  1. Anybody got a running list of who we can expect to show up at Ft Meyers?
  2. I wonder if Ryan has been looking for someone willing to take a minor league deal w/invite to compete in Spring Training, someone that's actually more on the same level as Plouffe, for 3b.
  3. The real question isn't wether or not it would benefit the Twins to trade Mauer, but why in the hell would he wave his no-trade? The Twins look to have some fantastic guys coming up in 2014-2015, and he's already under contract for those years. He's making PLENTY of money. He has very strong, deep roots in Minnesota and family is exceedingly important to him (hell, his mom answers his fan mail for him). Plus, he just got married to a girl who is also from Minnesota. Odds are exceedingly low that the Red Sox will even have a shot at the division title, much less win a championship. They totally imploded last year, and the Orioles and Blue Jays look like they will be serious competitors next year. There is ZERO benefit to moving to Boston for him.
  4. I think Wilson would be a nice addition, but not as a guaranteed closer. I'd let Perkins start off as the closer, with Wilson and Burton being our late inning guys, with Wilson being ready to step up if Perk struggles. Really though, whoever closes, those three guys would make a helluva back end to the rotation, and make it A LOT easier for us to stick with a 12-man pitching staff. Plus, any of those three becomes a valuable trading chip at the deadline (assuming they perform up to form), wether it's to stock up for 2014 or add another solid bat to push into the playoffs. From a PR standpoint, between him and Perdomo we could have some fantastic beard-related promos and giveaways
  5. I know we still need a pitcher or three, but I'm nervous about our IF. Between Morneau and Parmelee we've got 1b covered, and I'm willing to accept Plouffe as a regular at 3b, but for the middle we've got Carroll, Dozier, Escobar, Florimon and Santana on the 40 man. Carroll is the most proven guy, but he's getting old and isn't exactly a big threat offensively. The other 4 guys have played in 190 MLB games COMBINED. But what can we do to get a little insurance? Skip is going to the Dodgers, the Yankees signed Youk, Jack is headed to the Reds, Scutaro is with the Giants, Maicer Izturis went to Toronto. Is there anyone left on the FA market or trading block that'd be worth throwing a flyer at? Is going forward with Grampa Jamey and the Kids our best bet?
  6. I would bet that the only pitchers that would given an opening day start over Diamond are Grienke or Dickey. The only consistent starter in 2012 will be given the ball
  7. I would hope in your dream lineup we'd get some better middle infielders
  8. I was just coming to post something like this...anyways, here's my take: 1. Mastro CF 2. Escobar SS 3. Mauer C (I know, they'll always bat Joe #3, but he should be #2) 4. Willingham LF 5. Morneau 1B 6. Doumit DH 7. Plouffe 3B 8. Parmalee RF 9. Carroll 2B SP Diamond Bench - Butera, Benson, Dozier, Florimon If they sign Hannahan or Skip, Dozier starts the season in AAA (with Skip likely getting a start over Carroll at 2B)
  9. Do we still have Clete Thomas under contract?
  10. He's a Boras client. Never gonna happen
  11. Well damn. I'm as big a Revere booster as anybody, but I guess I have to admit this is a good trade for the Twins. I'll miss Ben a lot, he was exciting to watch and an all around good guy. Hopefully he thrives in Philly and we see him back here in 2014 for the Allstar game. This does definitely make Spring Training a lot more interesting. Willingham, Mauer, Doumit and Mourneau are the only guys that are going to show up in Florida knowing for sure what there role will be.
  12. Never hear of him before, but now I totally want him over here. Get someone to teach him a knuckleball too and he'll be unstoppable
  13. I like hannahan, but if we only sign one infielder, I'd rather get someone who can also play SS. Escobar and Florimon seem to be our best two options there and that scares the hell out of me. A really solid SS would help cover for a middling 3b too
  14. Remember, Revere hasn't actually stayed with the Twins for an entire 162 game season yet. He has areas to improve on for sure, but he was 3rd in SB, 10th in Triples, 6th in singles in the AL. I fully expect that his walk rate will improve, and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him in contention for a Gold Glove and leading the league in SB next season. If we extend him now, we take the chance that he won't pan out. BUT, we won't be taking that big a risk. With his limited big league experience, they should be able to extend him for pretty cheap, cheaper than what it will cost next off-season
  15. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe at this point, the Twins haven't signed a single new Major League contract. I suspect it's all hinging on Grienke. Wether or not we are actually seriously pursuing him, he's holding up everything. If by some miracle we sign him, it will clearly set out how much money we'll have left to spend. If it's with someone else, it well set the mark for other top FA pitchers, and will help their agents determine what to ask for. Terry Ryan's inaction up to this point on the major league level I think indicates how seriously he views revamping the pitching. Once the top pitchers start setting their price, we'll see him go after a few, and I think only AFTER we've signed a couple starters will they start seriously looking to see how much money they have left to invest in our other question marks (SS, 2B, 3B, maybe RF). That probably means we won't see much of an upgrade to our IF, but hopefully will see a SP signing better than a Jason Marquis. So in essence, I'm betting we start seeing a flurry of Twins activity as soon as Grienke signs. Thoughts?
  16. Also, are all OF plays factored in when calculating "runs saved"? I'm just wondering if having quality cut-off guys who get back far enough and make quick turnaround relays factor in to the picture.
  17. My gut feeling is that Revere will end up saving more runs than Span did last year. His increased range will also make it easier for Willingham and whomever is in RF. At this point, I don't think Parmelee is going to play every single day. More than likely, I see a platoon with Mastroianni or Plouffe. (Mostly dependent on wether or not they pick up a 3B in the off-season) With Plouf/Parm, you'll likely see stats similar to Willingham. With Maestro, it'll balance out closer to average. As it stands right now, their OF has taken a step back in defense, but not as huge as it could be. As long as we've got an excellent CF, and guys who at least look like they belong in the OF, I'm ok with it. I'm much more concerned about our incredibly unsettled IF. Quality pitchers and a decent IF will significantly limit the exposure of our OF defense.
  18. I don't know that I want Lew here (he certainly isn't better than Revere or Willingham, and we have plenty of kids fighting for time at RF or the 4th OF spot), but I do want to see him succeed and become an important piece for the Orioles. It just makes for a good story. I'll honestly be surprised though, if Casilla and Valencia make much an impact, or even get much playing time. They both had their shots to be everday players and couldn't keep it together.
  19. It's worth tossing a line out. Chances of getting him are slim, but we'll never know if we don't ask. Becoming a FA by non-tender doesn't typically encourage other teams to pay top dollar for ya
  20. Justin Morneau is also listed at 6'4, 220lbs (baseballreference.com) In the pics you've seen, are they comparable?
  21. Rubbish. He competed in a division where you win 95 games and cross your fingers for a wildcard berth, and won his second World Series at age 33. I don't care how good he is. It's still the Cubs. You pretty much have to be a wizard to make that team decent
  22. Well...if he performs well with the Cubs this will be disappointing. If he sucks, it will be a relief. I imagine it was a difficult decision for the Twins. He's coming off a serious injury, and while he has mostly been very good, it seems like he's always been prone to giving up the long ball. You want to show loyalty to a guy that's worked really hard for us, and given us some really good performances, but going into a year where upgrading our starting pitching is an absolute #1 fans-will-revolt-if-we-don't priority, investing much money into a guy coming off TJ surgery is pretty risky, especially when you consider that he hasn't actually started a MLB game since August 8 2011.
  23. The Owner's meeting is this week. Any huge deals are probably going to need owner approval at least, so I don't expect to see any key figures sign until after those meetings. And whoever mentioned it earlier is probably right, no decent starting pitcher is going to sign before Grienke does. They want to see what he gets, and judge their salaries against that. Another key deadline is Dec 2nd, the last day to offer contracts. While it won't really matter to "star" players, a lot of the mid level free agents will probably benefit from holding out until after then, when it becomes a little clearer exactly which teams have which holes.
  24. Also, on what do you base the claim that he is wild? His SO/BB ratio seems pretty darn good for last year, better than a lot of the pitchers we trotted out. Not saying we're going to hand him a slot in the pen right away, but worth a look at.
  25. He's clearly doing something well if he was the International League Relief Pitcher of the Year. I doubt his invitation to ST will come at the expense of anyone else's invite. More than likely his agent insisted that an invite to ST was included as a condition of signing. I highly doubt the Twins are going to be stingy about inviting people to ST. We'll probably see a ridiculous number of arms there for the first couple weeks at least.
