  1. At the beginning of the year, Jason Parks of BP said that the Twins 11-20 prospects were better than the Angels 1-10.
  2. You just ignore any points others bring up and keep believing in false narratives, like "Gardy isn't good with young guys", "team is stuck in an old boys club" or "Pro Ryan people are religious zealots." Doesn't really leave any room for discussion. I tried to make my point on Ryan - in his time back it seems like he has an idea of what he wants to do and has pursued it without getting distracted (like taking a college pitcher when the BPA was a HS position player). He hasn't done any dumb "save my job" moves and has made a number of good moves designed to build the foundation of the team. I like what he's doing and it makes sense to me.
  3. Atlanta actually is using a pretty solid prospect now - La Stella. The Nats and Orioles could use a second baseman. If the Twin were able to pry Gioltio or Bundy back, I'd be ok with moving Dozier but not for a potential #3 pitcher.
  4. Actually, a contract doesn't need to be signed to be enforceable and Nix may very well have a strong case. And under the CBA, the Astros aren't supposed to be able to say an offer is contingent on another person signing. We'll see how this plays out but it's pretty obvious Nix and Aiken are going to file grievances against the Astros. What is stunning is that the Astros basically did this over 1.5 m dollars. That's insane.
  5. Klaw chat today answered a Berrios question: About a month ago I asked if Berrios was a top 100 prospect and you said no. What has changed since then and now to move him up in your rankings? Obviously, he was promoted to AA in that time period. [h=6]Klaw (2:39 PM) [/h] Changeup. Same concerns on height/fastball, but third pitch has come along rapidly this year.
  6. I think it's pretty clear that the Twins are rebuilding and I think Ryan has made a lot of good moves to that end. We haven't seen him get burned in a trade. We've seen him build up a broken farm system in relatively short time. He hasn't done anything that suggests he's no longer a competent GM. Yeah, the ML team has had some bad records but he hasn't made stupid panic moves that hurt the longterm future. It takes time to rebuild a ML team - the 2011 team was horrible and old and there wasn't much in the minor leagues to help it. There wasn't a quick fix to be made.
  7. Yeah but this just leads to the false narrative that Gardy can't relate to young guys.
  8. And let me clarify that, while I said they could afford him, I did expect that the Dodgers would eat some of that salary.
  9. Man, he has a -2.4 dWAR value in LF? His bat is ok. I don't know. If we traded for him, I think we'd need a better handle on his defensive abilities. That said, isn't he used to dating hollywood types? I don't think he'd want to come to MN anyway. The team has enough payroll room to bring him on and he's young enough (29) where he wouldn't automatically be a albatross in 2018 but if he's a worse defender than Willingham ... no thank you.
  10. They didn't wait on the Super 2 for Hicks so I guess if he "earns" it in ST, he can get it. That said, I'd be stunned if they didn't wait for the Super 2 date to pass.
  11. I think the job is Ryan's until he doesn't want it and I suspect that that means he'll keep Gardy as his manager. If Ryan does retire (and I suppose that's more possible now b/c of his cancer scare) then I think a new GM might change the manager. I've always thought that Dougie Baseball will be Gardy's longterm replacement in a few years so I'll stick to that for now.
  12. I think he's just more of a realist than fans are. I certainly don't read any "changes are going to be made" attitude there. He wants to win but isn't going to let a 5-2 road trip change his thinking about the club. I imagine the Pohlads trust Ryan completely to turn this around and nothing in his comments suggest otherwise, at least to me.
  13. I don't have a subscription but someone already posted taht White Sox' Rodon is a top 10 guy. Cleveland has Lindor and Frazier, both probably top 50, Lindor may be top 10. Not sure if Tigers or Royals (Zimmer?) would have anyone in the top 50.
  14. http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/07/16/331982188/a-huge-new-crater-is-found-in-siberia-and-the-theories-fly?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=20140716
  15. While I agree he isn't done, looking just at stats to evaluate a 23 year old 1-1 pick in high A ball isn't ideal. The scouting reports have been pretty bad, too. Right now, I think Scott Baker career would be a nice return on Appel.
  16. With the caveat that midseason rankings aren't as solid as preseason rankings, it was a big surprise to see Berrios #50. Klaw said in a chat about a month ago that he wasn't a top 100 prospect yet. Must have seen something he liked at the futures game. I don't have any problem with Buxton being #2 to Bryant - Klaw wasn't entirely sure that Buxton shouldn't have been #1 anyway. Let's just hope Buxton finishes the year strong and dominates the AFL. I'm really glad to see a lot of scouting people - Klaw, Sickels, Callis etc - rate Stewart so high.
  17. Klaw tweeted that the Astros should demote him, promote him or rest him but apparently get him out of that park.
  18. Somehow it got worse. He's now 1-5 w/10.80 era in A+ ball. 66 hits in 37 innings. 33 strike outs. The Astros have become an absolute train wreck. I can't look away.
  19. Jeepers, I thought this thread was going to tell us he had another injury. This is much better.
  20. Cards will be scouting Suzuki and Reds may be a good fit for Willingham. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/bowden-on-price-hamels-byrd-angels-as-reds-more.html
  21. Yeah, Wagner #1 but Jeter or Ripken #2. I'd probably put Jeter ahead of Ripken.
  22. Nice story. Hope he has a good life.
  23. According to union and agents, they believe the Astros knew that MRIs will always show "something" in any pitchers arm and are using that against Aiken. Aiken was hitting 97 in his last start and has had no arm injuries in the past. Astros owner is also pretty cheap - makes Pohlads look good so may not have wanted to spend the full pool allotment. Best case scenario for Aiken would be for him to be declared a FA - Astros must make an offer of 40% of slot value but if an arbitrator rules that Astros had been breaking the rules (hard to do), he'd be a FA. Jim Callis guesses he'd get at least 25m.
  24. Astros found an issue with #1 pick Brady Aiken's elbow. Aiken says he feels fine but the Astros have dropped their offer to him from the original 6.5m down to 3.168m, a huge dropoff. They also have already come to terms with another draftee, Jacob Nix, and had agreed to pay him 1.5m more than his slot amount on the assumption that Aiken would sign. However, if Aiken doesn't sign, they would lose his slot bonus and would therefore be over the draft budget and have to forfeit a few draft picks next year. They appear ready to not sign Nix if it comes to that but the players association and his agent may fight them on that. "MLBPA executive director Tony Clark said the players’ association will weigh all options in support of the players. Specifically regarding Nix, he said: “We believe that it is a clear violation of the rules being attempted solely to avoid penalty. The Astros made a deal with Jacob Nix and should honor that agreement.”" http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/07/brady-aiken-has-elbow-issue-astros-seeking-discounted-deal.html I gotta admit, I'm rooting for the kids in this case.
  25. No, maybe next year after the Super 2 cut off. No reason to bring him up now - he's not on the 40 man roster anyway.
