  1. The 2015 rotation could be: Meyer Kazmir Gibson Hughes May Can you imagine that possibility? I can. The Twins can't.
  2. The title of this thread IS "Early Judgment" so I don't get why people want to get upset . . . it is a qualified by the word "early" here. If you actually look at everything: 1. TR interview for Handbook (I just shudder every time I think about that) 2. Public statements by TR and others, in general. 3. The talk of Swarzak and Duensing preparing to be starters, potentially. 4. The Welker-for-Johnson swap (absent the rest, it's a smart move . . .) 5. The decision to not protect the top, next in line MR in the system. 6. The signing of yet another aging OF filler at AAA/MLB in Chris Rahl. 7. The love affair with Eric Fryer. 8: 1-7 add up to a strange brew (at best) and perhaps the majority of movements to be made this offseason (at worst). Think about it. They now have moved towards filling their rotation with Kris Johnson and perhaps EITHER (not both, right) Swarzak or Duensing. They have added the Clete Thomas replacement (Evan Bigley, Danny Ortiz, etc. aren't more deserving of consideration?) in Chris Rahl. They essentially added a catcher in giving Fryer this two-way contract. That's "significant" movement at SP, backup OF, and C. It wouldn't surprise me if there is one more SP (who the hell knows) added, and one or two roving AAAA reliever types added. And that's it. Too early to judge on the whole, of course. Duh. But I would stop to pause and add up what as already been done and you see that things are starting to fill out here. And it sure as hell isn't good.
  3. Duensing is really not a long arm in the bullpen though. He is basically a LOOGY and that's fine. Swarzak should probably try some more crucial situations later in games and they can move Albers or Hendriks to the long relief role.
  4. Yeah, I am going to do that too.
  5. Anyway, of course this is terribly stupid. Duensing is done as a starter, and Swarzak should be considered to move back further in the bullpen as an MR and not a damn starter again!
  6. Nothing about "talk" matters until they actually make an offer to someone. This happened last year too. Talk and very few offers. BUT: Eric Fryer, Chris Rahl, and Kris Johnson are in da house!
  7. Of course a bunch of marginal AAAA players are not worth protecting. Wimmers and Oliveros probably are, certainly. Albers, Fryer, and Colabello wouldn't be claimed by anybody on the waiver wire at the moment. And either Mastro or Presley should be gone anyway. It's befuddling how they want to protect marginal players and not protect more prospects. It is also strange how people mourning the loss of Duke Welker aren't more bothered by this Achter situation. I didn't care about Welker in part because of Achter's ability to fill in as the next guy in the bullpen. I hope I am wrong and he doesn't get selected.
  8. Given what you have said about Achter in the past, I am really surprised that you are so completely flippant about this! Seriously. Does every Twins decision become a good one instantaneously in your view?
  9. Polanco of Achter? What? Who said that was the actual choice? Eric Fryer vs. Achter. There you go. Breathe with me.
  10. First, generalizing from that fleecing of the Dodgers is not a good idea. The Dodgers have Clayton Kershaw and are also willing to spend about 80 million bucks on pitchers if need be. The value of Sulbaran diminishes in such a situation. Two, clearly Fryer didn't have to be signed to such a dumb two-way contract and would have passed through waivers. There is no reason to then lose the *next guy* in the bullpen who have started in AAA when Eric Fryer is the reason.
  11. I didn't see the Bernadino thing. That's a disgraceful idea.
  12. It would seem that the Astros and Cubs have their own roster decisions to make with their own players and are not going to use a roster spot on a guy who would then need one or two years back down in the minors.
  13. In other ridiculous news, the Twins signed a Clete Thomas clone in Chris Rahl. About to turn 30 and has never been in the majors.
  14. Achter is the most likely player to be lost out of all of them.
  15. Eric Fryer is not going to be more valuable than A.J. Achter. Good lord.
  16. No Achter? What? He was the most likely guy to be added!
  17. Not only could he potentially be useful, but they got him for Welker, who isn't going to be useful for the Twins.
  18. I am not *excited* about Johnson (if I were, I should just jump off a cliff to end it). But, given the possibility of trading back Welker for him, it was a smart move.
  19. And on that note, if Arcia struggles against lefties in the future, Walker/Arcia DH combo or a Walker/Vargas DH combo isn't a bad thing to consider.
  20. RH Jacque Jones is a good comparison, overall. Not as ceiling or floor, but that most likely place between the two.
  21. I believe I am 2 for 5 in my MLBTR free agent predictions: Johnson and C. Young right, Byrd, Hudson, and Ruiz wrong.
  22. I don't understand why we would even want Welker in the first place. Another reliever is not a necessary addition. A possible fifth starter if "it" all hits the fan again with Diamond, Worley, and Hendriks? Not bad. It's very possible that Johnson is ok in that role. I fear that the Twins are not going to acquire more than one upper to mid rotation starter, so adding more at the backend isn't bad. I don't really get how anyone could think that Welker as more value for the Twins than Johnson.
  23. I don't understand how anyone would prefer a reliever with likely no real future over a starter with likely no real future, especially with regard to a team with a good bullpen and a pathetic rotation.
  24. Anyone paying Nolasco X number of years and 40+ million dollars is making a big mistake. How is this not blatantly clear? I am so confused. I would see if Garza is interested in 4 years and $72 million. I am always much more willing to pay more per year than to extend the years. Arroyo should be offered 2 and $24 million.
