Winter Meetings - Search For A Starter

I thought a trade for Cole would have to include Gordon and Romero/Gonsalves but I think Jay and Granite is a roughly equal to that. I like Gordon a lot (I think he's our #1 prospect) and Jay could be an absolute killer in the pen but his injury history is such that I think its ok to move on. But he could really come back to bite us. But Cole could be a nice piece in our rotation. I think the deal is fair - might be a bit too kind to Pitt and maybe they need to throw in a small piece back - but it's certainly a decent starting place for a negotiation.- 169 replies

So earlier today one of my windows was open to CNN but the page was moved slightly up so the top words were cut off. So when I clicked on that window, I saw Breaking News on the bottom and "Trump to resign" on top and I was so very, very happy until I scrolled all the way up and it said "Sen. Gillibrand calls on".

I don't want Hawk in the HOF but I do think that some guys - Jim Kaat - should be considered for their overall contribution. As a player, Kaat is borderline but he's been a great ambassador to the game for the last, what, 30 years? Seems like the hall could recognize individuals like that. -

Interesting, insulting a woman reporter = no entry to HOF. Where does Bonds' PED use and DV allegations put him? How about Clemens' PED use or his alleged affair with a 15 year old girl? How about Smoltz' comments on same sex marriage? As for the Radke comparison (and others), I suspect if Morris had thrown 30-40 less innings a year, his rate stats would be far better. For his career, Radke threw 2400 innings, 113 ERA+ and amassed 38 fWAR. From 79-88, Morris threw 2400 innings, put up a 114 ERA+ and amassed 40 fWAR. (Yes, bWAR has different valuations of those innings). He then threw another 1300+ innings.

I dunno man. Reading that article it seems pretty clear that he wants WAR to be the decider or close to it. Basically, the article seemed a lot like a guy with only child syndrome saying since something isn't like how he'd want it, it's not good. Seemed petty to me. That's probably how dbminn read it too.

Well this is entirely on the BBWAA. While some have argued that the writers have lowered the bar for admission to the HOF the one position that they haven't lowered is starting pitcher. Here is how the writers have treated starting pitchers. 2015 - Pedro, Smoltz, Big Unit 2014- Glavine, Maddux (These five averaged 300+wins and 3 Cy Youngs apiece. They are all absolute elite starters and all but Pedro threw over 4000 innings) 2011 - Blyleven - was on the ballot forever and finally got in. By WAR, he's better than some of the pitchers elected in 14 and 15. 1999 - Nolan Ryan - yep, the writers didn't elect a single starting pitcher at all between Ryan and Blyleven, although they put in several relief pitchers. Ryan, of course, is another inner circle HOFer. Jack Morris got on the ballot the next year. 1998 - Don Sutton - 300+ wins, 5000+ innings. That was his fifth year on the ballot 1997 - Phil Neikro - 300+ wins, 5000+ innings, nearly 100 WAR. His fifth year on the ballot and there were lots of articles about "compiling wins" at the time. 1994 - Steve Carlton - another inner circle HOFer 1992 - Tom Seaver - in the conversation for best pitcher ever. And that's the entire list of starting pitchers selected by the BBWAA over the last 25 years. 11 guys and all but Sutton are inner circle pitchers. That is completely small hall voting. Morris, Saberhagen, Tanana, Guidry, Kaat, John, Radke, Hershiser, Cone, Brown etc were all dropped or ignored. Not all were HOF worthy but there were a lot of guys who deserved more looks.

Well, here's the thing. He's a guy who was made by that joke of a stadium he plays in. On the road he put up an incredible .256/.404/.531 line. But in that band box, it goes to .312/.440/.725. His babip, which is largely luck driven, is insanely high everywhere. So he could be worse but the park bails him out.

Integration didn't add to the bottom. Adding players from other countries isn't adding to the bottom. Babe Ruth dominated in an era where the talent pool was significantly limited but he and others of his time are overly represented in the HOF.

Well, Kintzler was actually pretty good, so .... I think there are two issues and one is being ignored or missed. The first issue was "is trading Kintzler good for the season?" That's been addressed. Team had 5% chance of making playoffs, yada, yada, yada. But the second question, "is a weakened bullpen a problem if we make the playoffs", is being ignored. And let's remember that we didn't get a great prospect back for him. We got a c-level prospect. He'll be 21 next year and likely pitching in high A ball. He didn't make Sickels top 20. MLBpipeline seems to be the highest on him and has him at 18 in our system. According to them, his fastball rarely touches 90. He has no plus pitches, he has control problems. They think he still has some room for projection left as he grows into his body but I suspect that part will change in their next write up. Other writers have been less kind. And that's the prospect that the FO decided was worth getting in exchange for weakening a bullpen in the post-season.

And as I've pointed out before, fip based WAR has Morris much higher as well with guys like Hubbel and Palmer. I don't think Morris "lowers the bar" (although we'll see a few articles about that in the next few days) any more than Andre Dawson did. Morris' HOF candidacy was its own narrative, not always about the player himself. Morris and Trammell are actually fairly close HOF cases - both had 7 4+ WAR seasons (Morris in 16 seasons, Trammell in 18), career WAR totals are within margin of error of each other, neither would be in the upper half of their position in the hall but neither would be the worst. Admittedly, pitching standards have been held higher than any other position by the hall voters. Neither won any major regular season awards but both have a WS MVP. And the 80s as a decade have been underrepresented by hall voters so it's good to see them both in.

The stats have shown it's pretty high in both parties and both sides demonize irrationally. I didn't vote for Romney but I remember the left wing hatchet jobs on him. He was the devil. The worst kind of republican, etc. I don't think it's hard to imagine a bunch of people in MN would have supported Franken against, say Bachmann, in a Senate run by saying "we can't let Trump have another vote in the senate."

One could think that making our bullpen worse for a C-level prospect was a mistake regardless of a one game playoff in NY. Perhaps the fact that we had a weak bullpen made us have to use two starters in one game? I think fans have gone a little overboard about trading talent. It seems like some are ok so long as we did 'something' because something is better than nothing when that's not necessarily true.

We're just too partisan. Republican voters won't ever vote for a dem b/c that might mean something bad for the pro-life side. And vice versa.

It's our criminal justice system. If the cop says "I was scared" he gets to kill. I'm not sure if a jury has ever convicted a cop.

Eh, we heard this before and they've constantly underwhelmed with major payrolls. Since 2001, they've only won one World Series despite being loaded with PEDS, future HOFers and the best home field advantage in baseball. **** em. It'll be great to watch Buxton et al win more World Series than the Yankees in the coming years.

Catchers are more valuable than we think - Buetera, Murphy and Herrman all got us far better returns than any of us expected.

Well, if healthy, he and Judge could combine for 100 homers at that park. But he also has some serious injury history and might be an anchor on their payroll in the years to come.

I'm pretty sure Severino was in Atlanta's loaded system's top 20 prospects. I imagine he'd be in our top 15ish area. Nice get. He's got some work to do but he's increased his value after one season, which is a nice thing.
