  1. They often have moved them slowly. This was demonstrably true through 2009, at least. This, I think, has more to do with the lower levels. The Twins seem to have the idea that AAA is pretty much a waste of time, which is the opposite end of the spectrum.
  2. Another person seeking Mike Pelfrey for multiple years. I am going to eat my shoe the next time someone does this. It's out of control.
  3. Yeah, I want to actually get a better understanding of the SS/2B situation as it pertains, to Beresford and Polanco on the one hand, and Santana and Goodrum on the other. Isn't it true that the first two are better shortstops? Yet they play second most of the time while the latter two stay at short. Polanco is very good and is the best at his position after Rosario, or the best SS.
  4. If Sano is hitting 31 homers for the Twins when he is 33 I will be happy about that too.
  5. Adam Dunn has a career .861 OPS, 437 homers (6 40 homer seasons, including 5 in a row), and it was only in like his 12th full season that he went and got terrible. That was 11 full seasons of very good performance.
  6. Yeah, that's a pretty clear indictment of both of them. I do not expect anything different from Gardenhire since he is, you know . . . I won't say it. But from TR it is a bit strange. It tells me that they really think of AA has Majors-Light or something. And that's dumb. I remember at the winter meeting Ryan indicating that even Benson was a contender. The big thing to me was the leadoff situation. I wouldn't have been so bothered with a healthy Mastro in CF for awhile . . . if he batted 8th. They just had no leadoff hitter (probably should have gone wild and crazy and put Mauer there).
  7. I responded to this blog post a few days ago, but will summarize here: There is nothing that shocking whatsoever about Aaron Hicks' season. What, Shane? April: How many players in recent baseball history have jumped a level and then been asked to bat leadoff for the MLB team? I have asked that before and I don't think I got an answer. The rest of the season: Aaron Hicks has never been a fast adjuster upon promotion. In 2012 he did do very well in New Britain, but if I remember correctly, he started out slow there and it was only after being down in the lineup for awhile and THEN getting put up at the top of the NB lineup that he ended up going off. He has always been slow in even normal step-by-step movements up the system. His post-April numbers are not at all that surprising given B, and the April numbers are terrible, but really not completely surprising either. The attitude towards Hicks around here is what is surprising though. It's as though people are ignoring his entire minor league career. And ignoring the fact that he was thrust into a ridiculous situation to begin with this season.
  8. The Twins should not, this offseason, move laterally. They need to actually SIGN starting pitchers. All trades should either be position player prospects for starting pitching prospects (doubtful) or trading oldsters away for mid-tier prospects.
  9. A: I would take similar pitching prospects in return for Harrison and Santana. I also wouldn't call them "marginal" in that those two would probably be 8-13 on half or more team lists. Basically the Willingham add-in was to basically go higher . . . like for a Rosario-level prospect (but a pitcher). I get the Duensing joke, but casting of actual major leaguers who had been around and--at that time (or any time in Casilla's case)--done little isn't the same as two prospects might make some people's top 12 or so for the Twins. As far as Willingham is concerned . . . if the Twins were legitimate WS contenders next year, I would probably want to keep Willingham and if I didn't have him, I would at least listen to a trade. That is, if I were a GM for a 2014 WS contender (let's say 10 teams) I would listen to trading for Willingham and two top 20 prospects (in the org.) for my third best pitching prospect (Rosario is third best hitting prospect . . . . ).
  10. Well the Twins used the mix-n-match . . . of Drew Butera for a good pitching prospect.
  11. The clamor about chilling on wild dreams about prospects is fairly warranted. That is, not all of them are going to turn out good or great. So . . . we are talking about potentially trading one of them? Say what? Keep in mind that Danny Santana and Travis Harrison, while 10-15 for the Twins, might be more like 7-12 for most other teams. If you add in Willingham with those two, I see no reason to think that getting a top pitching prospect in AA or AAA is out of the question. Look what Butera brought back . . . a good pitching prospect, though at a lower level. Other than that, the Twins should be focused on signing two FA starting pitchers who are actually good. And, you know, even if it doesn't work out and they underperform, they still might be worth something to trade for better, younger pitching . . .
  12. He's a second baseman, though! I don't understand how "league average" applies here. "League average" should never apply unless by position.
  13. Yeah as a GM or owner, there is no way I would tolerate this.
  14. If the Twins manage to make the right FA signings this offseason, some of this is moot. I am not trading Rosario or Dozier. Sorry.
  15. When I mentioned Santana and Harrison, I meant for the return to be similarly ranked prospects on the other team (the 10-15 range).
  16. Yeah if Dave Martinez was up for it, clearly. But this is Gardy's team. Somehow. But if a change happens, I GUARANTEE that if Steinbach wants it, he gets it. Guarantee. After that, it's Dougie or Jake. Full stop.
  17. Uh, again. Maybe Santana and Harrison?
  18. Yes that is right. It would be nice for this team to actually see how is MLB worthy from within as opposed to giving really any time to bad baseball players like Clete Thomas and Alex Presley.
  19. Mike Pelfrey has been "good" for 2/7 of his entire career. Why ON EARTH should the Twins bother throwing more millions at replacement level pitching (at best)? Answer: they should not. It's dumb as hell to do so. It make me sick to see a team not spend money on talent and yet spend money on nonsense like Pelfrey. It wasn't a bad idea for 2013, but it is a sickeningly terrible idea for 2014. WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND HERE? AM I taking crazy pills? There is *still* this much support for resigning Mike Pelfrey for millions of dollars and like a couple years?
  20. I like that you open the discussion with really the top prospect for any possible trade consideration. That is good. Now, I don't want to trade Rosario AT ALL. But I like that you wrote this article. Rosario and Dozier = a nice problem, but somewhat easily remedied. Rosario and Dozier together somehow (SS reps IMMEDIATELY for Dozier by the way) makes for a grade addition to Buxton-Mauer-Sano-Arcia. I would rather consider Danny Santana and Travis Harrison together as trade bait. Only with real falters above will these two emerge as Twins. Beresford and Dalton Hicks might really just be kinda better, and at least better in the roles that they could fill down the road for the Twins. I have to wonder what the market would be for a combo of Santana, Harrison, and say Swarzak would be. Or sub Doumit in for Swarzak.
  21. Much ado. He is going to be back. I guarantee it. I would have fired him last offseason, but I am not Terry Ryan.
  22. If I were the Twins, I would keep Albers, Hendriks, and Hernandez around amongst all of the AAA starters brought up. Actually I would have Albers be the long man for the Twins and then pay Hendriks and Hernandez (both are too young to simply let go away) to stay around in Rochester next year. I am basing this off of FA signings (plural) because otherwise Hendriks would just be in the rotation anyway.
  23. And I say the above as someone who has been a bit annoyed about the one game thread or so a week I have looked at over the past few weeks.
  24. Some perspective (and I have been drinking. . . . ): I think that the devolution of good game threads is really just a matter of sheer boredom with each game and this damn team. I don't know if changing anything is really in order right now given it's the end of the year and next year will bring about more serious commentary just by virtue of the fact that at the beginning of the year we will all not know how terrible things are going to be in August and September yet. Also, a "game thread" for baseball clearly is going to involve between-pitch commentary about god knows what. It's baseball. It's slow. That is just how it works. I do think that anytime a game thread gets off the rails a few posters could get it back on course by actually talking about the game. I did so today even when I couldn't watch the damn thing.
  25. I don't like Canadians anymore.
