  1. I'm curious to see the figures. If it's less than half (or around half) of what Blanton signed for... I can take it.
  2. Bingo! If there's a team that has starting pitching depth that might look to make a deal to save money, it's the Royals... and the price increases (or it should) when trading within the division... so realistically, the Twins are left in the cold here too (twice!). And honestly, the Twins are looking for stopgap-type guys to bridge the gap to the young'ns... take a fliar on a younger-ish guy coming off a down year (Jurrjens/Lannan) or a guy looking to pitch in a different role (Villanueva or Myers - if you're ok with an older guy), just to see if he could help out in a couple years when the team is looking to compete. If the Dodgers were looking to give Capuano away, great... but I think they'd be more willing to give TR a couple million just to hang up. (Cause it's obvious "millions" isn't a big deal to them.)
  3. The Draft Picks that were in Beloit from this year were: Bax Taylor Rogers Melotakis Zach Jones Bax and Rogers will likely start in Cedar Rapids to start, while Melotakis and Jones should start in the Fort. Mason and Zach both sit around 96-99 and seem to have closing potential. One of the Dodgers scouts in Beloit said that if Jones was in the Dodgers system, that he would be moving very fast up to the majors. I think the Dodgers scout said 'We'd be moving him for a guy in the majors.' Cause that's what they do now.
  4. I don't think you got an answer on Tom Boleska, the guy taken in the AAA portion. The Twins purchsed him from the Fargo indy league team about a month ago. My belief at the time was that he'd close for NB with a chance to move up to Rochester at some point. Really surprised he wasn't on AAA reserve list. The point I continue to bring up is that teams shouldn't officially sign these guys til after the Winter Meetings. The Twins lost Dickey the same way a few years back.
  5. To be completely honest, I've been bearish on how the Twins rank MLB-wise... and right now I'd put them in the Top 5. The part that makes it even crazier is that we're not looking at a lot of potential graduations this year. Gibson will be off for sure and now possibly Hicks. You have to hope that some of the 2011 relievers improve their stock as starters (or fast-track relievers) and throw in the #4 pick in the draft (Appel? Manaea?) and we're talking, potentially, the best farm system in the league heading into 2014. I know it's a long way off, but still... wow.
  6. Lots of big things today: Vance Worley becomes the senior member of the starting rotation. Just a guess, but he'll probably make about $600K this year. Trevor May was added to the 40-man in November, so he has all three options remaining. Jared Burton signed an extension. I had him pegged for $2m this year, so I added $50K to the 2013 team salary. (It's an underestimation - because not all contract renewals will be for the $490K minimum - but if the 16 empty spots are all filled with minimum salaries, the team is only committed to $71,130,000.) I also added Ryan Pressly, Mark Sobolewski and Jason Lane.
  7. I guess the "value of Ben Revere" question can be put to rest...
  8. http:// http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2012/#list=rule5 This is a good list.
  9. Arcia had an elbow injury that prevented him from fielding in Beloit. He went to Fort Myers to rehab and ended up just staying there. He essentially skipped low-A altogether (81 PAs), Hicks spent two full years there. I'm not suggesting anything... just pointing that out.
  10. That Salcedo wasn't protected makes me a little nervous. I hope he's not taken; but if he is, I hope the Twins accept him back when it comes to that. I don't think Slama is in danger of going anywhere, teams have had the opportunity to have him for free and have passed. Why pay something to get him now? Though it's impossible to know who's on the minor league reserve list, here are some guys that might get attention if they're available in the minor-league portion: Bobby Lanigan, P, pitched decently towards the back of Rochester's bullpen. I would assume he's on the AAA reserve list since he played there. Andrew Albers, P, thought he'd get some consideration last year, has pitched well the last two years in AA. Angel Morales, OF, how long can a guy stick around because of potential? It might be time for a change of scenery... and if he's not protected on either reserve list, he might finally get it. Tom Stuifbergen, P, Stuif was starting to put it together in 2010 and 11, but came to camp with nagging injuries. Another guy that - if exposed in the minor league portions - may be lost.
  11. I read that as well. There's a reason he's not a GM anymore. I read some other stuff previously and connected Morneau to the Orioles (for any one of there group of young, major league-ready pitchers). He could have connected those dots pretty easily too, but didn't. Would you do it? Morneau and $7m for Matusz (Super-2, four years of team control). Would the Orioles need more cash?
  12. Is it fair to say that Ben Revere's natural progression equivalent is Juan Pierre? They seem like similar players.
  13. Um, I believe it was the opposite. I think they finally moved him to leadoff with Herrmann second and Arcia third after Arcia's promotion. I believe New Britain moved Hicks around 3-5 up until then and he was ok, but much better batting leadoff. That very well may be true... like I said, I couldn't find splits and didn't feel like going through every boxscore. I know he bounced around the lineup in New Britain. He definitely batted leadoff for the Snappers the two years I watched him play in Beloit.
  14. I'd be really curious to see if someone could find Hicks' batting splits from different parts of the order. It really seemed to me that he struggled early in the season batting leadoff and strived when he was finally moved down in the order, the further the better. Ok, so I guess there's another thing to consider: Is Revere only a 4th outfielder? Is Hicks a future leadoff hitter?
  15. I can see both sides of the argument. The part that would force me to consider it: Ben Revere is going to go through arbitration four times. He is similar to Michael Bourn (great D, no power, OBP not where you want for a leadoff guy) and Bourn got almost $15.7m in three arbitration years. Going year to year with Revere is going to be more expensive than buying out those years. I think his D and speed would be valuable enough and worth getting cost certainty. For those that think he's a 4th outfielder, obviously it wouldn't be wise. The other thing to think about: Hicks is looking more like a guy that would bat 6th than 1st. Buxton is a middle-of-the-order bat or not worth the bonus he signed and far enough away that Revere and Buxton will probably never play together.
  16. I bought a jacket that was originally $100 (for $50) and a shirt for my wife. I do collect stuff, mostly SGAs and autographs. The game-used stuff was more than I cared to spend. For example, a ball that Esmerling Vasquez pitched in the dirt to A-Roid was selling for $30. I don't know if you made it to the "Metrodome Garage Sale", but this was similar to that... only with a lot less stuff. One item that I picked up twice but didn't buy: A framed Baseball America with coverboy/top prospect Todd Walker.
  17. Brock, were you for or against extending Span at the time it happened?
  18. I'm pretty sure it was digital only... so it would have shown up in your inbox the day it was released... or if it was already released, the moment you ordered it. I could be wrong though. If I were you, I'd message John.
  19. It was pretty neat. Season ticket holders had early access (10-noon). We got their early and were able to check out the construction in right field (they are replacing the bleachers with an area that will be similar to the Roof Deck). The sale took place in the visiting clubhouse and there was a lot of stuff. Game-used balls, bats, decorative stuff from around the stadium. There was a bunch of jerseys (I saw an Arcia #80 - I think it was - go off the rack). Lots of Danny Valencia jerseys. When I walked out of there around 10:30 there were probably 75 people in the clubhouse, 30 in line to check out and between 150-200 people (maybe more) in line. On another note, I dropped my father-in-law off at the airport on the way there and was right behind Bill Smith being dropped off by his daughter (it took me a second to notice him, she wasn't bad looking...). I told my father-in-law to remind him that there aren't many pitchers on the roster.
  20. Butera wont be sent to AAA as they are already full on their AAA roster Arbitration is a tricky thing MN will have nothing to do with the decision. They are forced to pay 800K to a player who wont play but make Gardy feel more secure. Matt Swartz, who is pretty accurate in his arbitration projects, has Butera getting 500K via arbitration. (I have slotted in at $515,000 here.) If, in actuality, the Twins do end up paying him 800K, then yeah, big mistake.
  21. Updated to include all moves through Deolis Guerra. Was waiting for Butera confirmation one way or the other, but non-tendering Butera would have been big enough to call a presser... and there isn't going to be one at this time of night. What are the chances I find Drew Butera in a 50% bin tomorrow at Target Field?
  22. Staying off the list was Alexi Casilla, who agreed to a $1.7m deal with a $3m option for next year ($200K b/o).
  23. I think the Twins see enough value in Butera's defense and ability to work with their pitchers to keep him around. Butera has options left, so if the Twins and him could agree on a split-contract both parties should be happy. He is guaranteed some money, the Twins are guaranteed having him back. The catching depth in the minors - from top to bottom - and that shouldn't be forgotten, even with five catchers on the 40-man. Quick, of those five catchers who's primary position is catcher?
  24. I don't think they're waiting to pull the plug... I think they're trying to avoid arbitration. Having Butera allows Mauer, Doumit and Herrmann (AAA) to play everyday. Not having him means that Herrmann rides the pine or Mauer or Doumit never DHs. Of course, I could be wrong too.
  25. He's a Boras client, so Jurrjens will get every dime out of the deal he signs. I would love for the Twins to take a chance on him, but it won't come cheap.
