  1. It seems like General Managing 101. Only sell guys who are free agents at the end of the year (Capps) or guys who have value but not close to their salary (Morneau, Mauer) and keep productive guys under team control for reasonable money (Span, Willingham). Unfortunately I never have thought the Twins front office knows anything about what it takes to manage a roster properly. I'm not confident this trade deadline will be much different than the past few. They probably sit on their hands to avoid getting fleeced.
  2. Not that it matters, but Span should move to right with Revere in center. Its a somewhat interesting conversation but the fact remains is this is by far the worst roster in the majors and Gardy doesn't have a ton of options. Maybe the front office will decide to get off its hands and blow this thing up rather than act like they are Jason Marquis away from contending. Until then you could play a traffic cone in right and the team wouldn't be that much better or worse.
  3. I think we're past using Morneau and healthy in the same sentence. Its time to fire sale this thing and start from scratch. It might be time to pull the plug on Mauer. I've never seen a supposed "leader" this comfortable with losing.
  4. When your front office is this incompetent you are left discussing the merits of dumping a guy batting under .200 in favor of the worst hitter the majors has seen in 50 years. Good times.
  5. What gives you the idea this mess can play .500 baseball the rest of the year?? The Twins are more likely to win 55 games than 75 games at this point.
  6. Only in Minnesota is the staff ace praised for a lackluster performance in a loss that was slightly better than the epically disasterous starts before. Can't wait for tomorrow's "Clete Thomas Improving by Hitting Fly Ball Outs 5 Feet Further Today" article.
  7. It doesn't matter how many times I read it, I still don't buy Mauer's contract for the player he's become since signing it. I can't think of a position player that offers so little run producing stats at such a high number. There isn't one justification that says tying up 20%+ of your payroll for a guy that won't drive in 80 runs is a sound investment unless he's an elite defender (he's not) or a team leader (definitely not). I'm not saying booing him is right or wrong but that is an ugly contract for what the team is getting.
  8. I'd probably be a 7 or so if the front office would just admit they have a major rebuild ahead of them and stop signing these worthless patchwork guys that offer no future (here's to you Jason Marquis and Jamie Carroll). This team would have been better off letting all their free agents go (including the indefensable Matt Capps) and stocking up on picks. This is a 65-70 win team WITH Mauer and Morneau healthy. The problem is MN GMs don't get you need to get really bad to ever get really good. This Twins team is a teardown project. Almost anyone should be on the block. I'd rather build around the future guys (Dozier, Parmalee, Benson, Revere, etc) than watch Willingham play left field like he's trying to dodge hand grenades. I don't care if they win 72 games instead of 62. Both are total failure in my book. If the 62 loss team leads to shaving a year off rebuilding then that's was the team should do. Instead the Twins try to have it both ways. Its embarassing. As a result I'm more of a 4. And as for the "where's loyalty for the only team to win a title?" BS. It was 20 years ago turn the page. You want a dose of where this team ranks right now, they just had an opening day ceremony for a 10 YEAR OLD DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP. Good God.
  9. How exactly has Parmalee not "earned" his spot on the 25 man? He's done everything the organization has asked of him in the last 2 seasons. He was one of the only players who showed up at the end of last year and had a very good spring?? It doesn't mean he's going to succeed long term but at some point it makes no sense letting these guys rot on horrible teams in the Twins minor league system. What does anyone learn losing 2/3rd of their games at Rochester or New Britain? This Twins team won't win 70 games. You cannot expect more when you put the worst pitching staff the majors has seem in a decade out there. Why not give some of these young hitter a chance? We know you can go get Butera up here to claim his crown as worst hitter in baseball anytime we want.
  10. Low velocity nibblers are the "Twins way". I'd take a pitcher with an out pitch over a high contact ground ball guy every day. Especially one with an ERA over 9.50. Bottom line is with or without Marquis this pitching staff is easily on of the worst 2 or 3 in the Majors. They might a s well roll with Marquis at this point. They've got nothing in the minors or in camp better.
  11. Can you imagine Marquis taking 35 seconds between pitches on a 48 degree night in late April with the Twins down 6-0 in the 2nd inning?? The crowd is going to turn on this guy in a hurry. If you are going to suck at least do it like Nick Blackburn does. He's horrible but moves the game along.
  12. Normally I would agree that having 21 average to below average players to fill 3 spots seems like an effective way to build a bullpen until you actually realize that this article brought up a couple of times where its succeeded and neglected to mention the dozens upon dozens of times it doesn't work out. In the end the numbers will say that mediocre picting is mediocre pitching WAY more than it magically turns into good pitching. I would add that even if the Twins somehow manage to scape 3 decent guys out of the bunch, the "Top 4" mentioned (Capps, Perkins, Deunsing, and Swarzak) we already members of the worst bullpen in the majors last year. So basically the "plan" was to guarantee these 4 guys who weren't good last year (other than Perkins) get combined with a mixed bag of 3 additional guys from a pool of 21 average to below average pitchers to form an effective bullpen? That's not a proven way to build a winner. Its basically doing the same this that failed last time over and hoping for a different result.
  13. I'm not that pessimistic offensively. If Mauer comes back and Morneau gives you anything, the offense should be better than worst in the AL. I Like Willingham and Doumit. Doumit tends to get hurt but anything that keeps Butera off the field is a positive. The question that many of the "optimists" have failed to address is pitching and defense. Fanatic Jack is right when he points out that the Twins bullpen isn't just bad it might be the worst bullpen in baseball in maybe 20 years. Perkins is basically the only guy that would ever be counted on for a .500 team. The starting rotation is bottom 5 in the league and even if you think Liriano gives you solid innings, 10-12 wins, and an ERA under 4.00 they are, at best, a bottom 10 starting staff. There is no metric that you can trot out to make this pitching staff look anything but horrible. You have a bunch of light throwing guys who don't miss bats that give up ground balls to the worst defensive infield (Carroll should help) in the AL. They give up way too many hits and don't really minimize the walks as much as they used to. I don't blame management for not spending money (they are) but I do blame them for not calling it what it is, a complete rebuilding year. The $100 million roster is a complete failure and needs to be rebuilt. They are in a good position to trade a bunch of people not in the long range plans. They have zero chance at competing for a division title this year and that's OK. It shouldn't even be the goal. The roster needs to be rebuilt so they can legitimately compete in the next couple of years.
