  1. I'm pulling for Kyle Gibson... because it would be fun. My gut says Pelfrey.
  2. When Lohse signs, that will essentially move a pick which could cause the Twins picks/cap to change again, but for today... The Braves getting a comp pick and the Indians losing their comp pick only affected the Twins 2nd round pick (from 42nd pick to 43rd). The projected difference in those picks is $31,000, so their pool's anticipated amount is around $8.17m. Round 2, 43 overall - $1,279,720
  3. Perez, as well as Harold Garcia, have been added to the organizational roster. I also have an updated minor league roster, which includes the Dominican players as well. It's just a matter of getting them formatted. Hopefully soon.
  4. Hmmm... I'll have to adjust my draft board when I get home to see what I have. Who's "they", I'd like to compare.
  5. Now that Bourn signed, Cleveland's comp pick goes away and Atlanta gets one at the end, so 42 becomes 43. When Lohse eventually signs, there will be a minimal shuffle again, more than likely. Other than that, Badsmerf hit it on the head.
  6. I believe it's $4.7m to $1.7m, so the Twins should have around $4.4m.
  7. BA does mention that is his little write-up. Said he carried a one-hitter into the 6th inning and calls him "one of the best prospect to come from Austraila in years". Sounds promising.
  8. TRs quote was something like, "we spent our whole allotment... three point two million, I suspect." The way he worded it was interesting. I think three or four of those guys were included in the prospect handbook. Pools will vary next year and the Twins will have the fourth largest pool. Portions of the pool are tradable as well.
  9. You are correct. So either TR misspoke about what they spent, or they will face a penalty.
  10. BA is doing their International Signings review for 2012 and they posted the Twins today. It's for subscibers only, but I'll list for you the guys they talk about: Amaurys Minier, SS, $1.4m, Dominican Republic Lewis Thorpe, LP, $500,000, Austraila Chih-Wei Hu, P, $220,000, Taiwan Rainis Silva, C, $175,000, Venezuela Johan Quezada, P, $150,000, Dominican Republic Antonio Tovar, OF, $100,000, Venezuela Jorge Parra, LF, $45,000, Venezuela There are others who signed that got smaller bonuses and aren't featured. Terry Ryan said earlier this week they spent the whole alotment, but later said $3.2m (cap was $3.9m). Regardless they were active. Pesonally, I'm happy they appeared to be more active in Venezuela, where they have had some recent success with both Ramos and Arcia. Lewis Thorpe, and possibly Minier, may make it stateside this year. Hu potentially too. The rest will more than likely spend their summers in the DSL.
  11. The example that Sean used about TR helping was that he'd help take the tags off the board when guys are selected. So we're talking minimal involvement. The draft is a big deal and GMs are interested, he said its likely the same in every baseball city in America. The draft room is across from St. Peter's office and near Ryan's so a lot of guys will drop in, though the decisions are in the hands of few.
  12. I really think the Twins - and many other teams - will use the approach the Astros used last year. They will have a specific amount that they are willing to spend and shop it to advisers. If they can't get an assurance that the player will sign for X amount of dollars, they'll take someone they know that will. In the past, if you don't sign a pick, you get a comp pick the next year and really that's all. Now, you get the comp pick, but you lose the money in the spending pool which you're seeing is becoming a very, very big deal. It's too big of a risk to not be able to sign a guy. The Twins pick will be worth $4.5m. They will be able to spend about $4.7m on that pick w/o penalty (independent of the other picks). If its the day of the draft, I get Boras on the phone and say, "Scott, we like Appel and we're willing to go up to $4.7m for him. If we don't have a verbal agreement by the time we hang up the phone, we'll look elsewhere." I'd also do that with a half-dozen other guys, adjusting the offer, of course.
  13. If my memory serves me, Trout's senior year was limited by a lot of rain and guys had a hard time seeing him play. The scout that signed him had a connection to Trout's dad, so he was on him more than others. Trout would have been a guy that Twins would have been high on - toolsy, but that was also the year Gibson fell into the Twins laps. It's hard to blame them when they got a guy that was considered a top-5 talent just weeks before the draft.
  14. I think they top names on the board will be college pitchers. I don't know who the top guy on the board will be when they draft. If they picked 1-1, yeah, I'm pretty sure it would be a pitcher.
  15. I wouldn't doubt that at all.
  16. It goes without saying, but ties are broken - at least on the West Coast - by the players WAR in the Area Code Games. Of course, you have to normalize this number based on both the years since the player hit puberty and the humidity level. It's a stat only the Twins use called WTF+.
  17. In response to thrylos, I talked to Sean to address your "gem". Long story short, the draft is a big deal and the guys on top are going to be there. They are not making the call on picks, they employ people to do that. They aren't out scouting, so they're not going to step on toes. Scouts are on the road all year, spending the other 364 days thinking about "Draft Day", the guys on top are going to let them make decisions on the guys they've spent all year watching. Simple as that. So regardless of who the GM was at that particular time, he wasn't calling the shots in the draft room, but he was present...
  18. ...DFA'd by the Cubs. Campana (LH) was the only player in the MLB that had more SBs per AB than Mastroianni. Could he be someone the Twins add to platoon with Mastro (RH)? At least until Hicks is ready...
  19. Thanks guys. It was a lot of fun and, at least in my mind, something different, yet interesting. Probably - ok, DEFINITELY - one of the least glamorous jobs in all in off sports, yet the future of every franchise depends entirely on it.
  20. EDIT: While I can be snarky, I'm not going to be... Yes, I have seen him play. I don't know if Crawford will stick at SS or not. I'm simply trying to present the facts: Not everyone is convinced the he can stick at SS.
  21. It's been an ongoing discussion on the message boards since the end of last season. You can see my projections here.
  22. Personally, I think he'll be given every chance to stay at SS by the team that drafts him. That's my opinion. Between different sites and different conversations, people are still questioning it. When there are questions already - only 4 projected SS came were prep draftees - it's a legitimate question. I disagree. Perfect Game and Baseball America don't even share the Top 5 prospects. PG has Meadows #3 in his high school class and Baseball America has him #3 overall, as an example.
  23. Some teams already have Crawford on their board as an OF. If the Twins share that belief, he won't go #4. If he can convince a team - any team - that he can stick at SS, then we're having a different discussion. He'll have an interesting spring, to be sure
  24. Amen. I brought my dad and in true man fashion, we avoided looking at each other the whole time. A very memorable service.
