I'm actually optimistic about this team's long-term prospects, unless they start trading away their top youngsters. But you have to concede that for the next couple years, this team is going to look like a bunch of guys transitioning from AAA to the majors. Forget about playoffs with this group, it's far too soon. They may start coming together sometime around 2018, but probably not before. For that reason they should trade or DFA as many veteran players as possible right now, and then start playing younger guys. Don't bring in any more mediocre pitchers or players from other teams. Use the mediocre players from our own system. Might as well get started.

Article: Setting Up For The Second Half
jimbo92107 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Mostly what you said, then Berrios up, trade Dozier, play Polanco at 2B second half, Sano 3B, Buxton back down, OF of Grossman, Rosie, Kepler, Santana #4. Nunez back to utility, subbing fairly often at 3B and 2B. Possibly trade Nunez and Bring up Beresford for utility to see what he's got. Changed my mind on Tonkin. Ever since he got zapped on the thigh by a line drive, he's been pitching just a little pissed off, the way a good reliever should. Keep him as long as he stays aggressive. Meanwhile, let the musical chairs begin for any pitcher in AAA that's got a chance to be decent. Let Rogers try starting. Let Wheeler have a go. Etcetera, etcetera. Crank up the lab, Igor; time to cook up a monster.- 96 replies

Article: Brian Dozier Pulls Himself Out Of Slump
jimbo92107 replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
First couple months, pitchers were relentless pitching Dozier down and outside, almost never anything inside, except ankle high. For some reason they are starting to pitch him more around the zone, I don' know why. I would NEVER give him anything inside, other than chin music or throw it at his foot. Despite a relatively hot month, I'm skeptical that Dozier is going to stay hot. There is nothing stopping pitchers from returning to what killed his average so far this season. I would always make him prove he can take the ball the other way. He's just not that dangerous going oppo.- 35 replies

Article: Trade Eduardo Nunez: Would You?
jimbo92107 replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If I'm the Mets, Royals or Indians, my first pick for 3rd base is Plouffe, not Nunez. Plouffe is a much better 3B fielder, and his power (usually) is better than Nunez, who still profiles better as a utility infielder. As for the price of either of these guys, I don't look for anybody near the MLB level. I look for athletic teens that can fill up the lowest levels of the minor league system, then invest in better training. This season already is completely shot, and the next wave of Twins talent is already emerging from AAA and AA. We don't need any more blocking by mediocre veterans. -
Article: Gleeman & The Geek, Ep 258: See Ya Arcia
jimbo92107 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Max Kepler's power isn't like Mauer's at all. Kepler knows how to turn on an inside pitch and drive the crap out of it. Kepler isn't like Buxton, either. Kepler knows the strike zone, and he doesn't flail at a lot of curves outside the zone. His balance is amazing, and his swing is compact, fluid and powerful. It's actually as sweet a swing as Mauer's, but geared for center-right, where Mauer's swing is designed to go oppo.- 1 reply

Article: Twins Designate Oswaldo Arcia
jimbo92107 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hard to say if the Twins will eventually regret this, but it's definitely the best news for Arcia. He's simply not going to get enough playing time to hone his hit tool with the logjam in this team's outfield. I like the Valencia comparison. Arcia has talent, but he needs consistent reps at the mlb level to find his game. I hope he winds up with Oakland, Colorado, etc. Somewhere that appreciates power hitting.- 267 replies

Article: A Grim Prognosis For Glen Perkins
jimbo92107 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins must now operate under the assumption that Glen Perkins is done. That's actually good, because until now they were pretending it wasn't so. Now they can decide to plant Trevor May in the closer role, which they should have done a while ago. Once May has some certainty what his role is, he will work on picking the four corners with his heater, which he started doing last season. Four corners to get ahead, then hard slider away or 2-seam away to finish. -
Buxton is reacting with about half of a plan. He's avoiding swinging at anything outside, but that lets a guy like CC Sabbathia easily strike him out with his patented back door curves. Buxton needs to do a lot more planning out each at-bat. That means choosing "your pitch" from among the pitches you know the pitcher can and does throw during the game. You can't just say, "I'm going to look for a fastball in," like Dozier has been hoping for all year. You also can't just say, "I'm not going to swing at anything that starts outside," the way Buxton is doing. You have to look for a pitch that you're likely to get, then hit it where it's pitched. Buxton should have noted the pattern by his third at-bat, that CC was bending slow curves over the outside corner because Buxton wasn't moving a muscle on those pitches. A smart hitter can set up a pitcher that way; Buxton isn't a smart hitter...yet. BTW, Joe Mauer did set up a pitcher earlier this season by griping just a bit on a lefty's curve outside. The pitcher noticed the gripe, and threw Joe another one. Joe was sitting on the pitch. Bang. Someday I hope to see Buxton look at the ump after a slow, outside curve for a strike. Shake his head like ain't no justice, then smack the next outside curve for a double to right. It's a little like poker.

Sabbathia noticed immediately that Buxton will not swing at any pitch that starts outside the zone. Thus, he has struck out Buxton twice looking with curve balls that caught the outside corner. I'm a little surprised that Bruno didn't tell Buxton to look for that pitch. I called it as soon as he stepped up for his last at-bat. It looks like Buxton is eager to do what his hitting coach tells him, but it will take a while before he learns how to work the outside of the plate. Right now he's simply not swinging at anything outside, as was duly noted by CC Sabbathia.

Actors tell each other, "Break a leg." I wonder if a pitcher exiting the game should say, "Down the middle," to his replacement. Same idea, really. You don't honestly want an actor to break his leg, and you don't honestly want your relief pitcher to throw it down the middle. Mention the worst to dispel its power?

So long to wait..! I wanna see a rotation of Jay, Stewart, Gonsalves, Berrios, and Duffey! I wanna see Shaggy and Burdi mowing 'em down late! I wanna see Polanco at 2B, Gordon at SS, and Sano at 3B! I wanna see an outfield of Grossman, Buxton, Kepler and Rosario! Mauer and Park at 1B... Garver and Turner at C... So long to wait..!- 33 replies

Granted, but my point is to use the rest of this season as a tryout for everybody that might possibly have value at the mlb level. This is the time to find out, and they're all cheap. The pitchers in question are unlikely to implode if the first guy they face hits a home run. Unlike Berrios, a guy like Pat Dean has seen his stuff get pounded, and his heart rate doesn't go crazy. Same should be true for the other veteran AAA pitchers. It's quite possible that Darnell and Wimmers just don't have enough talent to be major leaguers, but Wheeler might. Beresford has literally earned a shot at being a utility infielder, especially if the Twins deal Nunez. We won't know unless the Twins start making these moves.
-
It really is disturbing how few good starting pitchers have emerged from the Twins system. Could it possibly come down to bad draft picks? No way. There must be some fundamental flaw in the way the Twins develop pitchers. On the other hand, maybe we're looking at the end of an era of the Twins drafting "ground ball, weak contact" pitchers rather than strike out pitchers. Maybe Gibson is the last of that era. Duffey is a strike out pitcher with a great curve. Berrios is a strike out pitcher. They just brought up Chargois, a strike out pitcher. Dean and Rogers are more in the former mold, but so far they both seem serviceable. If they bring up Wheeler and Darnell, the Twins would have more lefties than anybody else in the league. That at least would be interesting.

Moving all the veterans (including the younger ones) isn't about getting that much in return. It's about clearing the way for lots of much younger, cheaper players in the Twins system, guys like Berresford, Wheeler, Darnell, Polanco, Wimmers, etc. If the Twins plan to be competitive a few years from now, this is a perfect opportunity to give extended tryouts to lots of young, cheap players, most of whom may not stick, but it no longer matters in this flushed season. One side benefit is that it allows some of these veterans to escape a lousy situation in Minnesota for possibly a more promising situation elsewhere. Guys like Plouffe, Dozier, Escobar, Nunez, etc, deserve a chance to do something other than lose, lose, lose on a team with the worst pitching in the league. If the Twins can get a decent low-A prospect for each of these guys, they should go for it. Meanwhile, they've got to clear out Hughes, Nolasco, Jepsen and Santana. They might get another low-A prospect for Abad, same with Kintzler and Tonkin, who might firm up into a decent set-up guy.

I was wondering earlier if there were more guys like Robbie Grossman floating around the league, just looking for a chance to shine. Maybe the Twins lucked into two of them, including Daniel Palka.
