  1. I don't mind the idea of trading Dozier but the return has to be great. It looks like he's a legit starting second baseman and under team control for 4 years. That's tough to trade unless the other side is giving up something big.
  2. He's certainly one of the nice potential break out guys this year. KLaw had said he's got the tools but needed lots and lots of at-bats but this is a really nice start.
  3. Part of the problem is you are comparing some weekday home games the last two years to the 2011 season which were friday-sunday night games. I have no doubt that attendance this year will be lower than last year - until Buxton comes up at least - but it's not a huge deal for us anyways until/unless the payroll is affected and there is no indication that it will be.
  4. Man, last year it was like everything went right for our prospects. This year is not so nice. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/04/10/mlbs-best-prospect-byron-buxton-wont-play-before-may/ Buxton won't be back until May. Twins won't push him, which is a good thing, but it is depressing.
  5. https://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=23277 Scout review of Aiken (and others) "We are targeting a college pitcher with our first round pick, but Aiken would have been one of the exceptions for us. Now that he can hit a 7 (97 MPH) on the gun, there's just no chance he falls to us. Honestly, I'm not sure how he falls out of the top few picks now. What isn't there to like? You didn't need a radar gun to fall in love with him before, but now he's the complete package."
  6. So, the Fischer thing could be helpful to the Twins in a couple ways. 1) Maybe he falls to us! 2) Maybe Miami, being cheap and having 4 picks in the top 40 or so, goes underslot at 2 (say local arm Toussaint) to save money for overslot guys like Fisher, leaving one more high end guy for us at #5.
  7. I agree but I think that explains the *why* of why fans see him as a lightening rod.
  8. And this is probably a pretty clear line that divides the camps. No one wants Mauer to make outs so that's a strawman argument. No one is asking that he chase pitches he can't hit. But people are complaining that he's taking hittable pitches in situations where the team desperately needs a big hit. And that can be exasperating to watch. Yesterday was just another example of it. That doesn't mean that people don't recognize Mauer's talent it is just they find something about him incredibly off-putting.
  9. I think this thread is getting a bit off topic so, with that in mind, I'll add to it. I believe I read an article that said, at the extreme end, a great hitter will be better than a great pitcher but, until you reach the extremes it doesn't really matter, value is value. But the other point was that it was easier for the great hitter to be consistently good over several seasons. Look at Verlander/Cabrera. Most would agree both are at the top of their positions and, over the last 5 years, Cabrera has about a 7 WAR advantage. Pitching can be fickle.
  10. He didn't cite it as a "detriment." He cited it as one of the most famous plays Mauer has had. And he's right. Mauer's signature moment in the playoffs is a blown call that pressured MLB to get instant replay.
  11. Great question. His swing seems like it would be ideal for that park.
  12. Yeah, Oliva's not a horrible comparison in value. Both, over 10 years, had about the same WAR and OPS+. Mauer was probably slightly better, esp with position taken into account, but it's close. And Oliva's career was mismanaged - he should have been in the majors for good before he was 25.
  13. That wasn't what I said either. And also, he isn't one of the 20 best players in baseball. He does a lot of things well including the most important thing - not making outs - but he also does a lot of things that frustrate people. Including, and most especially, not *seemingly* caring about driving in runs when that is more important than having another base runner. That, I believe, is the main reason people get upset with him.
  14. C'mon Brock. Most people haven't been insulting others.
  15. I don't think anyone (at least not me) doesn't accept that he's been the best player from 2009-today. (Santana was the better player from 04-08). But I'm not sure that's the real issue. And I am glad he's a Twin and I hope he goes into the HOF. But he is a frustrating player to watch for several reasons that have been mentioned.
  16. But not the *only* thing in baseball.
  17. This is more surprising that relevant but, according to WAR (with all it's flaws) Mauer has been the best Twins only 4 times and only the 2010 team was really, really good. Depending on the year, quite a few Twins were better than him - Perkins, Baker, Santana, Pavano, Cuddy, Hunter, Radke, Silva, Bartlett ...
  18. Yeah, but again, most of that was a product of his high avg. His iso% are usually below .150. And only one year did he finish top 10 in doubles (2010). He's finished top 10 in singles 3x.
  19. I've seen both get 80s on the scouting scale but scouting guys say Hamilton's speed is really a 90, the scale just doesn't go that high. Buxton is fast but not Hamilton fast.
  20. I mostly agree with you BUT he hasn't finished in the top 10 in WAR since 2010. Now he's moved from catcher to first. At this point he's probably a .312/.400/.436 132 OPS+, 3-4 WAR guy. That's nice but it's not ideal.
  21. This is insane - http://m.mlb.com/video/v31940121/cinstl-hamilton-races-home-on-shallow-sac-fly/?player_id=571740 Scores on a sac fly to basically the second baseman. He stole his first base this season off of Molina - with no throw.
  22. Very likely but that's still the perception of him.
  23. I really don't think anyone resents Mauer because he's too good at baseball. It's because he seems aloof/insulated from reality. He hasn't had a good postseason yet, he doesn't seem overly bothered by the losing. He wants to be Joe Average.
  24. I wonder if that is based on an assumption that a guy like Rodon or Kolek won't be there at #5?
