  1. Is anyone else surprised in this day and age, you still see "scouts will be in attendance to watch player x" MLB ticket anyone? I would think that would be the best view
  2. I think Raffy Palmeiro vetoed a trade to a contender once. Lucroy would have been better off asking for a few extra million. Because he won't get anyone to waive the option. My understanding is his no trade is limited. So I would expect he is moved to a team not on his no trade list now.
  3. Ideally. Duffey to pen and May to AAA to stretch out. Getting a little late for that but it would show they have semblance of what they are doing
  4. Doc, I don't mean to criticize. But I hear this one a lot for Nolasco. Some NL team could take him. Isn't the reality that any pitcher that goes from AL to NL will benefit? The numbers show he was the worst in the league by ERA over the last two and a half years. So any other pitcher moving to the NL will be better than Ricky.
  5. There is absolutely no shadow of doubt. Molitor does not view this as part of his job description.
  6. Yeah. It is sad. Worse because you can make the same exact argument for Berrios, Chargois, and Hildenberger not being up here. I am most interested in who the new GM will be. Because these issues won't get fixed until that does. Hopefully the new GM takes a look around at Buxton, Rosario, etc and realizes that the development team needs to go as well.
  7. For those that still are holding a glimmer of hope, that start should give them more No glimmer here though
  8. I am being told Kintzler is getting a lot of interest. The source has been reliable in the past.
  9. I am not sure what happened. In a few years his reputation went from "slick fielding will stick at SS and weak hitting" to "can't stick at short and good hitter". Maybe the Twins just haven't done a good job assessing their own players? Where they can and can't play, etc. they always seem to be overly critical of young players defensively but okay with Nunez at short. Kurt at catcher. Delmon or willingham in the OF
  10. I think 300 AB is way too soon to give up on a guy hitting somewhere in the lineup In AB's 150 to 300 or so (second stint) Buxton cut his k rate from 49 to 34 percent and has an OPS of 606. Not good at all, but some improvement and it took Gomez 1,500 AB to get his OPS over 650.
  11. Just a crazy thought. Why not put the guys you need to get at bats at the top of the order? You know, so they get more at bats? How about Buxton, Polanco, Sano, Kepler 1-4?
  12. If they play him exclusively at SS they get another F minus for prepping their prospects for the big show. Are they so worried about making the Minor league playoffs that they just have to play Sano exclusively at 3B and Polanco at 2B without regard for guys they seem to like at those positions on the big league club? Baffling
  13. This is basically what the Cowboys and Jimmy Johnson did to calculate the value of each draft pick. Then they went out and traded a bunch of players for picks and screwed several teams over. Hershal Walker anyone? In reality I think what Thrylos put together was great and could be improved by a few tweaks. Moving the period of WAR accumulation to account for HS and college players and also some slotting value as you have discussed to point out draft position. Sounds easy but would certainly add work to the analysis. I don't think the conclusion will change all that much though.
  14. It seems like the reason the Twins are likely to hold onto Ervin is that we lack SP depth/talent for next year. So this deal and maybe another like it would potentially pave the way for an Ervin trade. We have Gibson and Berrios penciled in, then you add Mejia, Jay, Gonsalves, Stewart, and Jorge. That is my hope at least. Regarding the trade, I was a little less excited about the Giants 7th rated prospect when I realized they have a lower third rated system. But you take this deal every time for Nunez.
  15. Yeah. Development plays a role. How can a guy with Buxton's speed go through the our system for 3.5 years and never learn how to bunt? That is not on Deron Johnson. I think our biggest issue is the fascination with "athletes" and high school players. We have had four picks in the top 6 from 2012 to 2015 and it doesn't look like we have any stars.
  16. I would really like the Twins to take a look back at their strategy and analyze if it is the best one. We have had the second pick, fourth pick, fifth pick, and sixth pick in four straight drafts. I know it is early still, but it doesn’t look like we have a single superstar. 2008 draft – Alvarez 2, Hosmer 3, Posey 5 2009 draft – Strasburg 1, Wheeler 6, Leake 8. 2010 draft – Harper 1, Machado 3, Pomeranz 5, Harvey 7 2011 draft – Cole 1, Bauer 3, Rendon 6, Lindor 8, Springer 11 From the 2012 draft you already have Correa, Gausman, and Russell in the top 11 making an impact.
  17. Yeah, the obsession with athletic high school players. No question. The Mariners took a road similar to the Cubs, in that they drafted high end college talent that could arrive soon (Zunino and DJ Peterson) and married that with high end free agents (Nelson Cruz and Robinson Cano). The execution has not been as good obviously. We went down the road of high school players and slightly less high end free agents.
  18. Yeah. With an inning like that he has no shot to be as good as Duffey, Nolasco, or Milone.
  19. Agreed. He has the same career ERA plus as Leake and actually better than Shark. So I don't see how 2-27 isn't more of an asset than a liability. Those guys are younger but they got much longer deals than 2 years
  20. A perfect and more manual process would be to adjust the WAR tally based on high school players versus college players. Start accumulating WAR totals a year after the draft for college players and maybe 3-4 years for high school players. Because right now the Mariners are being rewarded for Mike Zunino, who has accumulated 2.8 WAR. That alone is more than 22 teams entire value for the 2012 draft. He has a .616 OPS, is 25, and arb eligible next year. At #3 overall it is hard to call that a good pick. I am guessing he could be had for Byron Buxton if we wanted to trade them straight up. At the end of the day a team drafting Byron Buxton over Mike Zunino is not trying to accumulate the most WAR a year from now. They are looking over the next decade.
  21. yeah, I think the Twins do feel like they need to field a somewhat competitive team each year. That is why we won't trade Ervin and why the rebuild was never really a rebuild at all, and why it was prolonged. I wish they would have really committed to a rebuild and communicated with the fans about where they were and why they were doing it. It may have been a difficult press release or news conference, but speeding it up as well as honesty would have been better in the end.
  22. I would probably remove the first round picks from 2012 to 2015 to make it a little more fair. A team like the Twins that drafts a series of 18 year olds will get penalized here, Buxton, Berrios, Gordon, and Stewart. I suppose a few HS guys like Correa are here from the 2012 draft, but not for very long. I don't anticipate a huge jump by the Twins. Maybe a spot or two.
  23. Mike link, My mobile won't let me reply directly. But I don't think Ervin can be lumped in with Nolasco and Milone. His 102 and 112 ERA plus is about what we should have expected and $13m is not really a bad amount compared to other free agent starters.
