  1. I always wondered if his first freak injury he got in early April 2004, while tracking down the foul ball behind home plate, left him susceptible to the back injuries and such. Like a domino effect compounded by playing catcher.
  2. I'm sure there's a lot of things that went in to that decision. Fangraphs has an amazing following now. He runs the scouting crew for them, etc. Some have mentioned they wouldn't even want to work for a team.
  3. absolutely, and so do many teams. In fact, the guy who does their prospect rankings has worked in at least one major league front office. In Kiley mini-bio" 'Staff writer of FanGraphs. Joined in August, 2014. McDaniel serves as the lead prospect analyst and head of the FanGraphs scout team. He previously worked for the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles and wrote for Scout.com and ESPN's Draft Blog.'
  4. Wainwright did have TJ surgery which sometimes means another is likely gonna happen about X amount of innings, or so I've heard. So there might be some concern there.
  5. I meant 2005. I'm guessing everyone knew that, though
  6. LaRoche had a combined WAR of 2.1 over the last two seasons and over the last three he's averaged 1.8 WAR a season.
  7. problem is, Amaro wants a bunch of prospects AND doesn't want to eat any of Hamel's salary.
  8. which affected his preparation for the season, like Morneau and his laundry list of ailments he had during the offseason prior to 2015 that didn't allow him to prepare properly.
  9. If Mauer does what he did in 2012 and 2013, I'll take that every single season and feel more than happy with it. I don't think that says I am limiting expectations, not do I want to say, 'since he's a borderline HOFer, lets push expectations for him to be a player he isn't because what I have some idea in my mind of what an HOFer should do'. In 2012 and 2013, he had a wRC+ over 135. That's extremely good. Take it every year, and hopefully healthy while doing so.
  10. Yes, but they also said that along with that, the team has few that are projected high, so overall, it's still not going to make much difference. It's one of the reasons Fangraphs has them projected last and why every single person at Fangraphs that I've seen/heard talk about their chances predict yet another poor season. Zips projects us to finish in the bottom 5 in MLB for wins, based on player projections.
  11. 'He also shouldn't bat 1-4 in this team's lineup.' Who had the best OBP on this team last year and who normally will? It's Mauer. So he should absolutely be in the top four of the lineup. You want the guys who get on base the most at the plate as much as possible. I don't think one off year (in which he STILL lead in OBP) changes that. The guy is normally around wRC+ 130 (143 in 2013, 138 in 2012), that kind of run creator should absolutely be high up in the lineup.
  12. I honestly can't see how this team can reach .500. The pitching staff isn't that good, the defense is horrible, and there are quite a few players that are due to regress to the negative offensively. I wish I could legitimately see how we'd get to .500 when looking at our team and comparing it to the others in the division, but I can't.
  13. Well, first, it's not that easy to just stop striking out. A lot more to it than just figuring that if I stop striking out so much, my BA would be better. On top of that, those non-Ks could still end up being outs and they'd still have his BA lower. For example: Cuddyer won the batting title the year before, playing half his games in the same ballpark as Morneau did last year (the best hitter's park in the game) with a BA that was 12 points higher than Morneau's was last year and yet he struck out 40 more times than Morneau did last year. Not sure about the direct correlation.
  14. I think we should guess when Hunter goes after Mauer in the dugout. I'm gonna say mid-August
  15. I don't see them being much of a contender, not really. I'm liking the Indians more and more, a lot having to do with the rotation. Like Jeff Sullivan at Fangraphs said yesterday in his chat when asked what AL team had the best rotation and he said the Indians. I agree with him.
  16. I think all the people saying he needs to be a player he isn't has finally affected his approach. He's now trying to force the issue as far as run producing and pulling the ball. As our lineup got weaker in 2013 and then young kids joined in 2014, he probably felt more pressure. Probably didn't help the whole old school thinkers writing about how he needed to hit like a 1B (and a 23M man) as if one can just change because they change positions and get a new contract. Pitchers pitch him outside all the time. We saw a lot of him trying to pull outside pitches more than he tried to most of his career and that's where the Ks and the grounders to 2B comes from, IMO. As far as working behind the count and how he needs to swing more often at first pitch, he's done that most of his career and it didn't hurt him a bit. Not sure it all of a sudden is the issue.
  17. yeah, but then we need to not only look at PAs with RISP but how many runners were in scoring position. Were there two lots of times? I think there are a lot of assumptions when you say because a player had this many RBI with his old team he would have had that many with his new team. He didn't hit well, overall, with RISP, his RBI total (like everyone else) is a function of Opps and we have no idea how Opps would have changed if he had been in the lineup. So I guess we'll see how it works out this year.
  18. Enjoyable read! Would have liked to see a question or two concerning the horrible defense and how it affects the pitching. Defense seems to have been glossed over. 'When Torii came back for Twins Fest, our fans who came to Twins Fest were as excited about him being here as anybody we could have signed. That's not why we did it - it wasn't a PR move or anything else.' Hmmm. 'But also, he would have led our team in RBI last year. 17 home runs would have been one of our leaders.' Would he have led our team in RBI if he had played for us, though? He had a .694 OPS with RISP. Would he have had as many runners in scoring position if he had been with us?
  19. I like how Kiley has Berrios #3. And then I get concerned about Gordon being as high as #4. Also, see this organizational overview by Dave Cameron on the same story. 'The Twins are firmly in rebuilding mode, but in that awkward stage when their young talent hasn’t developed yet, so they find themselves filling roster spots with veterans who have no real future with the organization. These kinds of seasons give the team chances to find unexpected core pieces like Brian Dozier, but it also forces the team’s fan base to sit through way too much of Kevin Correia and Mike Pelfrey. They aren’t particularly close to contending, so expect a few more years of sifting until they finally try and put a contender on the field again.' (yes, he knows Correia is gone too, he was just talking about what we've had ti sit through as the rebuilding has been going on.)
  20. I think people are WAY overstating the effect he's going to have, if he has any at all. There is no way to make this signing look like a smart signing.
  21. Since his quality defense has gone the way of the dodo bird, who is gonna work with him on HIS defensive deficiencies to show him what HE is doing wrong? I think he should concentrate on his own game, but that wouldn't be a good story, since his defense is fine according to him and Ryan.
  22. I'm not sure I agree that is what it means and I also think it doesn't help anything. It also concerns me it's usually the best player on the team he's going after and that he makes sure he does it in the dugout.
