  1. Batting order optimization is, correctly, probably 1.5-2 wins. If that is ALL one does to optimize the team, then certainly it doesn't matter all that much. But if a manager optimizes other areas like bullpen, rotation, platoons, etc. then it adds up to 5-8 wins. And that's just due to roster management. Not sure what the point is at all that John is making.
  2. Also, it is conceivable that the wild pitch would have never occurred if Carroll were batting (different pitches thrown, Carroll puts it in play earlier, etc.).
  3. I am not sure how there is this "down a run" idea here. They weren't. Gardenhire wouldn't have pinch hit if he didn't have BOTH Carroll and Florimon, I think. Not sure why there is so much animosity towards Ramirez. He had a good at bat there and almost beat the throw. Seriously I am listening to this: and minutes into this part of the conversation, finally John corrects the notion that it wasn't a one-run game. They were down THREE when Gardenhire made the decision to pinch hit Ramirez for Florimon. With Hicks on deck.
  4. It was 3-0 when they pinch hit Ramirez for Florimon. One run came in on a wild pitch in the at bat. Clearly, Gardy was thinking SLUGGING and not simply getting a run or two by batting someone who has a better average.
  5. Oops, didn't look at the DL. Hermsen and Hauser (as SP?) make the starting rotation pretty strong. Darnell and Lanigan are on last legs.
  6. Unless Dean gets his act together, that starting rotation is bleak after Meyer and May. Can't understand filler in the OF instead of pushing Morales in a big make or break season for him. Some of the better OF have struggled some at Fort Myers while taking off at NB. Beresford, Santana, and Hanson make up 3/4 of the infield and then more filler. Daniel Ortiz is the guy to watch here.
  7. Can't argue with any of this!
  8. Well the filler at the top in AAA might be jettisoned and that could hopefully cause a movement up throughout the system.
  9. Morales really needs to just be bumped up a level in my view. Anyway: Morales CF Rosario 2B Sano 3B Vargas DH Gonzales 1B Ray RF Koch C Goncalves LF Pettersen SS Is a pretty sweet lineup.
  10. Hell yes about the lineup. This is *exactly* how I would construct it. That is the first time I have ever said that on opening day at least in the Mauer era.
  11. Zack Cox is not ready for MLB.
  12. Good for Arcia, Pugh, and Albers. Maybe the Twins heard me and are using Albers as the long reliever for the first several Gibson starts . . .
  13. My sleeper one word answer would be: Jays.
  14. That is not the only factor for the generation of runs for the 2013 Twins!
  15. Yes, you are taking away the first inning from him, but after that? But what is the overall point? The number of runs produced is what is important. And while Mauer has been best with RISP he is also the best at "setting the table." In the first inning, I submit the claim that getting two OBP guys in front of three sluggers (including Doumit) is going to be the best way to generate runs. Think about the benefit of guaranteeing Willingham and Mauer both batting in that first inning. Think about the benefit of getting two sluggers to the plate in the first inning if either a run is already scored or one of the first three batters gets on.
  16. Another Gleeman tweet: "Decades of research shows that teams score more runs when their best hitter bats second." Do you really believe that he will have fewer opportunities with RISP when he moves UP in the order (getting a several more plate appearances)? How often did he come up with RISP in the first inning last year? I would take a good chance that either Hicks or Mauer is on base (and sometimes both) for Willingham and Morneau with one or no outs over a poorer chance that Hicks or X is on base and Mauer up with one out. This just seems a bit obvious, Puck. Do you have info on chances with RISP by position in the order?
  17. Gleeman tweets that Mauer is going to be batting second. Hooray!
  18. Exactly. And these comments coupled with the terrible comments about Escobar and Pelfrey in the game article make me cringe. His first word in response to what a 2-hole hitter should do was "bunt." How terribly stupid is that!?
  19. Anything about this so far? I was wondering if people were going to get the chance to keep their player(s) from last year or not. For me, I would like to keep Herrmann, but not Koch.
  20. I don't understand Roenicke and Wood being signed. At all. Pressly should probably be used in that role and the Twins should send Swarzak packing to find Bigfoot. I like Pressly because maybe there is a little Matt Guerrier in him. And I wish it was Slama time for say a 20-inning trial. I actually think a straight up Slama-Robertson RH-LH usage could be effective in the 6th and 7th innings. Speaking of, Robertson will be much better this year than last, if he is used properly. 40 innings against lefties would increase his value a lot. He struck out 22 of the 72 lefties he faced last year and was very effective at the end of the year.
  21. You imply 1991 or 1987. I will go with 1991. I think it has actually been true (or true-ish) that Twins regular season standings mirror the minor league standings (aside from 2011 in particular). That seems anomalous though. And that is team standings, not individual player performance. Spring training should mean little more than simply getting players up to 100% capability for the season.
  22. I would project both Herrmann and Pinto on the roster in the future. It helps that they are opposite-handed. I think Doumit will be traded at some point in 2014.
  23. Though that article is still mildly frightening.
  24. Excellent post. Right on.
