  1. I voted for Diamond and like Stringer, it has to do with injury concerns. I don't consider Diamond an elite pitcher (1 or 2). But I see him as a poor mans maddox. Watching him pitch for a year and listening to a number of interviews, he seems like the kind of guy that will take care of himself and pitch for 10 plus years with few if any injuries. I would expect him to settle into the .500 type pitcher, that will eat up 200 innings per year and then just keep coming back year after year. Hopefully he is our 1 or 2 this year and over the next 5 years he will drop a spot a year until he is battling for a rotation spot.
  2. If 5 championships and 7 WS appearances in a span of less than 15 years is "checkered" I'll take it. You may not be old enough to remember the 1980 to 1995 period where they spent a ton of money with virtually nothing to show for it. Sorry, I should have been more specific with my comparison.
  3. The Yankees spent a lot of money over a long time with a very checkered success rate. It appears that the Dodgers are on the same track. The money can hide a lot of the mistakes.
  4. No on Dempster, that 3rd year will turn out to be a mistake for anyone making the deal. If we give someone a longer term deal, lets make sure he is young enough to still perform in the last years of the contract.
  5. They are spending a lot of money and I don't know if they are going to be that much better. When you start with Kemp and Kershaw, it really shouldn't take much to move into an elite team, but I'm not sure the money they are spending is well placed.
  6. Ok, you have me interested but what do you propose we ship back to the Dodgers in the trade for Capuano? Think they want Carroll back? I don't think they have a need for Morneau any more at first base. Minor leaguers?
  7. Correct. This is the one and only way it makes sense. Take advantage of the market. If the center fielder market bubble has now burst and we can sign him for next to nothing and then have the option of trading him away at the trade deadline for more pieces, ok I'm a buyer. But this is not going to happen with Boras as the agent. Buy low, sell high! Works in the stock market, it is difficult in the FA market and I think our money could be better spent (invested) in other areas.
  8. We have punted for the 2013 season. I don't think that is a bad thing, but we are not going to contend this year. If it's 4th and a mile at your own 20 yard line, you don't "go for it", the correct call is to punt and look forward to your next possession. I like the moves that TR has made. We aren't signing washed up pitchers to one year deals, everything he has done so far insures that we are looking forward to 2014 and beyond. Not sure how he is going to do it, but I would hope that any investment in the pitching FA market would benefit us not only this year but would be even more geared to 2014 and beyond. Sign quality and lock them up for more than 1 or 2 years.
  9. I agree birdwatcher. TR mentioned that the trade with the Phillies had been going on for some time. I wonder if they always wanted Revere? I have a feeling that TR was shocked by the FA center field money thrown around after the span trade. After the Span trade, I think TR had every intention of keeping Revere, but his hand was forced when he saw the return he could get at that moment. Supply and demand is a crazy thing. Span was and is the better player, yet Revere brought back the better return. I give TR a lot of credit for taking action, even after he probably realized that he traded Span a little too quickly. I like both trades, but I think we will feel the Revere return was better looking back 2 or 3 years from now.
  10. I don't think he is an ace, but I agree that he is a perfect fit for what we are (should be) looking for. Young, team control through 2014-2015 (when we should be back competing again. I think there is a huge advantage for a pitcher to get out of Texas. His numbers would look much better with half his games played at Target Field. Does it seem that all of the SP we have heard rumors about are lefty?
  11. A career .234 hitter with 28 dingers in over 1400 career ABs isn't going to challenge Plouffe for playing time?
  12. What? you don't think he is resigning with the Indians?
  13. Can Ponder Pitch, he should have a bunch of free time over the next few seasons. Too bad he isn't left handed,
  14. It would be nice getting a least one starting pitcher that was thrown to the curb by another team. I'm all for giving guys a second chance but I don't think we should use them to build the foundation of our pitching staff. Sign a few of these guys at 6th or 7th options, just in case we have an injury or one of these guys recaptures past success, but not as one of the 5 opening day starters.
  15. Well jack, I guess we have to wait a week and see what TR has up his sleeve. I really don't think we can trust a lot of what is currently being reported as TR has never been one to tip his hand. I was not encouraged by this quote in todays pioneer press, "I don't think we'll be compelled to spend a lot of money without the legitimate chance of getting a good return on it," Ryan said. "If (fans) are expecting that, they're probably going to be disappointed. I'll give innings to guys we have and try to build a good future before I just waste money (on a free agent)." I did say I would be surprised if we don't have two new starters by this time next week, I didn't say anything about whether I would be disappointed in who those two new starters would be. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. Let him make some moves. I'm happy with the Span trade, maybe he will surprise us and come up with a good FA signing, that helps in 2013 and beyond.
  16. I will be very surprised if next week at this time, we do not have two new starting pitchers under contract.
  17. You didn't mention whether you bought anything? I had to work today, but was trying to talk my son into going and purchasing me a christmas gift. I'm pretty sure he never left the house. Did they have pretty much the same stuff that was displayed at the Kiosk in Center field the last couple weeks of the season? I've never been a autograph collector and I have never purchased any memorabilia. I don't think purchasing stuff from a 90+ loss team is the place to start.
  18. I think Justin will improve on his 2012 numbers. He may not get back to an elite level, but I definitely see him improving to the point where we will want to extend him or trade him at the deadline. Either way, I don't see the logic in making the decision now.
  19. We need pitchers. He's a pitcher. Give him a call and get him on the team.
  20. No inside knowledge of how all of this took place, but I would think that during the organizational meetings, they looked at the top 20 minor league pitchers throughout all of baseball and were looking to get one of them in a trade. Hopefully this guy was graded out as being pretty high on their list. I'm sure there were guys with more minor league innings on the list they were working off of, but as in most situations not all of them were available through a trade. I wonder how much insight we will get into the scouting and trade negotiations that lead up to this transaction. Knowing the Twins and TR, probably not much.
  21. I'm reading into this, that TR really liked this guy. I think this really is a big hit to our 2013 lineup. We now have a below average Def outfield with both Parmelee and Willingham playing everyday. I also think Span was a much better lead off guy than Ben will ever be. Again, TR must really be high on this guy to give up span and know we are in for a rocky 2013 on the field.
  22. Span will be missed in 2013, but we are looking to 2014 and beyond with this move.
  23. I can live with this. We just have to trust that our scouts did their job and that he has a good chance to continue his progression and quickly move his way through the organization. As usual, only time will tell if this is a good trade.
  24. Ok, TR made the trade. Not looking at 2013 for a trade for the future.
  25. I think it comes down to whether you want 5 starters in the rotation or if you just want to sign a bunch of guys to create some competition for starting pitching spots. This isn't 3B, we need legitimate starters. Guys that we can count on to take the ball every 5th day. Pavano isn't one of those guys. I liked him while he was here, but we need better in 2013. The question remains, will TR find better in 2013. If he signs Pavano, he is going down the wrong path.
