  1. I guess I don't see the grievance on getting younger. At this stage, that's probably the right answer, even if it doesn't help in 2016. I think my bigger problem was not getting better where the needs were obvious. You're absolutely right about the pen. It wasn't addressed. It should have been. I get that O'day was expensive, but honestly, trading Milone this offseason (and I have to think they could have gotten something for him) would have offset most of the cost right there. Now you have an open spot for a younger guy who will also likely have been a better guy. That was my plan btw, so I can say this with hindsight. Same went with Buxton. Sweeney was a good idea. But he never got a chance. A 1 year stop gap would have been a good idea. That wasn't considered. We might have gotten a bit older there, but handing the job to Buxton when it was obvious both last year and in ST this year that he wasn't ready was the wrong answer. I'm not sure my plan would have made us a contender... or for that matter, most realistic plans, but I do agree with point 5 more than anything else. It looks like someone somewhere completely missed the boat.
  2. I don't by the initial struggles idea... not yet at least. He didn't struggle at all in 2013, when he destroyed A ball at 2 levels. He did struggle a bit in 2012, which certainly is understandable as his first taste in pro ball as well as 2014 (injury) and 2015(after missing nearly all of 2014). Aaron Hicks I think fits that idea of early struggles a bit better. Buxton's problem, as I see it right now, is that he just isn't ready. Given his age and the number of minor league at bats, it is hardly an issue at this point.
  3. I've got to think Shaggy is going to be up sooner than later given the cluster that is the Twins pen. I don't see May moving out of it though. That weakens it. Even though I wholeheartedly agree that May shouldn't have been there in the first place, but that's a problem that should have been solved last December.
  4. Dear Twins, I'd like to offer my services to pitch in the closer role for the time being. I'll be more than happy to take the league minimum, and I'm pretty certain I'll blow my first seven saves too. Maybe I'll get lucky and only give up a few warning track fly balls in an outing. Sincerely, Diehardtwinsfan
  5. Pretty much this. They should give him every chance they can to start. If he keeps putting up those numbers in Rochester, he's going to force the issue, and I would add that as bad as the Twins have been this season, you'll likely see some trades opening up spots for guys like Meyer, Berrios, Duffey, and May at some point. Send him to the pen when he fails as a starter, but given how well he's been thus far, you keep throwing him out every 5 days. The mis-management in my opinion is not Meyer's start. It certainly wasn't ideal, but hardly unusual as there are a lot of circumstances outside of the team's control. The mis-management was coveting those mediocre pieces that are nothing more than depth (i.e. Tommy Milone, who should have been shipped away this offseason for anything) in conjunction with not using the money saved from sending Milone away to bolster the pen. With Duffey and Berrios in AAA, lesser options who performed well in Rogers and Dean in AAA, and May's success as a starter, shipping off one asset (even if the return was going to be little) was hardly unreasonable.... and that's before Meyer's resurgence. Sure, there would be some musical chairs in the 5th starter spot, but again that is hardly unusual and with the talent they have in AAA, a wise thing to do. Hopefully, the Twins learn from this mistake and send Rickey (assuming he continues to pitch well) and Tommy away. They won't get much, if we're lucky a C prospect, but they will open up needed spots for some of the young guys with little left to prove in AAA.
  6. I'm more worried right now about what the Dr. said after the game As for errors, they can be a function of extended range too. That was a big knock on Jose Reyes when he came up. He was getting to balls no one could get to and trying to make plays he had no business making. Not sure if that's Gordon's issue or not... then again, given his age, he doesn't have the repetition that a lot of guys have either... could just be that he's young. I won't worry about that too much. If the scouts like his defense, I'm fine with it. I'm rather excited about the .790 OPS he has to date in a pitchers league.
  7. Hopefully.. He had a few decent games in late April too. Personally, however, I think the Twins need to leave him in AAA for a good chunk (if not all of) this season. I want him ready in 2017, and he clearly had a ways to go.
  8. I still want him starting, and I hold out hope for that at some point, but yeah, he's got an open path to closer right now with Perkins hurt and Jepsen sucking at it. I think a little RP experience is always good for a starter, but I really don't think we should take a guy who is likely one of our 5 best starters and stash him in the pen. That said, does someone want to give Tonkin a hat tip? Maybe I'm jinxing him, but he's done pretty well in his albeit limited role.
  9. Buck needs more minor league seasoning. Period. I think we forget that he basically lost all of 2014 due to injury as well. And yeah, comparing him to Trout certainly does no one any favors. I'd let him spend the rest of this season in the minors (unless he forces it) and simply learn to hit advanced pitching. From the looks of it, he's got plenty to learn there. I also wouldn't hand him the 2017 job like we handed it to him this year as well.
  10. If Nolasco was untradeable in March, he's still untradeable now. Perhaps by July if he's continued to pitch well we can ship him off to an NL team, but it's going to take more than a month of decent (except for 1 start) results to unload Ricky.
  11. Seriously people????? No one in the front office wants Meyer, Duffey or even Berrios to fail. Meyer got called up b/c he was the best option available to go long term if he was needed after a 16 inning game, and after another bad Milone outing and a couple of injuries, he got the option to start. That's all it is. Is this an ideal circumstance? No, but callups rarely are. That's the nature of having guys that go once every 5 days and having guys in AAA who still have lessons to learn. Lets sit back and root for the Twins instead looking to blame someone every time something bad happens. I guarantee you that Molitor and Ryan both want Meyer to do well, as does everyone else in the Twins organization.
  12. first full time job was a paper route as well. That was a pretty good gig and with tips I was routinely over $10 an hour when minimum wage was half that.
  13. I'd think he'd need to shoot up the chain a bit before he has any real value, though I'm not sure I'd toss him in as a sweetener (unless of course the coaches simply think he won't make it)... But he's doing everything you want a college guy to do to the low minors. If he's raking in AA next year, then perhaps he is worth trading, though not needing to be on the 40 man for another two years, they can take the time figuring it out.
  14. It's what, four starts in? I don't think a bit more patience just yet is unwise. I have no problems if they promote them, but we are definitely in hot month/SSS territory still, and a few more starts in A+ won't hurt either of them. Same with Eades. I have no issues giving him a few more starts to turn it around.
  15. Seems as though that partnership has been fairly heavily relied on here at Twins Daily.
  16. I like the hot start, but no way would I be calling up Turner any time soon. He's never hit well, and this is a SSS nightmare waiting to happen. I'd probably call Garver up ahead of him, though truthfully, I'm perfectly fine letting each of them play out in AA for now with perhaps a promotion for one or both to AAA sometime later this year.
  17. I'm not sure planning better is the issue here, with the one exception of why Murphy wasn't added to the 40 man when Hicks was removed. Beyond that though, the 40 man roster exists for these reasons. It allows for callus when injury happens and those callus will come. What I suspect presently is that none of the guys Seth listed will be added. They will stay at 39 for now with the idea of perhaps stealing a waiver claim on someone at some point... who knows. I think if they need another hitter, I'd start looking at guys on the 40 man who can be called up for a cup of coffee. ABW might be a candidate here. Travis Harrison (who I believe is on the 40) would be another one. If they add a guy, I'll submit a wildcard name: Levi Michael. If they want a 3rd catcher, Centeno might be that guy.
  18. So he's going to Rochester and they are calling up Pat Dean?
  19. The worst part about Walsh is that I told my wife he'd miss it a minute before the kick. But alas, 1998, 2001, 2009, Herschell Walker, Brad Childress, and the Blair Walsh project... Just get kind of used to it.
  20. Sadly, I still think the Vikings do a better job making their fans cry.
  21. hmm... no game of the thrones... milone pitching well enough to keep Meyer in the pen. Sounds like Master of Orion is calling.
  22. If you get those, it means your team is so bad that WAR is broken.
