  1. Gibson as #5 and Deduno in the pen sounds like the right approach. Worley and Diamond have had an entire year and spring to get their acts together and have failed to solidify their places. Its time to move on or if they clear waivers stick them in Rochester.
  2. Hopefully Diamond follows quickly behind Worley. Both are AAA pitchers and if they clear waivers would be assets to call up in a pinch if needed. If they are claimed its good to know they are basically replacement level or below pieces that are easily replaced. Its time for this team to take a step forward. That means stop messing around with zero upside soft tossers like Diamond and start looking at actual prospects like Gibson. This is shaping up to be the 4th 90+ loss season in a row. That is a disgrace for a team that will be in year 5 of a new ballpark. Its time this front office and fan base stop worrying about the roster filler and focus on who is going to play shortstop, lead off, drive in runs, play catcher, and other GLARING holes in the lineup. A great Scott Diamond or the regular Scott Diamond is a difference between being 65-97 and 67-95. It just isn't worth eating up more spring training innings anymore. You know what you have, a guy that will win roughly a quarter of his starts and have an ERA in the mid-5s. Gibson may not be the answer but its time to see whether he can hold down the job.
  3. I agree with Jim above. The time to improve the offense was months ago. The front office neglected it again this year and will be paying the price all year. Bartlett and Kubel were garbage signings. Neither belongs in the big leagues at this point. Suzuki isn't horrible but doesn't add any upside either. I would say its much more likely we've seen the best days from Plouffe, Willingham, and Parmalee than they are actually going to improve. Its basically an offense that is built to fail. That is 100% on the front office. They chose to go with hope over actually building a roster.
  4. Exactly!!! The Cardinals are FAR SUPERIOR to the Twins on all fronts. The bottom line is the Cards understand roster management and are in it to win a championship. The Twins don't do anything better than other teams except trying to maximize the amount of money that is left in the Pohlad's bank account. I trust St Louis's assessment of Diaz's talent. Most of what I hear from the Twins seems like excuses rather than valid assessment of talent. Every player has flaws, especially when they are young. If your front office philosophy is only signing flawless prospects and minimizing spending you are going to have to get very lucky to be successful.
  5. The sooner the Twins stop bothering with zero upside roster fill like Bartlett, Kubel, Diamond, Fryer, and Worley and replace them with guys like Hicks, Gibson, Arcia, Pinto, and Santana, the sooner I believe they are commited to this rebuild. Losing another 90+ games with Kubel and crew makes ZERO sense. They have neglected the major league roster to save money three years in a row, its time to move this thing forward NOW.
  6. Its not just you. Bartlett has no business playing outfield on a major league roster. The only reason its being considered is this front office's incompetence in putting ACTUAL outfield options on the roster with a glut of DH's and crappy hitting catchers. If Bartlett wasn't a former Twin this move would make this team a laughingstock. But because we must have Minnesota ties to everything, it gets a pass. Just sign Jacques Jones and be done with it. He's a more viable option.
  7. Arcia - 18 Willingham - 14 Dozier - 12 Florimon - 9 Plouffe - 9 Mauer - 7 Twins - Fewest HRs in the majors by 12-15
  8. That looks like a 70 win roster to me. Pitching slightly better, horrendous lineup, bottom 10 in the league in defense. Yuck.
  9. Honestly if all four of these guys are on the Twins roster you are guaranteed a 90 loss season anyway. Deduno is honestly the only one I'd consider keeping at this point. Parmalee is what he is. He's never going to develop into a guy that isn't going to be exposed the longer he's in the lineup. When he's streaky good he's fine but more often than not he's a horrible defender with a so-so bat. Diamond could have some value but he just doesn't have the stuff to be anything more than a #5 guy over the long haul. I'd much prefer to give Gibson or Deduno this spot anyway. I think Worley is dead to this front office. They got ZERO from him at the major league level and he was just as bad in the minors. Its starting to look like he was damaged goods when we got him. I doubt he's in the league in 2 years. He's definitely not an upgrade over anyone we have. I'd be stunned if he's not one of the first of the guys with a serious chance of making the roster cut this spring. Deduno should be in the rotation. If for whatever reason Gibson beats him out, I'd still put him in the pen. There is no reason a team as bad as the Twins should be cutting a guy with this much talent. He'd would by far be the first of this batch claimed if released.
  10. In the case of Brooks Raley, yes you can have enough left handed pitching.
  11. I honestly think Jeter has been a bit UNDERRATED in my opinion. His ability to perform and lead a number of championship teams in the spotlight of New York is special. I think of him as basically Kirby Puckett in a MUCH tougher market. The Twins have had MAYBE 2-3 players TOTAL (Puckett, Carew, Killebrew) of Jeter's caliber in their existence.
  12. He'll be hurt 15-20 games into the season. The Yanks aren't here until the 4th of July. He won't even be here to boo at that point.
  13. I think a dark horse is Jerry Kill saying Richard Pitino has "Taken the hard road". D'Oh Kay!!
  14. If the offense regresses (very possible) its not likely to be made up for by slightly improved (Likely) pitching and the fact that defensively they are below average. They are probably right where they usually are at 68-72 wins. I'm not sure about why they are predicting Mauer to regress. That seems a bit odd. I think its much more likely that Dozier regresses (he's never had 2 good seasons in a row) and that Suzuki gives you nothing. Overall I don't see how this team scores runs. I don't see anyone but Mauer and Arcia hitting over .250, they have ZERO power, and they don't walk a ton.
  15. Coming of of surgery?? CHECK Former Twins player from 3-5 years ago coming off a horrible or mediocre at best year? CHECK Looks like Ryan has nailed down his core competency. No wonder he thinks you can't build a team through free agency.
  16. Hicks would be the best defensive outfielder on the roster right now and I would argue the 2nd best overall outfielder on the roster behind Arcia. So he had a bad half season. Its not like this team is stocked with offensive weapons. Cripes, Dozier hits .245 and people are calling him the next Joe Morgan. Give the kid a chance and he'll bounce back. I'll give you that he got off to a horrendous start but he was actually starting to stabilze when they sent him down. Its WAY too soon to cut bait with Hicks.
  17. I am not going to bash the Twins for the Nolasco deal at all. He is Cy Young compared to the garbage that has been taking the ball for the Twins the last few seasons. I don't think to can underestimate what the signings of Nolasco and Hughes mean until you realize you didn't pay $150 to see Cole DeVries or Pedro Hernandez take the hill at Target Field. As for Garza, there has to be some information we don't know yet. Why would he sign a well under market contract hours after Tanaka's huge deal presumably left him as the top picher available and a bunch of teams looking for piching?? Why would he go to the Brewers? If I had to guess there is something in his medicals that were causing teams to balk at more than 3 years and he scooped up the best available deal before more details came out. I am obviously just speculating but something is odd here.
  18. I'm a bit disappointed but honestly I'd rather have Stephen Drew at this point. The Twins need to realize you are allowed to improve the lineup in the offseason it's not an either/or proposition.
  19. Stacked bullpen?? The Twins bullpen is basically league average. I think there is a misconception they are "stacked" because the starting pitching has been historically awful, their defense is atrocious, and they have a Bottom 5 offense. The real answer to the question of who Villareal could replace is anyone except Perkins.
  20. "I can see the logic in holding off on signing more players to supplement that unit; simply put, almost every position on the field is either occupied by a promising young talent or will be soon enough. Spending big money on stopgaps might make sense for a contender, but not for a team coming off a third straight 90-loss campaign." This comment grossly over-estimates the talent level of this current roster and minor league system. Besides Arcia there isn't one "promising young talent" on the current roster. I wouldn't spend money on a 3rd baseman or center fielder (Sano, Buxton) but every other position on the diamond could use upgrades. The Twins are probably Bottom 5 at catcher and shortstop and have NOTHING in the minors on the horizon. And not spending money is exactly how a team loses 90+ games three straight years. Statements like that aren't close to factual. Its just like when teams say, "We don't want to make a trade to make a trade" to justify doing nothing to improve a horrible product. That is just nonsense. Successful organizations (not mater how many 90 loss seasons in a row they've had) improve their team by all available avenues, the draft, free agency, and trades. If the team isn't using all three and management is saying they are trying to win, they are flat out lying to you.
  21. I would like to think TR actually was forced to watch the starting pitching staff from last year he would see what everyone else did. That was not in anyway shape or form a professional staff. Cole DeVries, Andrew Albers, Scott Diamond, Pedro Hernandez, Liam Hendricks, PJ Walters, and Vance Worley should not be on major league staffs except to fill in for an injury. None of them have demonstrated any real upside. They are all minor league depth players and yet all of them saw significant time in the majors the last few seasons. Throw on top of that the guys with upside like Gibson were probably the worst of the sorry bunch. TR cannot just hand these guys jobs for no other reason than they are too cheap to field a professional staff. I commend them for finally figuring this out. I'm not saying Correia, Pelfrey, Nolasco, and Hughes make them a contender but they all can do enough to keep you in games abd probably make this team 10-15 games better. I'd say if they go into the year with what they have now they have a good shot at being .500. That is a step in the right direction.
  22. This was addition by subtraction. As a season ticket holder its a fantastic move since I'm guaranteed not to have to suffer through another one of his starts. He's never going to be a factor anywhere outside of maybe going to a giant park in the NL like San Diego. Even then he tops out as a 5th starter/fill in guy max. I'd say the same thing about Albers and Diamond. Finding 5th starters, while a Twins core competancy, is about the easiest thing in the game. There are probably 2-3 dozen 5th starters you could find in the middle of the season that would be just as good as Hendricks ever showed this team. The only people that should even care about this are the guys running the Rochester Redwings. He is a solid AAA arm and could help them win games.
  23. 1. Dream on 2. Guarantee the veteran catcher hit less than .220 last season 3. See #1 4. After Hicks the team isn't going to rush Sano 5. Deunsing will be sold to the fans as "spending money"
  24. I would be careful throwing around this statement: "Some choose to look at the Twins playoff record, and I understand that. However, what happens over a 162 game sample size is a more reliable indicator than a five game sample any day." That only makes statistical sense if you are comparing two like items. I don't think playoff baseball games and a random regular season game of a 96 loss team can be compared this way. Playoff baseball is a different game. Just because its a small sample doesn't mean if the results a statistically significant they can be ignored. Statistically Gardy is one of the worst playoff managers of all time. That's just a fact. That doesn't mean hes a bad regular season manager but it also means his results aren't because of chance or a small sample size.
  25. Exhibit A: That they've convinced you that "domination" of the Central is akin to actually competing for a title. Exhibit B: That you define "domination" as a team that has won exactly 0 playoff series in 10 years Exhibit C: This organization has lost over 280 games in the past three seasons and are still snowing the local media and Twins bloggers that Free Agency isn't needed even though there isn't one team that made the playoffs in either league that doesn't use it at all to supplement their rosters. Its a flat out lie that free agency isn't a valid way to build a winner. For every Oakland (who still actually use free agency effectively) there are dozens of teams (NY, BOS, TEX, CAL, CHW, CLE, LAD, SF, STL, PHI, ATL, WAS) that have built winners in the last decade using free agents to supplement their teams. And Oakland isn't even a valid example for the Twins because Oakland knows how to develop pitching which this organization hasn't done since Brad Radke.
