  1. If this was a permanent move I would agree with you, but since it will be just a 1 time spot start I am okay with it. The Twins won't need a 5th starter again until the DH on 6/30 and both Pavano and Walters will be eligible to come off of the DL or we could call up De Vries to pitch one of the games. I believe the new CBA permits expanding the roster for Doubleheaders. With that being said, next Thursday is the last off day before the AS Break (11 games in 10 days) so they will need a 5th starter from the 30th on.
  2. I think Baker is going to have to settle for a 1 year "prove he's healthy" incentive laden offer next year. My guess is his base salary is going to be between 1-3M with 5+M in incentives.
  3. I think a SP ERA between 3.50 and 4.00 would definitely produce 30 more wins provided we have the offense to go with it. A sub 4 ERA would put the SP in the to 10 of Baseball (Top 4 in AL).
  4. Walters will get DL to make room for Oliveros. They will inform Hendricks after tonight's game (if it gets played) that he will be recalled to start Saturday or Sunday (depending on the status of tonight's game). They will want the extra bat on the bench when we go to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati next week so Parmelee won't be sent down. They will probably send Oliveros back down after Friday's game as the bullpen will be sufficiently rested again. With the off days the next 2 Mondays we only need an extra starter for next Saturday and the DH the following Saturday (I believe with the new CBA you can expand the roster for a DH). I would give Manship the start next Saturday and wait and see for the DH.
  5. The 1st move will be Walters to the DL. When the recall Hendricks to pitch Saturday (or Sunday when tonight's game gets rained out) the won't send down Manship as he probably will be starting next Saturday. They will probably send Oliveras back down after Friday's game.
  6. The Twins won't spend twice that (on an annual basis) to any FA pitcher.
  7. The Twins will NOT go back to 13 pitchers at least until after their NL Road Trip (hopefully they never go back to 13). While Pavano is eligible to come off of the DL on Sunday, he won't be ready to come back at that time.
  8. Liriano doesn't have any arbitration years left, he will be a full fledged FA at the end of the season. With the way Nishioka is playing in AAA this year, my guess is that he will be released at the end of the season. Blackburn's issues may be attributed to loss of stamina. He was on the DL for 2 weeks and in his 2 rehab starts he went less than 3 innings each. In his 2 starts since coming back he has breezed through the 1st 3 innings, hit a wall in the 4th and battled through the 5th.
  9. Because you can't field grounders @ 2B during BP.
  10. Barring a setback, Gibson will be on the opening day roster. He has already begun throwing and will be pitching in games before the end of the season.
  11. Unless Slama is added to the 40-man this year (which may happen) he will leave after this season. He can become a minor league FA after this season and I think that he will leave to go to a team that will actually give him an opportunity to pitch in the majors.
  12. Most players sign 1 year contracts through their arbitration years. While Burton did sign a 1 year contract he doesn't have enough seniority to become a FA. Let's give another example. Alexi Casilla signed a 1 year contract for this year but he will not be a free agent at the end of the season (unless he is non-tendered) as he has 1 year of arbitration remaining.
  13. First, the Twins will never sign a pitcher to a 5+ year deal. The injury risk is too great and they can't afford that much dead money. Second, they will sign at most 1 FA starting pitcher with Diamond, Walters, Blackburn, Hedricks, Gibson and possibly Baker competing for the other 4 spots.
  14. Until Mauer is ready to return I expect Parmelee to DH when Doumit catches, where they play him otherwise I have no idea.
  15. With the offday today and Monday, the Twins won't need a 5th starter until the 16th. Liriano will pitch Sunday and Friday on the normal 4 days rest. I believe that Pavano is eligible to come off of the DL on the 17 so they will need a starter for the 16th. But I believe that Pavano will need to go on a rehab assignment prior to returning as his treatment includes no throwing at all.
  16. I'm guessing Slama is gone after this year unless he is promoted to the Twins. I believe that he can become a 6-year minor league free agent after this season and will elect to do so and who can blame him.
  17. Or maybe he is as polished as Mauer and is starting in 2015.
  18. As PMKI stated, Baseball is the one sport where you don't draft for need. You take the best player available as it will be 2-6 years before they reach the big club.
  19. From what I understand both the Reds and Indians had interest in Willingham and he chose to sign with the Twins.
  20. The owner's goal is to make money, for everybody else in the organization it is to win championships.
  21. I believe Swarzak is scheduled to replace Liriano, of course that could change depending on how deep Liriano goes, but considering he is at 55 pitches after 3 innings he will be out in the 5th inning.
  22. Not only that but Komatsu is a rule 5 pick this winter so if he clears waivers he has to be offered back to the nationals (for $25k) or we would have to work out a trade in order to keep him.
  23. I thought that would be the case but wasn't sure so I left it out. Thanks for the added info.
  24. On the transactions page is says "optioned" to Rochester on 5/16 and there are no other transactions for Parmelee since. If he was dropped from the 40-man it would say "outrighted" to Rochester instead of optioned as it does for Maloney.
  25. The key to success as a pitcher is NOT velocity. The key is keeping the hitter off balance. If you have movement on your pitches and can hit your spots and have the hitter guessing wrong as to what pitch is coming then you can have success. One of Swarzak's starts earlier this year, he breezed through the batting order the 1st time through. Then the batter's discovered that he was throwing a 1st pitch fastball every time and they started swing at the 1st pitch and got several hits and runs before Swarzak adjusted. Very few pitchers can survive when the batter knows what pitch is coming.
