  1. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10989686/kansas-city-royals-pitchers-yordano-ventura-elbow-kyle-zimmer-back-hurt I wanted the Twins to draft Buxton but if we had to choose between Gausman/Appel/Zimmer, I wanted Zimmer. Shows what I know. Gausman is looking solid in AAA but probably ends up a #2 instead of a true ace, Appel has been sent back to EST and Zimmer's got a pretty cloudy future.
  2. The other way of looking at that would be that Radke would be the third overall pick of the 1991 draft if it was redone, after Manny and Nomar. Incidentally, the eight round of that draft had four players amass more than 20 career WAR.
  3. I think the biggest problem with pro-Nola and anti-Nola groups are how they see him. I like him because I think he can be a legit #2 starter. If Law is right and he is a safe #3 I don't want him at five. But his predicted strike out numbers don't worry me.
  4. Obviously no one wants that (although now that he's injured maybe he never makes the majors). The opposite point is that the FO know more about their players than we do. So it might be a bad trade or it might not, also depending on how the season plays out. KC can still make the playoffs this year. Myers might be Frenchy 2.0.
  5. I believe he has another option year as a small loophole for international signings put on the 40 man before a certain age. I forget the details but it came up when we were having those discussions.
  6. I'd be happy with Kolek, that's for sure. First time I've heard that Rodon might not be a starter. That's scary. Seems like a deep draft but no elite super high end talent.
  7. Playing in today's environment, in hitters park in AL - pitching for 15 years. He avgs 210ip a year, 30 starts, 119 ERA+ and 4 WAR per season. His worst fulltime WAR season was still over 2, his best was over 6. 9 of his 15 seasons he was above 4 WAR and he finished top 10 6x. Over 3000 career innings, 200+ wins a few no-hitters but best cy young finish was only 5th.
  8. KLaw was asked that in a chat question a week ago and he said he wouldn't use fip for minor leaguers.
  9. Man, he's really going to slip. I'd bet he doesn't go in the top 15 at this point.
  10. I hope Pino gets to the majors sometime. Not sure how it works for him but it would be nice to see him get a chance up here, maybe as a long man.
  11. Well, first, Myers isn't the reason they have an imperfect future (to be kind). Hosmer and Moustakas have been pretty bad. Gordon has been up and down. Butler has been solid but not a superstar. Crow is a nice bullpen arm but he should've been more. They had so many prospects but only a handful - Perez has been a nice find behind the plate, Ventura could be an ace - have actually overachieved. They aren't quite as bad as Seattle but something isn't working there.
  12. I think Kepler can be a good player but it's a good reminder that he's going to go really slowly. He's going to need 2000 milb at bats.
  13. Yeah, me neither - unless he falls to #46
  14. Probably nothing good but they don't have to be related, either. Evaluating prospects is incredibly difficult and I'm sure all teams are right some times and horribly wrong other times. If Myers is what he looks like now, esp on defense, the Royals were right to trade him. If not, ... meh, rough trade.
  15. Why would you use two different WAR calculations here? And you picked the one that rated Myers the highest and Shields the lowest. By fWAR, Shields was worth 4.5 last year and 1.6 already this year and b bWAR, Myers was worth 1.9 last year and -0.5 this year. I didn't like the trade but wasn't as against it as you were. I think KC probably knew stuff about Myers that fans didn't and sold high on him. I'm ok with that sort of reasoning but they have to be right. The jury is still out on that part.
  16. But with Delmon, at least in hindsight, you can see the plate discipline problem (same w/Frenchy and many, many others). Moose didn't seem to have that. Just plain can't hit.
  17. KC sent Moustakas to AAA. After his 2010 minor league season - where as a 21 year old he crushed AA/AAA to a line of .322/.369/.630 despite being at least 3 years younger than the league avg - he was ranked the #9 prospect in baseball. He didn't even seem to have too much issues with plate discipline in the minors. And even as a MLer, his k/bb ratios haven't been horrible. But he has been horrible in the bigs.
  18. SI's mock draft is a bit different than most - http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20140522/mlb-mock-draft-2014-carlos-rodon-dave-perkin/?eref=sihp Twins take Beede, Nola falls to #9, Gordon #10 and Gatewood goes #7 to Philly. But he does have Burdi going to Detroit.
  19. I think the Twins are 5-5 in their last 10 games in NY, as weird as that seems.
  20. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/8/7/3226335/defining-1-2-3-4-5-starters That's from minorleague ball defining the terms when scouts talk about it. Baseball prospectus had something pretty similar although I don't have the link for it and Klaw uses similar definitions as well (ie - 60 = 6 = plus). I'd prefer Jackson to fall to us but it's unlikely.
  21. I'm not Berrios' biggest fan either but I do like him. His ceiling is a #3 pitcher (one plus pitch and two more avg pitches). The positives on him are legit though; he seems durable - over 100 innings last year + WBC before hand. He's been really young for his levels. And his makeup, baseball knowledge, work ethic etc are all supposed to be fantastic. Hard not to root for him.
  22. Callis and Mayo at mlbpipeline give him two plus (60) pitches and rank him #5 in the draft. (And plus command, too). That would make him a legit #2 type pitcher if he pans out.
  23. I like Nola a lot. Admittedly, part of the reason is I don't want to wait 5 years for the pick to make it to the majors like Gordon will need. If one of the big 4 doesn't fall to us, then I'd be happy with either Nola or Freeland. But I'm still hoping for a surprise and nabbing Jackson. But we'll draft Gordon.
  24. I assumed the conversation was basically about perceived strike out pitchers and I named a few that weren't - as Brock mentioned in passing. I suppose we could have just gone year by year and picked out the seasons instead but that seemed overkill. And I think most of us reading this thread understood it to be about rating pitchers based on strike out rate and not an actual discussion about strike outs. Good now?
