Article: What Holes Still Must Be Filled?
tobi0040 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With regards to Sano to the OF....The Twins have had both of these guys in their systems for years now (Plouffe and Sano), It has been clear for a few years they would intersect on the MLB roster. In fact, it would have happened in 2014 if Sano didn't have TJ and as it seems, we are moving a 22 year old Sano to the OF and handing him a position he has never played. I see two conclusions. Either we are trading Plouffe or we have been asleep at the wheel here. -
I think this trade tells me two things. 1 - We view Ryan as a starting catcher and a guy that can help the team this year and eventually be our starting catcher for several years. 2 - We have doubts about Aaron Hicks. Time will tell if we were right. Here is what I like. 1 - We dealt from a position of strength for a position of weakness. 2 - We targeted a player that was likely better than any catcher we have in our system. 3 - We added a year of control 4 - Hicks in the corner OF spot, especially when he hits arb next year is EXTREMELY replaceable

They both have 10 seasons under their belt and Shields has accumulated three times the WAR. This meme needs to stop.- 108 replies

To me Felix has the upside teams look for but is a very difficult guy to stash on your 25 man all year. He did not have great numbers in A ball last year.

Agreed Shane. Nunez is as replaceable as you can find and Fien at $2.5M was a silly tender. I would have added Jones and Michael and said goodbye to those guys

Article: Shields For Nolasco: Would You Do It?
tobi0040 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not sure us chipping in Polanco and Nolasco nets us a good closer in return, especially one that is controlled three more years. The struggle with seeing these trades for some on these boards is the fact that Nolasco has negative value. When you have a guy owed 2/25 that is worth 1 year and $3M as a free agent, you have a guy that you need to eat a ton of salary and/or give up an additional player/prospects in order to move. I think it is questionable whether or not we could trade Nolasco and Polanco for nothing. Is Polanco worth $20M right now?- 108 replies

I guess this is the rub for me. Nolasco has accumulated 10 WAR in his career in 10 seasons (1 WAR per season average). James has accumulated 29 WAR in ten seasons and is being written off after a 1.9 WAR season, double that of Nolasco's average. I get the blocking concerns. But they are not a substitute.- 108 replies

Rosario accumulated a WAR of 2.2 last year at age 23, while only playing 122 games. He will make nothing for three years and it controlled another six or so. I am keeping him in the OF. If we have money to spend, we could do better elsewhere. Rosario accumulated the same WAR as Fowler in fewer games.- 108 replies

Article: Shields For Nolasco: Would You Do It?
tobi0040 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Per Beradino, the Twins are trying to move Nolasco. Here is the important part: Another industry source said teams would likely need to see Nolasco take the mound next spring, if not into the 2016 season, before a trade could be worked out. After missing nearly four months last season due to a right ankle injury that required surgery, Nolasco is being viewed purely as an expensive depth option. He isn't guaranteed a spot in the Twins' resurgent rotation, which doesn't even have room for young right-handers Trevor May and Jose Berrios at the moment. http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_29217799/twins-trying-unload-ricky-nolasco- 108 replies

So then your options are AAA if he accepts, DFA him, or give him reps somewhere. The place he hurts you least is probably long relief. We simply cannot afford grandfathering him a spot in the rotation. He pitched 37 innings last year. Averaged about 4 IP per start. Gave up 1.7 runners per 9 and 6.75 runs. 1 game can make or break being a playoff team, home field, etc.- 108 replies

Well in the context of a not gonna happen Nolasco for Shields swap, I would push back that we are selling at a low point. At no point in the last 7-8 years would that have ever been floated as a trade given the disparity between the two players. So the Padres would be sellling even lower I just don't' want to see Nolasco given reps anywhere ahead of a 20-24 year old with much more upside who is controlled for 7 years (Berrios, Burdi, Reed, etc.). I would try and give him away (which we probably have been attempting for two years now), when that fails I would make him a AAA starter until he completely dominates.- 108 replies

If we have no intention of moving Sano to the OF (which I don't think we really do), I would sign Span to a 2 year deal in a heartbeat. Arcia was a disaster defensively in the OF. Right now I think we have three young guys, Rosario, Buxton, and Kepler. One will falter.- 32 replies

Article: Shields For Nolasco: Would You Do It?
tobi0040 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What exactly is the worst case? Shields is really bad here and Nolasco goes onto two great years? These are calculated risks. You add a career 109 ERA+ guy for a career 90 ERA + guy with injury issues. Moot point anyway, Nolasco has no trade value whatsover. We will continue to see lopsided deals on this site. We are stuck with the guy unless we give him away and eat a majority of his contract. On top of being awful for two years and owed $25M, he has question marks about his health that are not answered at this point.- 108 replies

No question opt outs are very player friendly. But the reality is very good players have leverage over teams that want to win. The Dodgers may not have been able to get Greinke if they didn't offer one from the get go. So while 6 years is better than 3 + 6, but they received 17 WAR over three years from a guy they may not have been able get otherwise.- 108 replies

I appluad your creativity and realism. It would take the Twins adding more to this, like Plouffe and Polanco than the Padres add (Pomeranz) in order for a Nolasco for Shields swap.- 108 replies

The interesting thing about that is that a year from now Shields will have about what Ricky has now left. And he may actually opt out, at least will have to think about it. No way Ricky would opt out of 2/25 now. He would get 1-3 or a minor league deal right now.- 108 replies

I would much rather have Upton. He had a .755 OPS last year. He hit lefties to the tune of .792 in his last year He could at least be a platoon OF bat, 4th OF, pinch runner on the low end. Nolasco has no role whatsoever.- 108 replies
