  1. I appreciate the fact that there are only so many ways to say something! But in the May paragraph you used the word "depth" to describe the excess amount of 3,4, and 5 level pitchers on the roster. To me that is not depth, it's just too many long term, expensive to resolve contracts given to suspect veteran pitchers! . Now I agree depth is less wordy, but it extends the connotation of quality! In reality, continually adding these types of pitchers, is akin to attempting to dig yourself out of a hole with a shovel.
  2. I did not see the news article, was anything said that he is to be a starter? I am assuming, since he likely would not sign as a reliever, which is his niche!
  3. Maybe he will teach them Pitch To Contact!
  4. I looked in the Webster, and found "He's better than Stauffer" in the section entitled Backhanded Insults!
  5. Very well put! We cannot put mediocre players on the field, and expect a contending result!
  6. This is a quote from Molitor in this morning Trib: (Can) a large man (260-plus pounds) with zero experience handle a new position? Coach Butch Davis worked with him in the outfield occasionally last season, Molitor said, “to help him get comfortable reading balls, taking angles. It’s a really small foundation that he has, but if the guy is as athletic as we think he is, you hope he can catch the routine fly ball". So expectations have been set, the bar is high! The only problem with this theory, is that I watched a baseball game once, where someone hit an "unroutine" fly ball!
  7. There was no market. Once the Twins won the bid,it's a take it or leave it. He had to take it. He is almost 30, and he gets a shot at MLB. I would have done the same thing in a heartbeat. Parks decision was correct, based on the options he had.
  8. I don't always agree with"The Baggy", but on the issue of players like Fien I do. And while he might have used the term "cheaper" in his original missive, the tenor of the piece was that it is time for the Twins to remove some of the middling names on the end of the roster, and try to get better, Fien, and likely Nunez are not going to get better, Fien is probably going to get worse. This is a team with options, it's not berift of young talent.
  9. It's been my long time complaint, the safe, known mediocre is the better than the high upside, youthful unknown. Maybe it's just me, but if I know the player in question is not going to help take me to the next level, then I look at someone who could. Will he? I don't know! But I do know the other one won't! That's how you get better. Yes it's possible to get worse, but that's part of being in charge. Almost anyone can be average!
  10. That's what's odd here. If they don't trade Plouffe now, there doesn't seem to be a time when they will. That leaves one of those three on the bench, traded, or in Rochester. And means Arcia and likely Vargas is gone. It also means our biggest trade chip for pitching is off the table.
  11. So if Souhan was so sure since last summer, that Plouffe was not going to be traded, he had to get that vibe from someone in management that knew. Which begs this question! If the Twins knew they intended to keep Plouffe, and they were very clear that Sano was not going to DH, why has Sano never had an inning in the OF! Souhan could be tooting his own horn, but it is beginning to appear that Plouffe was never on the table. Which still begs the above question. This is an odd orginisation! Btw, I know this was Souhans perception of Molitors opening day lineup, which is unofficial. But if Plouffe is your 4 hitter, then this isn't really a big change from last year!
  12. Could you be more specific?
  13. The more I see, the more I read, the more I have come to the conclusion that the Twins are an insular, inbred orginisation with the same management, now going into its 21st year. Twenty years of mediocrity, hope, frustration and disappointment! UGH
  14. This has been Ryan's style for years. Some players seem untouchable, some readily expendable. Often times talent is not the issue, personal relationships are.
  15. I think the definitive pronunciation will be provided by Bert!
  16. I talked to a friend of mine today, former college BB player, longtime amateur baseball pitcher and superb hitter, goes to Twins Fantasy Camps, etc! I asked him how many HR's for Park? His completely nonsensical answer! "I will be happy if he doesn't spend most of the year in AAA, he comes from an 88 mph league, to a mid 90's league, with cutters" My expectations are closer to that view, than 30 HR's this year.
  17. Nothing gets resolved until Plouffe does! If Plouffe stays, Kepler might as well sign a long term lease in Rochester. If they trade Plouffe for a CF place holder, then he can have Buxton co-sign it. It would be far more likely that TR would go to Great Clips, than Kepler be a fourth OF. Nacht! I fear that April and May will be extended spring training. Whether it be Sano at 3B or RF, Buxton or a fill in CF, and Park learning the intricacies of a 96 mph FB. Fortunately those games do not count in the final standings, as we have so often saw. That and several of our young BP arms staying in MiLB will be the price we pay for our ersatz run at that ever elusive WC spot?
  18. The money was reasonable, besides its Carl's money, he had plenty. Mr Park will never have to work after BB if he doesn't want to. But when one side faces a take it or leave it, and the other side is only out a few bucks in lawyer and accounting fees, that's not a negotiation. As to Parks talent, I don't know. The numbers are great, but so is the history that the Twins never ever outbid, or out pay everyone else in baseball for a player. Their normally not even on the legitimate fringes. Even with Sano, there were age verification factors that drove other teams away, kudos to Bill Smith for sticking with it, but it wasn't a pure matter of outbidding the rest of MLB. As to Plouffe, if they don't trade him, Sano has to play RF. UGH!
  19. IF you are going to put Buxton in AAA, then Santana is the logical choice for a fill in. He is not as good a hitter as he was in 2014" nor as bad as 2015. He would probably get you by. And if you put Rosario in CF? That would leave Arcia and Sano with him. Since putting Santana in CF means Buxton is in AAA, don't even bring up Kepler. This could go down as one of the greatest off seasons in the history of MLB for amateur GM, arm chair experts, newspaper columnists, psychiatrists, and hair replacement salons. The decisions Ryan makes in the next months will make or break the franchise for the next 5-6 years.
  20. Your math is excellent! Now do the math for # 260 lbs. hitting a fence or landing on a shoulder! :). Actually (hopefully) your sarcasm is noted!
  21. A Plouffe trade for a replacement level OF'er? J/K........ I would just stick him out there, and let him play. He has always struggled with the bat at the beginning of any new level. But, for better or for worse, I ain't the GM. I still think he ends up in Rochester. As an aside, assuming Park is coming to sign, another shoe has to drop. A roster with Park, Sano, Plouffe, and Mauer on it just doesn't make sense!
  22. It took 4 FOUR YEARS of losing 90 games to bring in a fresh face! FOUR YEARS! Two years to straighten out CF. One year with a SS out there, and the rest of the time a series of 4th OF. And if I remember right, it was an injury that forced him to retrieve Hicks from Rochester the last time. Jepsen himself was an upgrade, but that BP is a long way from being a plus part of the team. We had two Hughes pitching for us, one in '14 and one in '15, which seems to be standard for the "Hughes Boys". As for E. Santana, one could almost say he had the same effect on the Twins in the first half of the year, as the last. Finally Hunter. while there may be some validity to the pros of his clubhouse presence, I think they should be balanced against the lost playing time that other younger outfielders got. I am waiting for the first time someone mentions "it's going to take Billy Bob awhile to get acclimated to ML pitching!
  23. Followed by the announcement that Trevor Plouffe has been traded to the ????? for ????? And a PTBNL! Either that, or this is gonna be one of the more interesting 25 man rosters in baseball next year!
  24. or why not a Danny V homecoming. :).
  25. Not sure if there is a one size fits all here. I like power as much as the next guy. But if your pitching staff is fly ball PTC oriented, you better have someone in the OF to run down those bombs. Plus your park configuration is in play also. Good baseball teams are balanced, you can't construct them willy nilly. I realize this is easier said than done, but it's part of a winning equation.
