  1. Gunnarthor--The point is: The Twins are not a small market team. They are a team that doesn't have to go through the rebuilding mode the way they did in the past. They are in a financial position to acquire quality free agents. Also, they could have kept Kubel, Cuddyer, and Nathan-signed a few pitchers and then wait until the young guys are ready. I don't know if you listen to baseball on XM with Kevin Kennedy, Casey Stern, Jim Douquette(sp) plus other baseball analyists? But, most independent experts predict another season like last year. In other words, the rebuilding could be done in another way without a complete dismantling of the team. The results will show at the gate by the middle of the season.
  2. This problem is deeper than Gardy. He is just part of a whole organization that needs revamping. It goes to philosophy -- the front office--the Pohlads with an unwillingness to step up to the plate and sign quality free agents. When the strength of your farm system is in the lower minors-you then do like the Cardinals and sign what your team needs to contend. I listened to the baseball network on XM yesterday and a guy from Iowa called in asked about the Twins. Casey Stern said that the Twins are an organization that he can't understand. He said that most organizations when they almost get to the top try to add pieces to go to the next level. But, the Twins have taken the other approach and are dismantling the team. You would have to assume that the Pohalds have told Ryan to cut payroll. Again, this organization needs a transformation in philospphy!
  3. Was visiting with a couple of ex-gopher baseball players (both were captains in different eras) and they both thought that one of Baker's problems is walking around too much between pitches. Wanders too much--this causes a loss of focus. This ,of course, is based upon a healthy Baker. When healthy he has a very live arm. Blackburn's problems have always been the lack of secondary pitch. His breaking ball was so flat--we used to call it a "nickel" curve. Ever notice that most great pitchers(or strikeout pitchers) have a breaking ball that has an extreme downward break--like Sandy Kofax, or Camilo Pascual. Like Bert says--drop the breaking ball into the dirt.
  4. I saw the game today in Dunedin and Parmalee looked really good at the plate. Hit a solid single and a long home run over the right center wall. Definitely ready for the next step. The swing was very powerful. When we arrived at the park, Gardy was signing autographs and taking pictures with the fans along the 3rd base line. I have criticized Grady in the past--but he was sure good with the fans.
  5. I agree with Fanatic Jack on his philosophy toward the Twins. The cutting of the payroll in the face of a new stadium, revenues among the highest in the league and tearing apart your team the last two years-- Look at what happened in the last two seasons: completely decimating the relief corp. Why such a wholesale change at one time? This season--not signing the core of your power base--Cuddyer, Kubel, Thome, not signing an elite reliever(Joe Nathan). What does this tell the fans and the team? This team is not built to last a long season. The only way we can have success is to play above ability--which is rare! This ownership two years ago was considered the richest in baseball--Forbes Mag. The strength of this organization in in the lower minors. If so, then what should the ownership do until this group of players are ready for the majors? Sign quality free agents until this group is ready. But, this takes the will of the ownership. Now if was like Pittsburg, I would say ok--but, this franchise has the assets, but not the will. This is all on the Pohlads. Ryan and Gardenhire know what they are dealing with!
  6. You don't have to be a stat guy to determine if Manship should make the roster. Just watch him pitch! He should not be on the final roster, period.
  7. Despite not dripping with much insight, Gardenhire’s assessment may have more to do with understanding how he is accomplishing this scorched-earth policy. T Parker, Are you saying that a guy who has been a successful big league manager and played in the big leagues doesn't understand these things? Or am I reading this the wrong way.
  8. They only have to sign elite free agent power hitters until the Sano's arrive on the scene. This is what the contending teams do. With the new revenues this team is in position to do this. What I'm saying is just not my idea! Listened to MLB on XM radio yesterday morning and they were talking about the Twins. Actually, it was very depressing if you are a Twin Fan. Basically, what they said is that the Twins should retool. But, without touching the young players-who do you trade? There isn't much there-Baker is a mid-rotation starter at best, Morneau isn't healthy and is expensive, nobody really wants Joe's contract under the present setup. They thought the guy with the most value at this time is Willingham. One of the announcers was Bob Nightengale--don't know who the other one was. This was morning show on at around 9:00 am eastern time.
  9. Again power hitters will not want to sign with the Twins. Until we do something with this park it is not appealing to the elite players. And we need to sign elite free agents until the younger players arrive. Look at Kubel, Cuddyer had to change his approach and the list goes on. I agree with Fanatic Jack on this one!
  10. If your a left handed power hitter(either developed through the farm system, or a possible free agent), why would you want to play for the Twins?
  11. Where did this crazy idea of the Front Office losing faith in the fans come from? It makes no sense. This is a one way street--ownership is responsible for putting a quality, or respectable team on the field. This is an ownership problem period! They could have signed quality free agents until the Sano group of players are ready!!
  12. Agree with Fanatic Jack! The center right wall is too high--needs to be adjusted. Also, it will be hard to keep a left- handed power hitter in the system. Why would such a player want to play there with such an obstacle. The hitter has to adjust his swing to much. Kubel says it like it is.
  13. This article really bothers me in that it gives credence to the Twins bargain basement philosophy. Do you really like to always pick up the leftovers. I'm sick of it------As a Twin fan I always feel like we are going to a garage sale--compared to the contending teams.
  14. Fantastic Jack, your basically right in your analysis of the Twins philosophy, etc. However, I'm concerned that so many Media types that work for the station that announce Twin games are not capable of being objective. That is one reason we never get criticism of the Pohlads. This cutting payroll after a few years is completely disheartening. I do think that the reason that Smith was fired was because he wanted to increase payroll and be competitive. There is enough financial assets available now in the organization to be competitive until the lower minor players are ready-- if the Pohlads are willing!
  15. The only way that you can compete when your farm base is not ready--where the top talent is in the low minors-- You sign free agents and don't make trades. But, this takes a lot of money! That is what the Phillies and other teams contending teams do. Twins ownership has comparable financial capabilities as the Philles. We are not a small market team anymore! So it is the will of the ownership. However, if you accept what the Twins philosophy is then Seth's approach is correct in his analysis. He knows the players and the system as well or better than anybody.
  16. We have discussed this problem before. It is all philosophy with the ownership. If they wanted(really wanted) a contending team this season they would have have acquired the proper free agents until the lower minor players are ready, This would take 2-3 years. However, they have chose not to do this. The result will be a lower level team for the next few years. And if you make a mistake in the minors(players drafted) it will take another 6 years for another crop to come through. Terry Ryan has stated this in his past tenure. If you listen regularly to MLB on XM, as I do, there are not many pundits that think the Twins will do very well. And most publications predict them for 4 th in the Central. How can you have a strong team if in the past 2 seasons you have decimated the relief corp, rid yourself of one of the best relievers in the league, eliminated 3 of your strongest hitters--especially your power base? So it is an ownership problem--nothing Terry can do when told to cut payroll. This is really going to turn the fan base off by mid-season.
