  1. Hitters. For that amount of money the Twins should sign or trade for a good position player. They need to score more runs. Garza in 4 years will likely miss 20 starts or more.
  2. When Mike Matheny was catching for the Cardinals right before the playoffs he opened up a package containing a hunting knife and sliced his hand. He missed the playoffs.
  3. This rotation doesn't win the AL pennant though. If the Twins could get Kershaw then perhaps. This rotation seems like a .500 team.
  4. I think with the Twiins it is understood that they will have periods of rebuilding. They don't spend like the Yankees do. A few bad injuries, wrong players signed to long-term contracts, and a couple of bad drafts and you have a period of losing. Not sure which manager could have won more games with the Twins than the current one. Has to be frustrating to manage such a team knowing their history of bad years.
  5. I'm not sure if he is a sure HOF. Voters still expect more HRs and RBIs since he is switching to 1st base. A couple more years of 50 RBIs in his early 30s might not get him into the HOF.
  6. Not sure what Roberto Kelly and Ernie Whitt are in this comparison.
  7. I think it is possible that if injuries hit that the Twins might only win 55 games. They haven't improved the offense and expecting contributions out of early 20 year old players doesn't usually happen. Phil Hughes may have another bad year like he did with the Yankees. Ricky Nolasco is at best going to go .500 with this team because he isn't pitching for the Dodgers any more. The bullpen could digress. A couple of key injuries and the season could be over early.
  8. Yankees overpaid for Ellsbury and Beltran. Beltran has declined in the 2nd half in the past 2 years and his range is limited in the OF. The Twins haven't replaced Morneau's bat.
  9. What constitutes a year when using WAR/year? I couldn't find Lou Brock in the list. Catchers and SS get under-valued in this system.
  10. It's hard to believe that he is above an average replacement. Seems like he was overpaid as well considering that last year wasn't very good.
  11. How good is Garcia projected to be?
  12. They caught a minor league catcher some years ago doing that for his countryman.
  13. I would argue that the Twins won in 1987 because their division was so bad. Then they won 2 post-season series. The worse record on the road ever for a WS champion. After the fact you could say they had chemistry. The Twins should have made it to 1 WS this past decade.
  14. Isn't the difference of the batting averages with runs in scoring position and no one on base a large number? Could it be that opposition pitchers pitch from the stretch with runners on base and therefore are pitching differently?
  15. Don Mattingly accused the Cardinals of stealing signs. He said that they have a system that uses the 3rd base coach. He pointed out that with RISP the Cardinals batting average was .330 while hitting only .236 with no runners on base. The Twins hit .247 with no runners on base. Seems like it would have to be an elaborate system over a whole season in order to get away with this. If the Cards hit the NL average with RISP they would score 100 less runs. Notice any sign stealing going around the league?
  16. I take it that Fielder was trying to fake interference here and was still called out?
  17. I thought Doumit didn't want to catch anymore which is why would the Braves want him since he won't DH in the NL?
  18. Fangraphs has Pinto hitting 26 doubles and 14 HRs in 563 plate appearances hitting .232. Sound like a lot of plate appearances for a rookie catcher.
  19. Reynolds is only a possibility because of saber metrics being used now. What a strikeout machine.
  20. A couple of those season such as Brady Anderson 50 HR seem steroid-induced. Tudor who started the year at 1-7 had someone notice that he was pitching at a different angle. After that he went 20-1 the rest of the season with 10 shutouts 1 away from the record of 11 by Koufax for a LHP. You don't pitch 10 shutouts in the last 4 months on luck alone. He was injured and fragile after 1985.
  21. He might hit more doubles in Colorado. His 25 games with the Pirates were a disappointment since driving in 3 runs in 25 games is bad regardless of what metric is used. 40 doubles and 20 HRs and he will be considered a good signing.
  22. A nickname you don't forget.
  23. I have to re-iterate that this is a well-moderated forum. Thanks for the service.
  24. They had to try. Still think they will lose 90 or more next year.
  25. The Pyth for the Twins was 61 games so the Twins were 5 games better than the Pyth. Zach and Sanchez look at whether the team they sign with make the playoffs as a factor since they could be choose. Edwin Jackson became way overpaid to go to Chicago since he was always potential. The Twins problem is their minor league development hasn't produced enough quality players since the mid-2000's.
