  1. Wait, the twins bunted in the top of the 3rd? With a dude on 2nd and nobody out? Kill me now
  2. That's my take as well. I do not really care about who we gave up here so much as what we got back. Especially with an eye toward next year. The Twins really needed some difference makers, and since they are unwilling to use what they have in AAA, I think we all thought they will make a mildly bold move. Not a perplexing move. Oh well, that is why we should always temper our expectations when it comes to TR.
  3. Classic Terry Ryan. I cannot wait to hear the spin on this. He will extol the virtues of Jepsen and mention that he can sometimes miss bats....then he will say "Plus we are getting Buxton and Nolasco back soon, and that is just like making a huge trade" I would love to know which scout/scouts are recommending this garbage.
  4. I got to say, the Twins were not looking at advanced stats like that back then, you are correct. Shame on them, and yes TB was way ahead of the curve. However, the twins were stuck in their old ways (2nd to last team in MLB to have a sabermatrician on their payroll), which was (and still kinda is) TR's way. In addition, Terry was the one who gave the job to BS, a pencil pusher, in way over his head, not necessarily a b-ball guy. He also left him holding the biggest trading chip in twins history (Santana), and the contract negotiations of one of the most popular Twins ever, in Hunter. Not particularly wise. In today's world we would savage that trade with all the information available. Back then, a lot of us were simply using the information the Twins were. This is all revisionist history. I agree with Mike, the focus should be on how long of a leash does "Trading Terry" have?
  5. He should not be signed under any circumstances next year. I know we need someone on the Twins commercials to play the part of a buffoon (maybe Joe can do that next year), but we need that RF spot freed up. However, the over under mentioned above is completely accurate!
  6. I don't believe that May is on their trade market at all. With Meyer fizzling out, Ryan is not going to let the only producing piece, of trading Spn/Revere, leave when showing so much promise. I just don't think Terry is aiming that high. I would also be shocked if they traded Hicks. Although I would have no problem with this, as he has proven nothing over 3 years, except that he has been very good as of late. Sell high. I agree with another poster, if you feel Sano can play third then trade Ploufe now, while his value is high and before we have to commit to him long term.
  7. Bases juiced, 2 out (after Eddie whifs), and we have to go with Nunez, because we have no other options...shame. That 4 runners left in scoring position between Nunez and Robinson.
  8. Agreed. The bottom 4 of Nunez, Esco, Suzuki and Robinson, does not instill a lot of fear.
  9. I think it's a legit questions, but c'mon, this is the Twins. No chance they run Terry out of town. They probably will extend him, after he signs Torii, Pelfrey to extentions, and then brings in 3 - 2 million dollar relievers next year fresh off the scrap heap.
  10. Why give up an out, when you already have a guy on 2nd, and your best extra base hitter up? WTF? It's the 5th inning. Has anyone paid attention to our bullpen? We will need more than one run to win this game. Man.
  11. The Twins managing over the 40 man roster has been baffling for years, even going back into the mid Gardy years. Remember the year we started the season with 3 catchers on the roster, with a 4th who played catcher and other positions. Those were wasted 40 mans spots. That discussion could send this thread very far off topic though.
  12. Agreed, This team is teetering by a thread on heading down a dark path. Somehow, this year they have avoided prolonged losing stretches. If Perk is not 1st half Perk, it really doesn't matter who we pick up for the bullpen... Also, didn't May come in and get one guy last night at the end of the 8th? Knowing that the game most likely was going to extras, I might have brought him out in the 9th and saved Perk until the 10th. Easy to 2nd guess, but May has got to have the best arm in the bullpen...use it. I am not sure how Duensing has earned all that trust back (from like 3 years ago), as he was only good for about a month....
  13. Yup, good catch, my miss there. Makes a little more sense. A little....
  14. A struggling Rosario bats against Wilson last night (L vs. L) and Robertson bats against their rhp ace??? Not sure that logic flies unless there are extreme splits in Molly's favor...
  15. So we are saying/assuming we are in contention just this once? I know that is a bit literal of me, but I think we were hoping the Twins learned something from the past. You must build from within. Just because we are sniffing around making a one game play off, does not mean we should make major moves at the deadline, because we are going for it. I would think the idea is you get to the point of regular contention, with confidence in your team, then make the moves necessary to put you over the top. Whatever it takes yes. Seems to me, there are too many questions about this team to worry about C, SS, and RP (which is a lot)....I mean, it's been smoke and mirrors to get this far to begin with right? The league is down, but are we confident a couple of decent moves puts us over the top for a title? Rosario, Hicks, Buxton, Sano...even with these guys we don't know what we have...
  16. Mike you've made this point before, and to a certain extent I agree. Especially if I felt these "banked" wins were sustainable to mean something in the 2nd half. I just don't fee that they will continue their winning ways. They can sign an arm in the bullpen in the off season, and should see what they have in house. If they were going to make a trade for a legit SS or Catcher, I would be open to that, but at what costs? We make 2 or 3 trades and stay relevant this year. Is that worth it? Are we actually going to win the play in wild card game? I guess I am torn, but I feel like we should be getting better in upcoming years. The FO can sign the right people, to compliment (or trade) we should continue to improve. Making "go for it" trades this year, just doesn't make sense, IMO.
  17. To me the issue is pretty clear. Escobar is an upgrade over Santana. Tough to dispute that. If some of you want to make a trade, that is fine as Escobar is probably not a legit everyday SS. However, he is plenty ok enough to carry us through the trade deadline and a number of games beyond. Jed Lowrie is on a reahab stint for the stros...now that he has lost his job at SS, where do they play him??? Do they trade him?
  18. Maybe...however, my guess is that the Twins will be signing Torii for one more year (I would not advise this, but you know TR will), so we may not get that out of Hicksy for 2 more years.
  19. I think a 5-4 record over those 9 games would be a huge success. That would mean we are 10 games above .500 right before the trade deadline. However, I think 3-6 or 4-5 is more realistic, considering how we typically play on the west coast, and against the Yankees. I guess we will get to see if this last series against Detroit, really is a defining moment to the season.
  20. Confirmed that he was sent to Chatanooga...Sano coming up?
  21. I'm hearing Vargas was sent down...to AA. Is this true?
  22. I think that is too broad of a generalization. Hunter has loosened the club house, no doubt. However, better starting pitching (adequate fielding) and clutch hitting have been more responsible (or were more responsible). Torii has outperformed what I thought he would bring so far, and that is great. However, I am terrified that because of this, and his popularity, that Ryan will sign him again for next year (even as he regresses or if he regresses a bit). Causing the log jam, that we will have there, (in addition to 1b, and SP), preventing younger higher upside prospects to get their shot.
  23. Agreed, you cannot have enough good up the middle prospects. With Santana somewhat predictably crashing to earth, and Escobar struggling, we need to know we have some depth at SS. Polonco is not far away, but I'm not sure he will stick at short.
  24. Great article Nick, I think you summed up what a lot of us are feeling. It's ok to be skeptical, but it's also ok to enjoy the run. I do have a worry about the Twins though. If we stay somewhat competitive, up into July, will the twins be willing to promote (demote) the right players, even though we are technically in the race for the playoffs? Will they hold onto Stauffer/Duensing (instead of Oliveros, Archer and Tomkin). Will they keep Robertson/Shafer on the roster? Will they continue to let Santana struggle? I think we have to keep that eye to the future and be aggressive, even if we continue to win.
  25. I believe the Twins were 12 and 12 at this time the last two years (according to Ruesse), so my guess is in late June, we will not have to be worrying about wild card vs. rebuilding.
