  1. Yeah, if he's retiring on his terms, great. If he's retiring because of a degenerative hip condition, less great.
  2. I think your general point is probably correct. The Twins and White Sox don't use BA or mlbpipeline's rankings. Their internal rankings will have certain players much higher or lower and probably ranked in tiers. I think a package around Gordon and Romero would have been tempting to the White Sox, depending on what the other two pieces are. But they still might have liked the Cubs package better but we could have thrown in a third prospect, if we wanted. Gordon/Romero and one of Kiriloff or Gonsalves is probably better, right?
  3. I can't find the TD thread but the link was to this article - http://www.startribune.com/sixteen-years-after-no-1-pick-no-regrets-for-twins-or-joe-mauer/426194721/ "Twins’ owner Carl Pohlad felt an obligation, he told his employees, to hold the line against rapid salary inflation, that he owed it to the industry not to be part of what he considered an increasing threat to the game." And if you were paying attention in those dark years, Pohlad was really, really cheap. That's why the Twins drafted Revere and Span because they'd take less than others.
  4. Yeah, the real cost to sports - esp football - can really suck the entertainment of some of this. You see a couple guys crash into each other and it's no longer "oooooo", it's "oh, I hope they don't have brain damage."
  5. I don't know if he'll be fine but the easy answer is we'll get to find out. Just keep throwing him out there and see what happens. I'm sure the coaches and the FO have things that they want him to work on. He's done a better job not walking people since he got back from the DL trip but I don't know if that's SSS or improved mechanics. Until his last start, his strike out numbers are still bad. But, like I said, let him keep pitching and work on it.
  6. This just came out - Colby Rasmus is on the restricted list. Not sure if this means he won't get paid. Sounds like he is struggling with a hip injury and might just want to call it quits. Had a good slash line in limited games this year.
  7. That's not on Ryan anymore than Levine is to blame for not getting Luis Robert. Ownership has never shown that it will go beyond what limits mlb has put in place. In the old Mauer thread, someone even posted an old quote of Pohlad's where he said it was important to fight against increased money to amateur players. Regardless of who is GM, the Twins will not sign a big FA guy or win a bidding war for a top international FA. We have to hope for guys like Santana to play above his contract and/or for guys like Park to be better than expected.
  8. Span was a major asset, it didn't work out. Dozier and Santana are arguably in that category as well.
  9. Let's also remember that for all the griping we have here, the White Sox are now on their 5th straight losing season so I'm not sure it's fair to suggest that they are rebuilding better than the Twins.
  10. Twins systems were just as lauded. BP gave them 8 in a couple years, I believe Klaw gave them even more. Some of their prospects will work out, some won't. Right now, both Gioltio and Fullmer have era's over 5.00 in AAA. Kopech is struggling with his control. There's a lot of talent in the system but lot of risk too. I probably like Cease a bit more than some of the arms ranked above him.
  11. Not sure. I'm ok with their non-moves on the offense + adding Castro. They seemed intent to let the young core play. They didn't trade Dozier so I suppose that's a strike but it doesn't seem like there was ever a really good offer. I loved the draft. I loved adding Pickler. I loved moving Sean Johnson to draft guru. I'm glad Bruno is gone and Rowson (sp) seems good. Sure, the bullpen and rotation are bad but really there weren't necessarily better moves (at their prices) out there. Different ones, sure. But not automatically better. So, nah, I'm not overly bothered by Breslow or Belisle getting a contract. Now, if they don't make any affirmative changes and keep Molitor as manager next year at this time, I'll be upset.
  12. The lower minors are filled with high upside guys. That's generally true of all systems and we have to wait a bit to see who breaks out but Lewis, Rooker, Enlow, Baddoo, Miranda, Javier, Kiriloff, Diaz are damn exciting and they have very high ceilings. Lewis and Kiriloff have already been ranked top 100 by some rankings and I'd bet most of those other guys get on those lists, too.
  13. Man, I can't imagine how negative you're going to be when the Twins don't have the fifth best record in the AL. Give Levine some time, I think he'll be a pretty good GM and I'm fairly certain he knows what the team needs.
  14. Eh, I know people need to rip on the Twins but Berrios was a damn good prospect. I think he should at least count as mediocre. I do like your Trump-like "... SAD" thing though.
  15. So does this trade increase Santana's trade value or is he still not worth anything?
  16. Was not the premise of this thread that the Twins don't make a trade? We saw that no market developed for Dozier last year so there's probably not much there. The Twins do have some young hitters they could try and trade - Gordon, Rosario, Kepler, Buxton, Sano (in that order) - but they aren't ever going to make a major FA signing.
  17. Wow, nice work by the White Sox. Quintana is having his worst season and pitchers are always risky.
  18. https://www.minorleagueball.com/2017/7/12/15948606/mid-season-review-minnesota-twins-top-20-prospects-for-2017
  19. Probably depends on what Pineda and Santana would be. Honestly, if those two and Berrios and Mejia can combine for 750-800 innings and an above 100 ERA+, I think yes, they could be a playoff team. (Heck, they could be a playoff team this year and aren't anywhere close to that). Pineda has a 104 ERA+ in 8 starts this year. Mejia a 102 ERA+ in 13 starts. Santana will regress but would hopefully be a good innings eater near a 100 ERA+. Berrios is a stud. So it is possible. But if they can't reach those innings, then it gets dicier. Romero is close but neither he nor Gonsalves is ready to make 30 ML starts. But 10 or so solid starts down the stretch (ala Boof in 06) is possible. I'm not sure Gibson is anything other than a hope and prayer at this point. So there isn't a lot of room for error in that kind of rotation but if they have four solid ML pitchers, then they could be ok.
  20. I've mentioned this before but I really loved last years picks of Miranda and Baddoo back to back. Really young guys (both were 17 on draft day) but already had solid tools. Both added some muscle per Bob this offseason. They are a long way off but there's a lot to be excited about for both of them.
  21. I believe Santiago is a FA at the end of the year. Twins will keep Gibson b/c he's a warm body and has another option for next year, if needed (I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure we didn't use them in 2014-2016 and he doesn't have 5 years service time yet). The Twins will probably sign someone in the 4/45m-ish bin. Pineda, maybe? Santana Berrios Mejia Pineda Gibson May/Gonsalves/Romero/Jorge/Hughes?
  22. A couple thoughts - 1) he might be up into the pen 2) an innings limit, as opposed to shutting him down early, still keeps him on his routine of getting ready for a start every fifth day (or whatever it is in AA).
  23. Nice article, Seth. I really like Gordon and am enjoying his break out year. With Polanco struggling a lot, maybe Gordon is the longterm answer at short for us.
  24. It's time to move Rooker. I'm ok with him starting in that league since he's getting used to playing everyday, habits and whatnot but it's time to move him to a more competitive environment. He's 22. He should be in A ball as a minimum now.
