  1. Timeline? Well, look, you still find more diamonds in the rough at Tiffany's than you do dumpster diving. Here is the thing. Pitching is half the game. Not building a dominant pitching staff means you are an also ran, almost by definition. Having succeeded on a few long shots the Twins made the mistake of thinking they can do it allatime. That's just bonehead wrong. You need 2 stud starters to have a chance to win in the playoffs. Tell me any team that won the series with journeymen in the 1 and 2 spots. Not going to happen. You need studs who can win the game almost by themselves to advance. Frankie (Viola), Bert, Jack, Scott. Those guys got er done. Twins refuse to even consider going after a Price or a Shields. Why? Because they have their heads buried so deep in the dumpster, the can't see the value of having your stud pitchers dominating games 1 and 2 in a short series. Two stud pitchers equate to a .400 record by themselves. Until they realize that they need to spend the money to buy two stud starters, they will continue to cheat the fans. And if KC can bring in a guy who pitched in the college world series and have him pitch well in the WS, it makes makes no sense to keep our Burdi's 100 mph stuff in the low minors .... years away. The Twins are too conservative. Ryan never gambles, except on old retreads. If you wanna contend, you gotta go for it. My timeline would have Jim Pohlad and Terry Ryan forced to watch "Tin Cup" over and over until they get what going for it. means.
  2. Can't imagine Jack Morris ceding that pop to anyone.
  3. If you are going to see errors in the OF, they may as well be made by an old friend you will forgive time after time. --unofficial offseason motto of the Minnesota Twins 2014.
  4. Someone please take the vodka away from Dave. I'd like to see how Dave would feel if his new employer reviewed his performance and considerd firing him after 20 days on the job. This post is unfair to a guy that is a class act. Torii has been a proven winner everywhere he played in his career and he deserves better. He will make a huge difference in the development of our younger players and that is why he was signed.
  5. Vargas and Arcia look pathetic. Escobar is clutch. Made sense.
  6. Vargas is 10 - 20 pounds overweight and his bat is slow. He can't reach the low pitches (and shouldn't be trying to) because of his spare tire. It makes for a slow, lumbering swing
  7. That is an easy one. Elected Al Franken and Jesse Ventura.
  8. There's no walleye fishing in Miami
  9. There are a LOT of guys in A and AA that can throw 93 mph. What Pelfrey is going through reminds me of Jesse Crain. Crain had a decent fastball, but it went straight and got hit. Once he discovered the change and slider were working, his performance improved drastically. Same with Pelfrey. His sinker was occcasionally awesome against KC. But putting a guy who relies on a sinker in a situation with guys on can be risky. Pitches in the dirt are more likel to be passed balls or wild pitches. With runners on, that is bad. The Twins took a big chance on Mike, and they obviously want to get something in return, so I say let him pitch his way out of the rotation now. If his good starts continue, so much the better. Meanwhile, Milone is what he is. At least he is consistent. Ricky looks like a failed experiment. He did show up in better shape this year and that is a positive. But he is damaged goods and nobody wants him in a trade. As for those who say trade Pelfrey as soon as you can.... good luck with that. Teams looking for a fifth starter can get one practically anywhere without giving up much in return. Case in point: Marquis is stiil pitching. Pelfrey and Nolasco are like that beater pickup you want to sell, but nobody will give you more than $1500. For that money you might as well just keep it for a spare.
  10. Playing the two hottest teams in MLB (Tigers 7-1 and Royals 7-0 ) will do that to you. They brought a few meh pitchers to the pen and the Shafe and Robbie act is almost as dumb as the Kubes and Bartlett idea last year. I understand wanting to get that extra year of control over our young guns by starting them in the minors but that idea is so old way of thinking. If the kids are good, pay em and if they prove themselves sign em long term. Forget setting up the ability to control and low ball future contracts. Put the best 9 on the field, and stop with the mediocre talent place holders already. It cheats the fans in so many ways.
  11. Wait, what? We are thinking of making a guy whose fastball can't break a pane of glass the fifth starter? This with May, Meyer, Berrios, and many better arms waiting in the wings? I doubt Paulie does that.
  12. coached a team once. Tie score. Bases loaded, 2 outs in bottom of the last inning. On a 3-2 count, my batter swung at ball 4 (over his head.) Games goes into extras and we lose by 1 run.
  13. A leadoff hitter only gets to bat first one time a game, so it is a stat that is inflated in importance? That is why baseball stats can be so misleading. In the guise of a metric or statistical analysis, the theory misses the point, completely. Like swinging over the top of a Bruce Sutter sinker. The leadoff hitter, if he is the right guy, gets to hit in front of your most productive bats. You need someone who can turn it on if a ball gets in the gap. That is the thing. That it happens only one time for the first time means nothing to my analysis. For 400 to 600 ABs a year you want your fastest guy and one of the best baserunners at leadoff. OK, so any analysis that looks only at the stat carve out misses a lof of intangibles. Like a hitter knowing the runner on first is going for three on a looper to right---meaning he is hoping to score second base on the throw. But more than that. Mauer is no leadoff hitter. He isnt fast, and is not a crafty baseunner that can put pressure on a defense. Santana is. Dozier kind of is. Leadoff requires speed as a prime requisite. Your fastest guy hits there so long as he is not in a slump. Danny is the guy until someone beats him out.
  14. Your best 5 starters should start. That means Meyer, Gibby, May, Santana and Hughes. Ricky in the pen to start. Pelfrey and Milone, only one of those two guys make it North.
  15. Perk is unlikely to be traded. His contract is not uncomfortable for the Twins and he is a local guy who signed it to stay near home. If a Reed or Burdi show up, he may want to go somewhere else instead of being moved to set up man. Until that time, the Twins will hope he rebounds well this year.
  16. I'd like to see Reed and Burdi in this year's bullpen. Take a good look at Sano and Bux and Rosario too. I think a roster full of whiz kids would be fun.
  17. I keep thinking about those out there who were -- saying trade Dozier we have kids coming up, -- saying trade Suzuki, he is topping out on his ability -- saying don't go get Torii Hunter, his defensive matrics are dropping -- saying The Twins will never hire free agent pitching We ended up -- thinking of extending Dozier -- extending Zuke -- signing Torii -- extending Hughes and signing Santana Dozier will hit a lot of hard hit balls to the left side, doubles down in the corner and occasional dingers. Pitchers figured out he was a high ball, inside pitch, pull hitter. He needs to learn to hit the ball the other way if he wants to do better than a .250 BA. They will extend him and should. By contrast, Joe Mauer needs to get stronger and occasionally pull the ball for power. Joe, take one money swing every at bat. Use the other swings to hit for average. Give yourself one chance every at bat to hit one out. Joe could hit 20 HRs a year if he only did that. Kurt wil play well for two more years. But he takes a beating and he isn't getting any younger. I wonder why nobody talks about the effect, longevity wise, on catchers for handling "pitch to contact" pitching staffs. Seems to me there would be fewer injuries catching Nolan Ryan and high strikeout guys than guys that give up a lot of foul tips And Torii is exactly what these young kids need on this team. So we better bring up the guys we really want him to teach, while he is here. .
  18. the forg thing is irritating
  19. I can hear you now, in the winter of 1961-62. Yeah, well Roger Maris hit 61 homes, but that is just not sustainable. Good years are good years and Suze had an all star year. I say he has earned the benefit of the doubt..
  20. Look, Santana is the fastest guy on the team and can steal bases better than anyone, so some guys say hit him low in the order? Incredible. Doze is a pull hitter so he shouldn't hit 2nd, but he steals too. Joe is an opposite field bloop hitter. These days he is a table setter. Hunter is a 20 homer, 90 RBI guy. He hits in an RBI slot. Vargas too, if he is going well. I think the Twins do this... Danny SS Mauer 1b Dozier 2b if he is hitting, or you go with the hot bats 3-4-5-6 in that order Vargas DH Hunter RF Arcia lf Plouffe 3b Suze c Hicks or Shafe cf Why? Because Paul makes out the line up, that's why. Pretty good lineup, I think. They will score runs
  21. Milone's fastball couldn't break a pane of glass. Am I the only one getting tired of all these pessimistic whiney articles?
  22. What a tedious and biased article. I am sorry, but posting a faux analysis piece while really just bloviating about Ryan is bogus. Torii Hnter has been a winner for many years. He is a leader and still can drive in runs. He is exactly what this team needs. If I were you, I'd take note that several people like the posts that disagree with you in one way or another. Wiseone, linus and twins saudi fan, right on.
  23. I like the signing as it adds a proven and durable arm that will be 20 percent of our SP corps. If Hughes repeats or comes close to his performance last year, Gibson continued to improve, May settles in, we have one spot for Rickey, Meyer or someone else that emerges, like Berrios. I see now the wisdom of being careful with Meyer. Made no sense to call him up last year. It would have been like betting on an inside straight in a non contending year. And I have had to get used to the naysayers on here. No matter what the Twins do there will be criitics. I see this as trying to help the team by bringing in a durable veteran arm in a position of need. Puts less pressure on the kids.
  24. Milone can't break a pane of glass with his fastball, so who cares if he has options? We need BETTER pitchers, not more of the same guys with 87 MPH fastballs. The guy is no Jamie Moyer. Duenslinger is on the bubble, but he is a better choice than Milone. Bye to Cola and Parm. I think we need to bring up the kids an let them play.
