    There was an old adage in baseball, and I think it applies to Hicks. "Can he hit the Curve Ball"--many great athletes could not overcome this. I think this is the key to his advancement. And hitting the curve is not an easy thing.

    I agree with everything that above fellow states, except the 65 win season. It probably will be worse!!

    By all accounts the Twins are a mid-market team. This small market stuff gets old. If the Pohlads wanted a competitive team on the field there would be one. They are the ones who have to step up to the plate.

    I completely agree with Verducci. Listened to his roundtable discusssion on MLB network yesterday--most of the panel(Costas, Verducci, Russo and a few others) did a good job in evaluating the steroid era. Those on the panel were very adamant against admitting steroid users. Only one writer would admit Bonds and Clemens. What bothers me the most is the records. I can remember when we would always say, "Can anybody beat the Babe this year, or can anybody beat Maris' 6l? Now those types of discussions are over because of Steroids.

    Just the opposite of the above. If he comes back to health and regains his old form then Parmalee should be traded. There is a big disparity in ability between the two if Morneau is healthy. And Morneau is still young enough to be a mainstay, along with the young players coming up such as Sano.

    A host on a show on Baseball America(XM radio) today said that the snag was due to a problem with the physical.

    1. Hicks isn't quite ready yet You don't know that. Only those that work with him everyday do---like the minor league staff. Saw him play in Florida last winter--pretty impressive with his size and speed. Hit a long double off the center field wall the day I was there.

    I agree with the above statement completely. It makes so much sense. Also, there is too much worrry on this site about how the Pohlads spend their money. Their obligation is to put a competitive team on the field, especially after the new ballpark was built. Bottom line: If you want to be competitive, and your minor leagues can't produce the necessary talent(at certain positions) then you must pay market price. Not a guarantee--but, it is the most sensible way to get back into contention.

    Only to fill out the Rochester roster. It doesn't appear that the first three have much of a future in the big leagues. Just not quite there talent wise.

    Seth, I admire your writing and I appreciate everything you contribute to Twins baseball talk, but I totally don't get this perspective. We've had enough of this route to failure over the last decade, and a pathetic three-and-out against the Yankees puts a far worse taste in my mouth than a stinky season with the promise of a stronger draft. It bothers me that people say "anything can happen in the playoffs" --which is proveably false. Carl Pavano cannot magically become Curt Schilling in the postseason. Danny Valencia cannot become Miguel Cabrera. Ron Gardenhire cannot become Tony LaRussa. You get out of the playoffs what you bring into it. The Twins brought nothing into the postseason over the last decade, and got exactly that out of it. The trophy is never a guarantee, but, c'mon, there's a reason why the Yankees considered drawing the Twins a first-round bye. And they were right. I agree with this analysis. However, I think we need a willing ownership. I don't know if the desire is there for a successful team that looks for world championships. Now that the stadium has been built for them they seem to be satisfied.

    Really hope you are right on this one! A 4 era in the American league is pretty good. Wonder what the Twins feel internally on Hendricks future?

    Without getting into the stat stuff--it maybe that Liam just doesn't have the ability to do well at the next level. He has had plenty of opportunity--something like 17 starts with one win. I just don't like the action of his ball---it comes in too flat. He reminds of a shortstop throwing the ball--kind of a slinger, or little bit of a short arm action. But, I hope I'm wrong on this opinion.

    Well...details and the super remote possibility that someone else may have a different personal taste or opinion. Can you point to the part where I stated or implied something different? Do you have a take on "the Mauer vs Puckett Comparison" or did you just drop by to, yet again, take potshots at other posters? Yes, another potshot by this guy!

    USAChief has got this right. I remember listening to Baseball America(XM radio) this spring, and a caller from Iowa asked about the Twins. The hosts said they couldn't figure out the Twins. They said that when a team has 94 wins(two years ago), most clubs would try and take the next step and add players. But the Twins chose to go the other way and not sign players, etc. Therefore, improvement depends upon the Pohlads. When they decide to have a winning team again, we will, most likely, have one!

    Seth has it exactly right. However, sometimes athletes have an ability to do something without the required fundamentals. Like a hockey player who doesn't skate well, etc. but, he can just put the puck into the net. Same with Slama--maybe there is something about him that he can just get people out! That is why he deserves a chance.

    Are you being serious? Whitey Ford? Warren Spahn? I guess Mackey wasn't arguing against a phantom viewpoint after all. No, I'm not saying that he will be a Ford , or Spahn--I just think that he has some of the characteristics in pitching style that those two had. So he has some potential that is to be determined. And he seems eager to learn. Basically, all I said was that you don't know his potential as of now.

    Pretty much this. All I was saying is that while Diamond is the best pitcher in a bad team (and would be if his ERA was a full run higher) he's never going to lead a quality staff for a contender. This isn't a guy you can match up against legitimate No. 1 starters in the playoffs. To me, that's the closest definition of an "ace" although I really don't like using the term because of its ambiguity. What Diamond has proven is that he's a legitimate major-league starter and probably a guy you can slot in the middle of a good rotation. And there's nothing wrong with that. Nick, you don't know that he cannot be a leader of a staff. He doesn't throw real hard. But, neither did Whitey Ford, or Warren Spahn. He does have some of their attributes like good control, changing speeds, etc. He comes over the top and hides the ball real well. Now if he could develop a real good change up like Ford--it could be possible that he could be a leader of a good staff. I'm just saying that it is possible.

    Carroll just missed a great play early in the game and had a crazy hop that was hardly his fault. If you look at advanced stats he has been exceptional at SS, great at 3B and awesome at 2B. The guy can flat out field. Carroll is just a good baseball player. I really enjoy watching him play. If Dozier and Michael after over 3,000 at bats have a .274 lifetime average and can play the field like Jamie, the Twins would be very happy!

    I agree with you daveha---Mauer, Willingham and Morneau should be the heart of this club for the next few years. At least until the Sano group is ready. Hopefully some quality free agent pitchers are signed for next season.

    The above statement makes a lot of sense. Player acquistion, player development, and fielding a competitive team, depends on the Pohlads. They will decide(the Pohlads) when this team will be competitive again. I don't know how important fielding a winning team is to them? Remember, this is the ownership that tried to sell the team a few years ago, and also would have contracted the team a few years later.

    I would keep Carroll. It is worth the 3 million for him to just mentor the young players. Especially the infielders. I know some will disagree, but, I think he is one of the best players on the team. Look at all of the positive attributes that he can bring to the team. Such as hitting to the opposite field(hitting behind the runner), proper bunting technique, can field well at 2nd, SS and 3rd base. Knows how to work the count. Just watch him closely when a ball is hit he has such great anticipation--the other night he fielded a fly ball toward the first base stands-before he caught the ball he was aready looking at the infield as to where the runners were... I think you need a few guys on a team that can mentor the youngsters like Jamie. Actually, if he is traded to a team like the Nationals, he should do very well. Players like that usually can play better when they are part of a strong team. Then he can just play his game.
