  1. I have a good friend that came to the United States as a young boy. In 7th grade his English was poor, but he managed through it. He taught me how to say certain sound forms that English doesn't have, and it was enlightening. When I talk to young second or third generation Vietnamese American students, I notice that their names have been Americanized one way or another. Nguyen is either "Win" or "Newyen". When I use the Vietnamese pronounciation, I am corrected. I find that a bit ironic, but it is now what it is. Thank you for the update. The world is getting flatter every day.
  2. Isn't the "By..." sound a character that is not in English? Is that like "b-yung" but very quickly stated? Is it like the "Ng..." sound in Vietnamese?
  3. I made a similar post a couple weeks ago. I heard Be-Young Park. Is that what you heard?
  4. I wonder how Korean players feel when the MLB team has to fork out $5 - $12 million to their old team. Shouldn't the player be seeing most of that money?
  5. Does that mean San Diego would bat their eighth worst hitter in the second slot just to keep the third and fourth guy in place? SD is San Diego right - not South Dakota or Shaggy Dog's Bar?
  6. Knowing what to do is not always the same as having the skill to do it. from wiki ...
  7. A study came out a decade ago showing that the power of the home run was undervalued. The study showed that the power hitters should get more at bats and be closer to the top of the order. This goes against the Earl Weaver three run homer mantra, but the statistics were convincing. In any case, the Twins should have learned from David Ortiz that trying to make power hitters into third strike ball slappers actually reduced their production. In Boston, Ron Jackson told Ortiz to swing away because three home run rips are better than two in the long run for that type of hitter. Big Papi increased home runs, batting average, and walks by being the hitter he was rather than what the Twins wanted him to be.
  8. As long as the Twins protect Sean Gilmartin, I am fine with it. WHAT? Nevermind ...
  9. Has Park been signed? If he is signed, does he start in AAA?
  10. What has Buxton done at the major league level to show he can hit? Hicks was working on it and could hit from one side. With our luck, the Yankees will insist Hicks only hits from the right side and he improves to a .290 overall hitter with an .800 OPS.
  11. I don't see it that way. I want players the Twins trade for to do well and players they trade away to bust rather than the other way around. I do check in on the ex-Twins players from time to time, but that is likely because I believe they will do better than what we got for them, and I want to have evidence that the GM, manager, and hitting coach couldn't figure it out. In the long run, I'd rather have a front office that knows how to deal than hold a special place for players that did not contribute for the Twins. For veteran players that leave via free-agency or forced a trade, there is little love lost. Carew doesn't count because the Twins wanted him to play for peanuts.
  12. Who will I upset here if I say those are already sunk costs?
  13. It was easier with Mount Crushmore because three of the four players came up in the Twins system. Trying to build the base from without is more difficult. Too bad the Twins didn't go after Nelson Cruz last season.
  14. Other than Rod, Burt, and Papi, I have never wanted an ex-Twin to do well. I suspect that Washington didn't want Arnold to do well for the British either. Ex-Twins are now the enemy.
  15. Would I hire Gardenhire? No, ... he doesn't know how to set up a lineup card.
  16. How about Joe Mauer working out with a speed/power/conditioning coach in the offseason instead of playing golf. The Mickey Mantle era is long over.
  17. So how many ankles will get turned by base clipping with spikes if replay checks base contact?
  18. Read: he doesn't want part time role money. The Twins overpaid last season, and Hunter believes another $10.5 million pay day is around the corner.
  19. The term "great" is reserved for World Series teams. 83 game winners who finish 12 games back in their division and can't even grab one of two wild card spots need not apply.
  20. Why would I be trading these players if they are kicking butt and taking names? So far, Buxton and Kepler have not lit a fire in the major leagues, and gambling that they both will is a fool's bet. I wanted the Twins to pick up one outfielder last off-season, and that was Nelson Cruz. It would have required a four year deal, and I would have expected him ro be around for most of them seasons. I like four year deals; I dislike eight year deals, so the Cruz deal with Seattle was one I could live with. It was medium risk for high reward potential. When Buxton or Kepler bat .300+ with 44 dingers, then we could complain how that deal was blocking them.
  21. Prospects are just prospects until they make it big. If Buxton or Kepler are what you say they will be, then any good signing can be traded for value. It certainly makes sense to sign a bird in the hand than to constantly wait for the bird in the bush that may never come.
  22. Well, ... no, but he does provide a bumpy ride.
  23. I am on record stating that I did not want Hunter to be signed for the 2015 season at that salary. Hunter does have value for a team that needs some pop, but other players could have provide that value too. Hunter was overpriced and underperformed. The Twins are not going to win the race with retreads. They need to purchase some new performance tires that have a lot more rubber for grip, stability, and bad weather traction.
  24. Coming out of Spring Training, I thought the Twins could almost reach .500. I was hoping Molitor would make the difference. Coming out of the first week of play, I thought the team would be lucky to win 75 games. Coming out of May, I thought the Twins could get 85 wins but would regress toward the mean. Coming out of the All Star break, I thought the Twins could scrap for 90 if they could pick up some pitching and either a lead-off or power bat. Then they tanked. It was pretty much hoping for a .500 result the rest of the way. In the end, the Twins exceded my opening day expectations by a half dozen games. I guess that is not bad, but the team had obvious problems that were not addressed in the offseason, so I was never really excited about this season.
  25. Having a five game losing streak in late September does not bode well for a team in the hunt to play in late October.
