  18. "'Twins gonna do what Twins gonna do' nullifies any debate about what Twins management does" There is no debate if EVERYONE (including the Twins) agrees that what they do is wrong, but they are going to do it regardless. You can't debate when everyone agrees. COMPLAINING however is NOT nullified. It's useless, but it's not nullified.
  19. The next step will likely be sending Hicks to AAA for rehab, and promoting Xavier Avery. Maybe they are just worried about a Buxton-Hicks collision!
  20. Nobody said that. I said it would be a mistake to trade away ANY chips that you may need later to win a pot WHEN YOU ACTUALLY HAVE THE CARDS TO WIN A POT!!!
  21. "it didn't cost Toronto a Berrios, Sano or Buxton type". ANY prospect given up in trade today is not going to help the Twins in the future!
  22. A third different thing is to save all your chips, so that when you have a real chance to win the pot, you can stay in hand until the end. If you trade away prospects that you may need later, so that you whiz-away your future chances, THEN YOU ARE JUST IMPATIENT AND STUPID!
  23. " I don't get Tonkin, he has the talent, he has velocity yet he cannot seem to put it together on the mound in the big leagues" Sometimes the Success-Confidence-Success cycle is hard to break through. Tonkin (like many others) may just doubt whether he has big league skills, and that doubt destroys confidence, which is CRUCIAL for success. He needs to succeed (by accident, if necessary) and that success may break the cycle. Or he needs to convince (fool?) himself with false self-confidence. That technique has worked for many athletes in many sports.
  24. "If he wasn't ready then, why is it OK to bring him up now?" Because he is ready now?
