  1. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/01/astros-two-other-teams-in-aggressive-pursuit-of-evan-gattis.html#disqus_thread Well, I guess the Astros aren't worried about strike outs. Wow. Gattis has some real power and should hit 25-30 HR for Houston while playing LF/DH and 1B. He'll probably strike out 120 times. They gave up a couple intriguing prospects - Rio Ruiz, who could be a big sleeper guy and a top 100 prospect next year; Mike Foltywizzcdhdfhd (sp), who has a cannon but struggled. He might end up in the bullpen. And they also threw in Andrew Thurman, a college pitcher drafted in the second round a year ago who might be a #4/5 starter.
  2. I don't think that sways many people - Steamer usually predicts low. In fact, they predicted 6 pitchers to be above 4 WAR and only 3 to pitch 200 innings (unless they haven't issued all players/teams yet. I confess to not caring). Hughes' projection is the 29th best WAR in MLB.
  3. I think the point he's trying to make is that some stats are predictive and some stats tell us what happened. FIP isn't a very good predictive stat although you can argue that the ingredients in FIP are. That's why the changes in those rates might better explain Hughes outside of Yankee stadium. Most of the recent articles on fangraphs go in that general direction - "he's a good pitcher but real changes have made him better, etc, etc". I don't think anyone rationally expects him to be a 6 WAR pitcher again but he shouldn't fall back to the 2 WAR Yankee pitcher either.
  4. Yeah, I think Hughes might have similar value this year although it might look slightly different. Fangraphs has had a number of articles on Hughes as of late. I think most everything can be summed up as "Hughes is a good pitcher" and the rest is semantics. He should throw another 210 innings for us this year and be pretty good.
  5. http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/114285/ohio-state-fan-with-muscular-dystrophy-hoists-buckeyes-title-trophy-on-the-field Ohio State had a fan with muscular dystrophy hang around the team, was on the field for the celebration and held the championship trophy. Must have been a great night for him.
  6. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/54559/the-current-all-underrated-team Dozier is your starting second baseman. Can't really argue with the list, maybe a quibble here or there - I think Dallas Keuchel and Rene Rivera weren't great choices. Keuchel b/c I think he's going to be a journeyman with one career season and Rivera hasn't done much although it's hard to pick catchers at this point.
  7. Blaming religion in all this allows us to ignore the root causes of all these issues - many of which were created to make our lives here better. There are a lot of issues that contribute to these things including insane poverty, homelessness and ****ty living conditions; gun trafficking on a world wide scale; destruction of social systems in many countries to support people; systematic robbery of a country's natural resources to richer countries; tax/business systems that create new serfs; human trafficking; military actions and creations of puppet rulers whose first priority is no the well being of their own people. Blaming religion is a lot like blaming the rape victim for wearing too short a skirt. Makes sense to some but it really moves the discussion to the wrong topic while ignoring the real issues which makes sure it'll happen again.
  8. Kind of cool - a writer for mlb.com put together the longest streak for current players at each position to never make an all star team. http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/106185734/who-joins-john-mcdonald-as-the-longest-tenured-non-all-star-players Couple former Twins on the list and some pretty darn good players. Surprised AJ Burnett never made an all star team. Thought he had.
  9. Thanks, for some reason I was thinking we were in the first supp. My way was more fun.
  10. Don't we have a supp pick?
  11. http://deadspin.com/lions-dominic-raiola-says-he-went-low-because-patriots-1662421758 And when was the last brawl started by a guy stealing second base in the second inning?
  12. Yet you said Pedro things yo mamma jokes are justification for beating up the elderly. None of which is true - Pedro did not beat up Zimmer over a yo mamma joke (he didn't beat up Zimmer at all, the old guy fell trying to attack Pedro). You are (seemingly) trying to imply that one of baseballs most famous fights happened b/c of a yo mamma joke, when it didn't.
  13. We don't need to, Levi is seems to think baseball is the only sport with unwritten rules and a conduct of play policed by the players. Evidence of such things ends his "baseball is the only sport that X happens in" theory. For example, Levi thinks baseball players shouldn't react to bad words (Yo Mamma jokes), yet such things are so common in other sports that the NFL passed rules against it.
  14. Obviously, you and I are reading the same article and watching the same video and seeing two different things. As to blaming baseball, I'm pretty confident that there is more after the whistle altercations in football every week then in baseball every season. Hell, the NFL had to pass a rule specifically b/c the players were using really naughty language. And Suh deliberately stepped on a defenseless players ankle (with both feet).
  15. And we will try to do this another way without leading to another report. Where is your condemnation toward Suh or Munnerlyn for their actions? Or the ND hockey player who flattened a UMD hockey player? In baseball, players are ejected, fined and suspended regularly for their actions in on-field melee's. Yet you keep blaming unwritten rules for this and equated it to criminal actioins while seeming to ignore that this kind of stuff happens in every sport far beyond the boundaries of what is permissible in that sport.
  16. Your post said that "Pedro thinks mom jokes are justification for tossing around the elderly." Nothing in that link suggests anything like that. The brawl wasn't started by a "yo momma" joke and didn't involve Posada or Pedro. Zimmer charged Pedro (20 sec mark) and Pedro merely slapped his hands away and the old guy fell mostly on his own momentum. Perhaps Posada said something negative toward him in those first 20 seconds but that still wouldn't support your theory.
  17. Yeah, I've read it and a lot my links in this thread go to Mr. Turbow's website. It's great. He's done a wonderful job showing how the unwritten rules have evolved over the century plus of baseball. And frankly, I think they add another level of enjoyment to the game.
  18. Maybe, and I don't know anything about him other than stats, but - he's a 6'5" lefty who put up some pretty good numbers at A ball while only 19. Sickels ranked him #13 in the org and wrote that he could leap ahead next year. I like him as the break out pitcher this year.
  19. ? Nothing in that article suggests that elderly jokes are justification for tossing around the elderly. Pedro didn't even start anything, Zimmer basically fell down on his own (20 sec mark), Pedro just pushed his arms off his face. Pedro certainly threw at people on purpose, despite his claims (including Matt Lawton once when Lawton tried to call time out).
  20. This isn't a new side to Ryan, however. He admitted to mistakes when he first started and had no job security. In the horrible 90s, local writers were calling for his head, esp after the Travis Lee fiasco. And Ryan openly stated that the Lee thing was his fault. He also admitted to bungling the relationship with Knoblauch.
  21. IIRC, they had Thorpe at 101 last year so I think 8 is a pretty good guess.
  22. The market pressure thing is overblown but again we can look at Hoyer in Chicago. i suspect Ryan would have done many of the same types of moves and the media hasn't turned on Hoyer yet. Actually, in baseball we've seen a surprising amount of stability in FO, esp in the big markets or with smart teams. Alderson in NY (2010), Hoyer w/Cubs (2011), Kenny Williams w/White Sox (2000-2012 before promotion), Cashman in NY, Anthopoulos in Tor (2009), Zduriencik in Seattle (2008) etc.
  23. It's probably easier to get job security like that when you've 1) won before 2) are well respected within the game and 3) have successfully rebuilt in worse situations. Frankly, right now you should compare him to Lunhow and Hoyer. If you think they deserve more time, then you should think Ryan deserves more time. And if you're going to say "no, he was here under Bill Smith" then ... ugh. And if you're going to say "He left the cupboard bare for Smith" relook at the cupboard first.
  24. Yes, we do tend to forget how tough it is to develop top prospects. Conversely, you also forget how often unknown prospects develop into very good players - Utley, Koskie, AJ, Radke, Santana, Youk .... As to Mauer, yes, he was pretty good behind the plate and the Twins are unlikely to develop another HOF caliber catcher soon. But he hasn't really been that guy for a while. And there isn't a lot in his past to expect that he's going to be better at 35. He's been injury prone and missed a lot of games in his prime. Not sure why anyone should expect him to be better as he gets older.
  25. Mauer wasn't that good last year. While picking the individual who will replace him at first base isn't easy, that doesn't mean that it won't be easy for the team to replace him with someone. We just don't know that person's name yet.
