    I'm admittedly probably nit picking the "white flag" term used. But if you really thought not having Gibson next season was a white flag - meaning I surrender we have no chance.. would you really pack it in next April if he suffered a season ending injury? A team that simply cannot compete without a singular 3 WAR player cannot compete even with that player

    Are you talking about players potential or what’s been accomplished this year? It’s very likely they’ll be better at 1b, DH, 2B, and C next season if they just use current players on roster or in minors than they have been up to this point Also the pitching staff can absolutely be improved, bullpen especially

    He certainly looks much better over the past calendar year, and I'm probably less of a believer in him long term than most... but if trading away a 3 WAR player signifies a white flag, they likely had; a - 0 depth b - no real chance anyways. Trading him away also gives you a chance to fill that rotation spot this off-season in another fashion. What would happen if they brought him back and he got hurt in April.. pack it in and call it a season? I'm not arguing they are a better team in 2019 without him (assuming they don't get a ML ready catcher or player in return). I'm just arguing he's not good enough to make that big of difference

    I have made this point in another thread, but if you think Kyle Gibson in 2019 is the difference between being a contender or waving a white flag for the season... there's a very good chance you were never a real contender anyways. *I'm not saying I would 100% trade him or anything, but they'd be foolish not to listen

    I don't know, I guess I saw it last year the same as I see it now. A pretty minor deal all things considered, that has potentially a pretty good payoff, either through trade value of Pineda a year from now, or a nice piece for your staff. I think it's way too early to count on many of the options you listed in your previous post (Little, Slegers and Gonsalves especially) to be real factors in the 2019 April rotation. And if everything breaks to plan, and the Twins have too many starting pitching options in 2019. Pineda would probably be a pretty good candidate to join the back end of the bullpen.

    It's easy to throw Gibson on that list now, but I don't know how they could have expected Gibson to be a real factor in the 2019 rotation last fall. Yes he finished 2017 nicely, but before August he would've been a non-tender candidate.

    Because he'll be 32 at the end of his team control, has not been exactly good or even average pitcher until last August.. and those are generally not the guys to extend early or build around

    Hedges hasn't hit even a little bit. Even if the Padres made him available, which I doubt they will, I'd pass

    I guess I'll disagree. Just because options are limited, doesn't change the fact Kyle Gibson is a pretty avg pitcher, so I would never use the words "very good" or "elite". Could lack of other options change the return the Twins could potentially get? Maybe. As for the Dodgers, lets not forget to factor in a Cody Bellinger type may not have been on last years team or this years if they didn't "cheap out" on 2nd base and traded for Dozier, as it sounds as if they Twins may have been holding out for him. I doubt they'd make that trade even in hindsight

    (and last?) - Didn't they play in Game 7 of the World Series? We don't need to rehash that argument again but I would say it worked out pretty well, and their very good pitcher they acquired at the deadline threw up a stinker in game 7. As for your 2nd paragraph, is this Gibson we are talking about "very good pitcher" and "elite player"? I'm not trying to put words in your mouth, just making sure we're talking about the same Kyle Gibson

    We are in agreement if Sano doesn't pan out the Twins are in trouble, and that he is a very vital cog. I guess my point is, why not plan for him to be your every day 1st baseman, or 1B/DH... and have an Escobar, or FA ready to go at 3B. Doesn't that seem less risky than getting rid of your only other 3B option on the roster. Sure, for that plan to work Sano needs to stay healthy and hit, but to me that seems more likely to happen at 1B than at 3b. Not to mention, they are likely a better defensive team with Sano at 1B and Escobar at 3B than they are with Sano at 3b

    There is enough concern surrounding Sano and his bat, conditioning, etc. I would not advise the Twins add to that giant concern by saying he has to be able to stay at 3B for 5 years to be valuable.

    Right, I get your point. But providing 2017 splits and ignoring age, 2018, cost, position etc. makes it impossible to answer the question you asked at the end of your post

    Not familiar with him prior to your post, but would Gibson even be enough (let alone asking the A’s to add a player). This guy looks legit

    As bare as the cupboard was in 2016 + 2017, the respective "negative WARs" add up to -0.9 and -1.0 total for those seasons. And the cupboard is not nearly as bare heading into 2019, even if they don't trade for or sign a starter this offseason, which I would expect they do

    For what it's worth, there wasn't 1 qualified pitcher in the majors last season who was worth even -1 WAR, let alone -2. So I would assume they wouldn't replace him with someone that bad. And Gibson is just about at his career high WAR right now and its 2.0, so banking on him being worth 3 next season is a stretch. With Berrios, Romero, Odorizzi, Pineda, Mejia, Gonsalves, Little, May and whatever else they do in FA/ Trades, the cupboard certainly is not bare.

    I was simply commenting on this statement; The time has passed to sit on your hands and wait for the prospects. Let's see a real attempt to win some ****ing baseball games. If you end the season with just 83 wins and miss the postseason and the most significant free agent casualty is Kyle Gibson, **** it. I don't care. BTW, if having Kyle Gibson or not having Kyle Gibson next season makes a huge difference, odds are you didn't have a very good team in the first place

    Your post read to me as you don't care about the future, you care about attempting to win the division in 2019. I wouldn't necessarily pursue a Gibson trade, I think there's an outside chance with the right moves the Twins could improve substantially next season... but I would certainly answer the call and pull the trigger if someone is desperate enough for a starter like Gibson next week

    I don't understand this line of thinking in the least. Thankfully the front office knows their job is to build a consistent winner, not playing to win a division only in 2019 and forgetting about the future beyond that

    Always depends on the deal offered, no? I wouldn't actively pursue a trade of Gibson, but if someone wants to blow them away? Definitely

    I think I misunderstood the post I was replying to. I thought you were saying “I’ve always said we should only do this trade if Buxton and Sano are legit”. But you’re actually saying we should roll the dice and just hope they are. I disagree, but I misunderstood

    This trade has never been about 2019+2020 only, if it was why wouldn’t they trade their entire system?

    You're not hurting yourself if they don't??? Giving away 6 years of control of a Royce Lewis + Fernando Romero (hypothetical trade offer to MIA) is not hurting yourself???
