  1. Valencia had 27 plate appearances, I believe, against lefties this year. His career numbers are very good against them. Morneau for the past two seasons has been COMPLETELY TERRIBLE against them. I cannot emphasize those numbers enough. So, how can it possibly be argued that the Twins are getting their money's worth simply by playing Morneau against lefties because he makes $14 million and therefore should "figure it out" (no matter for how long???).
  2. I was going to blog about this, but this will generate more discussion. I propose that the Twins play Valencia at 1B in Rochester and soonish call him up and send that poor bastard Chris Parmelee down (what on earth are the Twins thinking with him!?). Valencia would then hopefully be Luke Hughes+ (except for 2B) and maximizes his value as a lefty-masher. Danny Valencia's career numbers against LH pitching: .325/.374/.485 with 7 homers in 297 PA, and a not terrible 22/36 BB/K ratio. Justin Morneau's 2012 numbers against LH pitching (sit down first): .087/.135/.188 with 2 homers in 74 plate appearances (albeit similar rate to V's career numbers there), and a terrible 4/22 BB/K rate. Morneau's career splits are of course better, but I think they are irrelevant when judging him now. They were only marginally better in similar plate appearances in 2011. A Valencia/Morneau 1B platoon seems to make the most sense as it maximizes the value in a very simple way and it has the added benefit of not "Tosoni-ing" Parmelee. And then the Twins have another power (vs. LH at least) bat in the lineup. Willingham-Plouffe-Parmelee at 4-5-6 (or 3-4-5) against lefties is pretty appealing. Thoughts?
  3. Well it isn't the "catching position alone" given that they are both going to be in the lineup together most of the time. Also, with regard to having Mauer-Doumit-Herrmann all on the roster . . . it seems less odd if one considers it from the best 13 position players angle and adds in the possibility that A: Joe Benson and Rene Tosoni may not be MLB serviceable until ???, B: someone from this Willingham-Span-Revere OF might be traded, and C: Plouffe isn't likely headed back to the OF. It's possible to have a bench with Herrmann and Valencia on it next year, which might make sense.
  4. I agree that it is pretty murky, but characterizing Doumit as a utility player is not really accurate. I wouldn't call the primary DH and backup catcher a utility guy. And his value as such is probably a bit more than $5 million a season. It looks like it is this year at least. As far as Dozier goes, outside of Florimon, I am not sure what else there is to do (Casilla is not an improvement).
  5. I agree with what you are saying, of course, but Herrmann is likely not going to break camp with the Twins next year (though he is starting to right the BB/K ship over the past two weeks) and so there is that hole there that is not reasonably filled with any other C free agent for a better price. Also, I don't really have a problem with a Mauer-Doumit-Herrmann group on the roster instead of having Drew Butera involved as anything else but AAA help for upcoming pitchers. The first two are injury risks and all three can play multiple positions (I wonder if Herrmann can add RF and/or 1B). That especially makes sense if Morneau is not with the Twins in 2013 (and more likely certainly gone by 2014). Herrmann is also hitting lefties strangely well in a SSS at New Britain (for what it's worth). I guess I would prefer overpaying for a one-year extension (even at $6-7 million) instead of a two-year extension ($8-10 million), but whatever. If he likes playing for the Twins, keep him.
  6. Matthew Koch (pronounced "coach"): Catcher Bats right, throws right DOB: 11-21-88 (23.6) Drafted by the Twins in the 12th round of the 2011 draft. 2011 statistics: Elizabethon 51 plate appearances, .273/.333/.545, 6 doubles, 0 triples, 2 homers, 5 bb, 13 k, 0 steals in 0 attempts. 2012 statistics: Beloit 156 plate appearances, .296/.422/.512, 12 doubles, 0 triples, 5 homers, 21 bb, 41 k, 1 steal in 3 attempts Koch has been fantastic since joining the organization. I would like to see the Twins be more aggressive with him and promote him to Fort Myers soon. I would imagine that is K rate is what they are wary of at the moment.
  7. I have away for awhile, so this is late . . . but Brian Duensing starting is absolutely ludicrous.
  8. Herrmann has 6 walks and 4 strikeouts in his last 10 games. And, of course, in that time he forgot how to hit the ball. One thing that has jumped out at me this year is his reverse LH/RH splits. He has an OPS of .754 (58 AB) against lefties and .690 against righties (184 AB). That is something to keep an eye on, especially if that continues after the much-needed promotion to Rochester. He also hits well at home and struggles on the road. Finally, he is terrible in day games and very good in night games.
  9. I am not sure how the Twins are going to roll out in April next year, but I can see the following by June 1: Ryan Dempster (seriously, please . . . if the Twins refuse to sign long term deals of more than 3 years, they should sign Dempster for 2 and an option) Kyle Gibson Liam Hendriks Scott Diamond David Bromberg And I think this will be a starting rotation superior to that which has been played out through this season. Yes, this means that Nick Blackburn either becomes the long reliever or is released because he is terrible. Or maybe they make him in to a Burnett-esque role and just deal with the overpaying of such a middle reliever who probably would be more effective there than in the starting rotation. God, he is terrible. And yes, that means Liriano, Pavano, and Baker are gone. Hopefully the first two can be traded at the deadline this year. Baker will just be lost. Now maybe in trading the likes of Liriano, Capps, Doumit, Pavano (hopefully) and Casilla (hopefully) individually or in various packages will bring back some bonafide starter or AA/AAA prospect. That would shake things up. I do think the above rotation could get the job done for 2013, which is to develop into a .500+ team.
  10. Parker, you do a great job trying to unravel this mystery.
  11. Weeks clearly went out of his way to hit Mauer. Anyone seeing the replay and not stating that is either blind or lying.
  12. Very good see Arcia's progress. Dolenc was clearly the odd man out, though he can fit in with some organization.
  13. Whoa, seriously?! That is good to have a number of players together like that.
  14. My lineup exactly.
  15. Thanks for this and keep up the good work! Fort Myers is in your future.
  16. Clearly that was a mistake, based on ST performance once again. He also got injured . . . so I am not sure why they released him. They ended up doing terrible things like signing Clete Thomas and Joe Thurston, for crying out loud.
  17. That's true about Morneau, but he also clearly SHOULD HAVE been rested more often during those years, because his Septembers were TERRIBLE most years.
  18. Willingham has 2.6 years on his contract paying him a total of $18 million still from today on. Teams had a chance to bid on him this winter and the Twins won. They are not likely to trade for him this season.
  19. Thank you! I never even thought of trying ESPN.
  20. Beating CDog to it! There is some issue involving both Revere and Gardenhire not liking Revere in LF during spring training (you know, this team makes significant decisions based off of freaking spring training).
  21. As they shouldn't. Hence the end of the Jeff Gray era soonish (hopefully he doesn't slam the door behind him and Anthony Swarzak follows him out).
  22. Yes to all of this, though hitting .240 would make him Rochester-bound in my view. I do have a question for you though. Let's assume this production continues. Does Revere bring back more in a trade than Span?
  23. The Benson problem this year raises a number of issues, yes. That's like a domino because he and Tosoni were the guys readyish to contribute. Hicks is likely a September 2013 call-up. Arcia is the other one.
