  1. So really Terry Ryan did a better job than Moore since he turned an average catcher into Nathan and Liriano??
  2. I think we have some selective memory going on. The guys listed below were acquired via trade and played a pretty big role a decade ago. Joe Nathan Francisco Liriano Shannon Stewart
  3. Time and again??? http://www.royalsauthority.com/dayton-moore-history/ Check out the link and count up the meaningful trades that Dayton Moore made from 2006 to December 9, 2012 (while the Royals were stockpiling talent). He did basically the exact same thing TR has done since coming out of retirement. The question is, now that the Twins are close, will TR follow Moore's lead and make the moves necessary to put the Twins over the top?
  4. So reports say the Cardinals have signed Leake for 5 yrs/$80M (and an option for year 6). That got me to wondering what Kyle Gibson would be worth in a trade. He hasn't been doing it at the major league level as long as Leake, but they've been very similar pitchers the past two years. I know everyone wants to trade Milone (and Nolasco), but maybe the Twins should be looking to see what kind of value Gibson has. Or, more likely, maybe we should all appreciate him a little bit more and realize how valuable 4 more years of control are to the Twins.
  5. An interesting name to me is Mark Melancon. There has been talk of the Pirates looking to move him to save money. Adding him to the back end of the bullpen and using Perkins/Jepsen as set-up men would create a pretty strong threesome and may allow the Twins to give May a real chance at the rotation. The downside is that he would be a one year rental and projects to make $10M in arbitration. Any guesses on what it would take to rent him for a year? I'll throw an idea out and let everyone rip on it. Polanco (after trading Neil Walker, they could use a future middle infielder) Vargas (the Pirates are said to be looking for a part-time first baseman) Reed (a guy that could fill Melancon's role in a year or two)
  6. Sure, doesn't mean he has to start every game against a righty, just don't want to see him starting against a lefty.
  7. Rosario: LF Buxton: CF Sano: RF DH Park Bench Bat that plays 3 days a week against righties only: Arcia Utililty: Santana
  8. For the win-now group, maybe we should just send a package centered around Gibson to the Rockies for Carlos Gonzalez and a package including Milone to the Nationals for Storen. This group would probably win more games in 2016. Plouffe, Park, and Mauer could rotate between 1B/DH, and cover Sano's days off. 1. Buxton CF 2. Rosario LF 3. Sano 3B 4. Gonzalez RF 5. Dozier 2B 6. Park DH 7. Mauer 1B 8. Murphy C 9. Escobar SS Bench: Suzuki, Nunez, Santana, Plouffe 1. Santana 2. Hughes 3. May 4. Duffey 5. Nolasco/Berrios Cl: Storen Set-up: Perkins, Jepsen Middle: Fien, Tonkin, O'Rourke, Pressley
  9. I can't imagine the Twins running out a Sano-Rosario-Arcia outfield more than 5 times. I would agree with Seth that it's more likely that Rosario stays in a corner spot and Santana plays a lot of CF until Buxton is ready (hopefully out of ST). I can see why the Twins are considering adding an OF, but I'm really concerned that it becomes a negative if they feel feel forced to keep the guy when Buxton is ready. Rajai Davis is a fine 4th OF on a good team, but who comes off the roster when Buxton is ready? As far as starting pitching, it's nice to be arguing about depth (even if some of it is Ricky Nolasco). It wasn't long ago that we were giving starts to guys that barely belonged in AAA. I really think TR needs to look at the possibility of trading Milone. I actually don't mind him in our rotation, but we need to make room for Duffey/Berrios and trading him looks like the best option (unless Gibson could bring something big).
  10. Interesting that he said he'll sign an outfielder. I'm guessing it will be some sort of defensive guy like Robinson/Shafer. Is it insurance in CF if Buxton needs time in AAA? Does it mean we've given up on Arcia and/or Santana?
  11. The idea of Milone for Storen is interesting, but brings up a lot of questions. Do we actually think the Nationals would do that? If not, what would we have to include on our end? I don't see them being that interested in Plouffe as they've been very vocal about being committed to Rendon playing 3B only this year. They could use some middle infield depth since it seems they have a lot of question marks about Espinosa and whether Trea Turner is ready. What do you think the Twins could get back for Polanco and Milone? Maybe Storen and Erick Fedde or Reynaldo Lopez? Fedde is their #1 pick from 2014 and currently their #4 prospect, probably just out of the top 100. Lopez, their #5 prospect, is another starter that has been in the top #100 but may end up being a relief pitcher. Do we love Polanco too much for this? I'd love to hear thoughts (or why this is a dumb idea)!
  12. I don't really want them to go after him. Just making a point that you don't trade Buxton for a relief pitcher. I wouldn't have traded Buxton for Kimbrel, much less McGee.
  13. Buxton is part of a package that gets you Jose Fernandez, not Jake McGee.
  14. McGee is very good, but I just wouldn't part with any of our top 7 prospects (Buxton, Berrios, Kepler, Gordon, Polanco, Jay, or Stewart). After those 7, I'd be willing to send 2-3 guys for McGee. Maybe Walker, a bullpen arm like Meyer, and a lower level prospect like Harrison??
  15. I don't mind this, but I'd still love to have another solid lefty. A guy like Bastardo would give the Twins 4 solid options (Perkins, Jepsen, May) that they could mix and match to get through the final 3 innings of a close game. Guys like Tonkin, Fien, O'Rourke, and the prospects can fill the other 3 bullpen spots until they prove their ready for late innings. Remember Jepsen (free agent) and Fien (non-tendered) are likely to be gone after 2016, so there will be spots available for the younger guys that end up making it to the bigs.
  16. I do think McGee is a slightly better pitcher than Bastardo (mostly due to better control), but I still don't like the idea of giving up a top 10 prospect which it may take to acquire him. There's a bunch guessing involved, but which would you rather do? Give Bastardo 3 yrs/$16.5 million Trade Kohl Stewart and pay McGee for 2 years at about $10.5 million total or option 3 Sign a guy like Jerry Blevins (who's been pretty good when healthy) for 1 yr/$3 million
  17. I just don't think that will happen. I don't see McGee as having anywhere near the value of Kimbrel or Giles. Kimbrel has been healthy and the best closer in baseball for 5 years. Giles has been better than McGee the past 1.5 years and has 5 more years of team control with the next two being at a minimum salary.
  18. I wouldn't trade two top 10 prospects for him. I'm not sure I'd trade either of them straight up. Much rather just spend the money it takes to get Bastardo.
  19. Would love to see him or Bastardo added to the mix. I would also prefer to spend a little more money than lose prospects and spend money, so I like the Bastardo option. They idea of using a closer committee is still very taboo for most managers, but it does seem to be gaining a little steam around baseball. It really seems to make the most sense, especially if you have capable right handed and left handed options. With those 4 and the prospects that are getting close, the Twins could see the bullpen be a strength in the near future.
  20. Wouldn't the hope be that we'll fall somewhere in between? It's impossible to predict 2016, much less 2018, but in a perfect world wouldn't 2018 look something like this? 1. Buxton CF 2. Kepler RF 3. Sano 3B 4. Park DH 5. Dozier 2B 6. Rosario LF 7. Mauer 1B 8. Murphy C 9. Gordon SS In my mind, this team has the potential to check off most of the boxes you are looking for in a great team. The biggest potential weakness I see is defense at the corner infield positions. This, of course, completely ignores pitching which some people feel is important to great teams
  21. This sounds like something the Marlins would ask for, but I agree that this seems like too much. I'd offer Berrios, Rosario, Polanco, and a lower level prospect.
  22. Here we are a little more than a month later and not much has changed. While I think many will be disappointed, I think Terry Ryan only has a few things left on his to-do list for the off-season. #1-Sign a reliable relief option, preferably left-handed. #2-Gauge the trade value of his glut of starting pitchers. (Gibson has decent value, Milone has small value, Nolasco has negative value) #3-Wait to be blown away by an offer for Plouffe (He better hope the Angels are desperate) My predictions would be that #1 happens (he signs Bastardo to 3/$15.5M), #2 happens when he trades Milone for a mid-level prospect, and #3 never materializes so he decides to go ahead with the Sano OF experiment. That would leave the 25 man roster looking something like this. This would put the payroll around $111M. C-Suzuki ($6.0M), Murphy ($0.55M) 1B-Mauer ($23M), Park ($3M) 2B-Dozier ($3M) SS-Escobar ($1.8M) 3B-Plouffe ($7.7M) 3B/RF-Sano ($0.55M) LF-Rosario ($0.55M) CF-Buxton ($0.55M) RF/LF-Arcia ($0.55M) Utl-Santana ($0.55M), Nunez ($1.5M) #1-3 SP-Santana ($13.5M), Hughes ($9.2M), Gibson ($0.55M) #4/5 SP options-Nolasco ($12M), Duffey ($0.55M), Berrios ($0.55M) Late inning RP-Perkins ($6.3M), Jepsen ($6.0M), Bastardo ($5.5M), May ($0.55M) Middle inning RP-Fien ($2.2M), Tonkin ($0.55M), Pressly ($0.55M) I think the best case scenario with this roster is 88-90 wins and staying in the playoff hunt until the final weekend. The worst case scenario is probably 72-74 wins and a few guys getting shopped at the trade deadline. My prediction is 85-77 and they miss the wild card by 1 game.
  23. I'm for going after him, but I'm not giving up Berrios to get him because we need pitching and we can't give up our biggest pitching prospect to get it. I think Kepler, Stewart, Burdi, and another guy or two is worth it, but I wouldn't give up Berrios.
  24. I agree they'll turn down that offer, but I'm not giving up 3 of our top 5 prospects for 3 years of Fernandez. I don't think Fernandez alone makes us a contender the next two years. I don't think Berrios becoming elite makes us a true championship contender either. Right now we have a bunch of #3, #4, and #5 starters along with the potential of Berrios being a top line starter. We need 2 top line starters, so trading Berrios to get Fernandez makes us a little better, but still short of where we need to be.
  25. Here's my offer to the Marlins. Pick one from each category. 1. Elite position player prospect: Kepler or Gordon 2. Top pitching prospect: Gonsalves or Stewart 3. Boom or bust relief pitching prospect: Burdi or Meyer 4. Former high draft pick that is probably a bust: Michael or Wimmers and 5. Take Nolasco off our hands (we'll throw in 1/2 his remaining salary)
