  1. Mike, I wouldn't trade him during this season, but I'd look to have a young alternative for next year (whether it's an internal option or through trade).and trade Perkins, and his very friendly contract, so the new closer can go through his rough patch in 2016 and, hopefully, he or someone else is ready for 2017 when we will supposedly be ready to be serious contenders. Hopefully we get someone or a couple quality prospects for him that also help around that time or 2018. Then again, I suggested trading Perkins a couple offseasons ago and then last offseason too, but got slammed in the offseason before 2014 down because 2014 was supposed to be the year we were really contenders, then this last offseson too because 2015 or 2016 was when we'd be real contenders. Never the right time, always just around the corner.
  2. maybe it's time to accept that Meyer is a reliever and start grooming him, or the ton of relievers we've drafted the last couple years, to take the closer mantle. Notice lately that when people are talking about or near future rotation Meyer is absent from practically every list.
  3. I came to this thread to say exactly the same .
  4. Good stuff Brock!
  5. perhaps, but Perkins has a track record of being a stud closer. Gibson's track record?
  6. Depends on what kind of pitcher you thought he was to begin with. But I was assured many times that all we need to take into account is what he's shown since the calendar turned May and that it proved he had become a serious quality pitcher. Not sure if we are supposed to consider the last two starts :-)
  7. why not? He's agreeing with me. He just said it's usually okay with pitch id (notice the post he responded was about pitch classification). You said it's good for some things but basically very inconsistent for pitch identification and their pitch identification leaves something to be desired. Your statement doesn't jive with his usually okay assessment of pitch ID. And, also, we still have to wonder what flaws the system he is sourcing has itself, just like we do with yours. Should we believe they systems you too look at are perfect so as to be sure every time those say pitchfx is wrong it's for sure wrong instead of it being your system that's wrong? In any event, I don't assume pitchfx is perfect. I never said it was, but for the conversations we were having, it was more than fine to use.
  8. Hughes has been in the league a long time and in 4 or the last five seasons (this one is included) he's had a FIP of 4.50 or higher. If he was going to be a #2, he'd be one. Last season was a huge outlier.
  9. My post had nothing to do with what the Twins should and/or shouldn't do. I was just giving kudos to KC. If we want to make it about the Twins though, I can't remember them ever making even close to this kind of move at the deadline in any year where they won the division either. At least since Ryan took over the first time.
  10. When I first read this, I thought you were calling him Ballpark Finnegan I thought, nice nickname!
  11. They know they need an ace type in the playoffs and they went and got one. Going for it sometimes hurt. Worrying all the time about making a trade because you might end up losing the trade in the end is a horrible way to run a team. KC played for and worried about the future for way too long. They are in the window to worry about now.
  12. I like Finnegan a lot, has a bright future in my opinion, but isn't Berrios quite a bit higher on the prospect food chain than #55? BA had him around 20 spots higher going into this year. Sporting News has him at #17 as of June and a few people that were in front of him on that list have since graduated.
  13. I think if you read the post Chief replied to, and then Chief's response, the point he was making is that does have an impact on the Twins chances this year. And that isn't a conjured up idea, it's reality.
  14. I thought they added Santana in the offseason. Ah, TR's master plan! Sign a guy, have him get suspended, then return at the break to be his 'midseason acquisition' for our push, but be ineligible for the playoffs). It's just like getting a Cueto :-) Anyway, nice move KC. I really liked it when they traded for Shields and Davis, and I like this too.
  15. I think TR was going to be ultra-conservative at the trade deadline like he has always been when it comes to providing serious talent for playoff run. I doubt the fact that KC got Cueto altered anything.
  16. Kepler played last night and every game, I believe, since the 16th. Before that, his last game was the 8th of July http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=kepler001max&type=bgl&year=2015 Unless the Twins have internal info unavailable to us that says he didn't :-)
  17. ZiPS is a projection of what he might have done if he had been in the majors. Not at all projecting his minor league production
  18. Well, it would be hard to debate hypothetical/theoretical info unable to us that most certainly tells us a completely different story than the info available to us. I guess we could just assume all the info available to them and not us tells the right story, that they follow the info, and that they always make the right decisions. Not sure how blindly trusting the FO will work on a site like this that seems to flourish in debates, but it would be less interesting. :-) While we are at it, we can do the same with the decisions made by the President and the rest of our government. They have way more info than is available to us as well.:-)
  19. Steamer and Depth charts projected every player on the 40 man (and maybe more) as to what they would do if they played in the majors this season. Notice the games played stat for Kepler on depth charts and steamer? Each say ONE game. You don't think they projected him to play one game in the minors, do you? They didn't project his minor league numbers. Not sure where you found his ZiPS projection, but Dan S (the creator of ZiPS) said that his projections are for what player is projected to do if he made the majors. When you see one game on a projection, tells you he thought there was zero chance he'd make the majors, but it also says he isn't projecting minor league numbers.
  20. Dozier spent 3 seasons in the minors before he was promoted. Brought to the majors to play a position he could't play, like Plouffe. The system missed the mark on both of them. But he bounced back quickly when moved to 2B and that was that. Twins had to decide between former 1st round pick Plouffe and Luke Hughes when both were out of options.
  21. yeah, and he lacks fundamentals at the position as well. Like the play with he and Dozier a few games ago. His ball all the way and anyone who has played the position for any decent time knows that. He's very much like Casilla in that way. Loads of physical talent, not able to put it together to play shortstop. Escobar may not be flashy or have the same range necessarily, but he seems to have the fundamentals down.
  22. Danny Santana's defense is excellent? Are you watching the same player the rest of us are? His DRS is -14. The next worse shortstop sits at -8. He's 23rd out of 26th in UZR, but it's a counting stat and the players below him all have over 240 more innings played there. So far, he's horrendous on D, likely the worst starting shortstop in the game on defense, and not better than Escobar on D
  23. Assuming, of course, you and/or whatever you are using to double check pitch fx is 100% accurate where you can say, for certain, their pitch identification is very much lacking. Maybe the truth is somewhere in between. Maybe most pitches are obviously one type or another and there's only a minimal amount that are misidentified making the huge difference in pitch selection still valid even if a few pitches are slightly misidentified. In any event, we can only use info available to us to discuss (in this case as well as advanced stats). When looking at the same system's info (their imperfect, but consistently imperfect, year to year data) from 2013, 2014, and 2015, there has been a large change in his pitch selection. Maybe it's not quite as large due to slight imperfections in pitch fx data or maybe it's slightly larger due to slight imperfections in pitch fx data. His regular curve is pretty much gone where it was a big pitch for him in 2013. His cutter become a very good and often used pitch for him in 2014 and still is in 2015 and his two seamer is a bad pitch he's decided to use even more. His fastball has also lost velocity and it's costing him
  24. 'PITCHf/x is a pitch tracking system, created by Sportvision, and is installed in every MLB stadium since around 2006. This system tracks the velocity, movement, release point, spin, and pitch location for every pitch thrown in baseball, allowing pitches and pitchers to be analyzed and compared at a detailed level. Two mounted cameras in each stadium are used to track each pitch and establish the each aforementioned aspect.' Probably better than us fans or the TV guys trying to guess what was thrown. Since release point is seen, the grip is too. And it's not like it's new, they've had 10 seasons to tinker with it to make it the best they can. Actually, longer than 10 years since they tinkered with it before being used at the major league level. :-)
  25. yeah, he needs to greatly reduce his two seamer usage and use the cutter more too. His cutter is his most effective pitch both last year and this year.
