BREAKING NEWS: Jason Castro Out for the Year
DocBauer replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Overall, I like Castro. For a catcher, OK offensively, good over all defensive skills, and experienced. He's not a star. But how many catchers truly are? It's about game calling and defense first and foremost. I feel he was a nice addition last season and was part of a team that turned things around. I hope he comes back strong and healthy next season. Sort of ironic that the young Garver is suddenly a lightning rod of discussion similar to Mauer, a former Twins catcher. I like Garver's bat a lot. He's shown proven production in the minors. He has a short, quick swing that produces real pop. His arm seems more than strong enough, and had nice CS numbers in the minors. I like that he has caught a few of the best pitching performances we've seen this season. I like that the limited time I've seen him he's blocked quite a few pitches in the dirt. What I don't like is his overall inexperience, and some WP and passed balls you'd expect a better/more experienced catcher to handle. But there is potential there. Do we really run out and make a major trade of 2-3 quality prospects at this point without at least giving him a couple weeks to show his stuff? I know that's debatable, but I say no. Wilson is, by reputation, a good defensive catcher with a light bat, but his defense is why he's still around. Butera comparisons anyone? I think a move of some sort has to be made. A trade for Giminez wouldn't be the worst option. There is virtually zero depth now. But I would Garver at least a few more weeks of steady play to see how he looks. THEN, I'd decide if I need depth or a major move.- 75 replies

STL 7, MIN 5: Lynn with a Dud Again
DocBauer replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sorry Halsey, but you may indeed be the only one. I think we get obsessed with pure velocity sometimes, and Gonsalves sits in the low 90's. Nothing wrong with that, especially being LH. He won't be 24 until July, and is sitting at AAA, where maybe he should have been to begin the year. Have there been bumps in the road here and there and a few bad games? Yep. But wouldn't you expect that of any young pitcher? He has always seemingly made adjustments at each level and produced. Not a SO machine, and a few problems with walks here and there, nevertheless, he's never had a WHIP above 1.14. In 514 IP he has allowed 366 hits. And he is just shy of a 3-1 SO/BB ratio in his milb career. What's not to like there? I wouldn't expect him to come up and flash like Romero. And there will be some bad days, I'm sure. (Sooner or later, Romero will have his too). IMO, he has that "pitchability" quotient that is so important. I think he could end up being a quality #2, probably a very nice #3, and at worse a really good #4.- 53 replies

STL 7, MIN 5: Lynn with a Dud Again
DocBauer replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Or even Slegers. Hasn't he earned another Look? In a few weeks, Santana should be back. (Maybe May). Not sure Lynn as the long man, but what else do you do with him unless he's willing to go to Rochester to regain himself? There is a good blog written by Ted that discusses Lynn's velocity and SO ability and suggests he's nibbling.- 53 replies

Lamonte Wade -- Any believers he's more than a 4th OF?
DocBauer replied to twins1095's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I think Wade is the perfect 4th OF for this team. Not a star, but a guy who just does everything well and can fill all 3 spots and hit at different locations in the lineup, though the top two spots might be most appropriate. His hitting LH shouldn't be a concern as he seems to handle LH pitching well. For whatever reason, I don't see Span. I keep thinking Matt Lawton with less power but better OB skills. I believe, like Gordon, Wade began the year in AA to simply work on a few things. In his case, probably driving the ball better. I believe he and Gordon will be at Rochester by mid season at the latest. -

DocBauer replied to Riverbrian's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Arrived late. Too nice outside not to go for an evening run. Just in time to see the big inning. Hell of a bunt by Buxton! Unbelievable homer by Wilson! Looks like Berrios is back! Liked Berrios going out for the 8th. Too bad he was pulled but I think the right call after such a great performance and to avoid pitching from the stretch. Nice game Twins! -
Actually, I had a typo on Gordon. I meant to say I am NOT down on him, I simply view him as an unproven prospect at this point, who us arguably not yet ready for MLB while Polanco, Dozier and Escobar ARE. (Or somewhat proven in the case of Polanco). I think Gordon will be a really nice player. But push come to shove, I'm interested in keeping a good team and good lineup intact as much as possible.

Getting Late Early in Relief for Twins
DocBauer commented on Ted Schwerzler 's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Great write up! This one of the few times where I will direct blame at the Pohlad's. The new FO has been quick to make decisions, some I haven't always liked, or agreed with, or questioned. And they have been quick, sometimes too quick in my mind, for pitchers to ride the Rochester shuttle. But it just feels like they are being forced to hold on to Hughes until his very last breath as a ML pitcher. And I think the last gasp has already come and gone. Magill, a no name journeyman who has looked nice in a very SSS has looked infinitely better than Hughes is on the roster. For today, and tomorrow, it's past time to move on from Hughes and ride the Rochester shuttle for Duffey, Anderson, Moya, Reed and Curtiss to audition for real help.- 1 comment

Garver Making the Most of the Opportunity
DocBauer replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Surprised about his CS thus far considering his past rep and production in this area. SSS thus far, or pitchers not holding runners better? I've seen good Garver and not so good Garver behind the plate. I think we are looking a bit at a work in progress all things considered. Coincidence or not, we've seen him behind the plate in some of the best pitching performances this year so far. I like the bat potential and the compact swing that seems to really pop.- 7 replies

I like the way you think and won't argue with you. But I would throw a couple curveball your way on your proposed lineup. (And there is a TON of baseball to be played yet this year to determine these things!) 1] Morrison has been heating up, and could still be a must sign, even if he doesn't match 2017 numbers. 2] I am a big fan and believer in Polanco, whether he sticks at SS or moves to 2B. I am NOT Gordon, who I believe will be a fine player, but he is not yet a proven player and may need this year, and maybe part of 2019 before making his mark. 3] I play with roster construction, and even payroll, in my head all the time. Payroll is good, and not even at the ML mean. And there is, potentially, a good deal of money coming off the books next season, as well as after 2019, to allow for raises, extensions and the such. Even if the Twins were to re-sign Rodney and Duke, for example, to something similar, or an equivalent player, Lynn's contract is off the books. Hughes is off the books after 2019, and even if the Twins would decide to bring back Santana for 2019, he's probably gone after that. A Mauer and Dozier re-sign, in theory, so should cost no more than $26-27M. That would STILL be a savings of $6-7M plus the Lynn savings of $12M approximately. There is room to do this if the Dozier years aren't out of whack. Further, there is still room to bring back Escobar and allow for raises without blowing up payroll, (Again, assuming Santana is back as well as Rodney and Duke or equivalent signers, and nine of that may happen.) So while I agree with all you stated, I still feel the team will be in the financial position to keep this roster intact, mostly intact, if it wants to for 2019. They can keep developing Gordon, other "coming to a ballpark near you" prospects while using the remainder of this season to promote Gonsalves, bring back May, get ready for Pineada, continue to promote the young RP that seem so close, and prepare for 2019. I am so damn excited for this team and what 2019 holds!

I have suffered from migraines in the past, though not as severe or debilitating as they can be for some. But IMPO, I doubt it's the migraines, even though can absolutely mess with you when you get them. Those who I have known who have really bad cases can be in bed for 2-3 days and suffer aftereffects for a couple days. Again, IMO, Buxton suffers from 3 things: 1] He is such an amazing athlete, such a natural talent that things have come to him so very easily in the past. That's not a knock on him, just an observation and opinion. A hitch, a leg kick, etc, that still produced great results in milb may simply not work at the ML level. So you have to make adjustments, and I think we began to see that last season. 2] Overall inexperience and youth. He is still only 24yo until December of this year. He debuted at 21yo, and his first relatively "full" season was 2016 at 22yo with 92 G and 298 AB. As I calculate numbers tonight, he has a grand total of 292 G played and 940 AB in his ML career. 3] Injuries, both at the milb and ML level. Even with time missed due to injury in the minors, be was so successful he still advanced quickly. But he absolutely missed developmental time, possibly hurting his ability to pick up and adjust to pitches, especially when you consider how much better the arms are at the ML level. (I refer back again to point #1). And he's missed time here and there at the ML level as well. Not saying he is injury prone or snakebit, but injuries have happened. A little more time, a little bit better health to get in and stay in a groove, and I think he's just going to explode one of these days. It could happen yet this season. But if it doesn't fully happen until 2019 in his age 25 season, I would still be OK with that.

Would be interesting at the end of the year to compare 2 things: 1] Does the new format actually speed up the average time of extra inning games.... ...and related... 2] Compared to years before, has the average of NUMBER of extra innings played to finish a game changed significantly. I can see where the rule could actually assist a milb RP learn from the situation. But just doesn't "feel" like professional ball to me this way.

Twins Minor League Report (5/12): Trevor May Returns
DocBauer replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Awesome to see May back and throw that well first time out. I think he will help at some point this year and be a bigger factor next season. Not arguing promotions, but with all the crappy weather and postponments Rochester has had, I'm beginning to wonder if that's part of the reason for so many guys at AA to begin the season you thought would be in AAA.- 26 replies

MIN 5, LAA 3: Twins Outlast Angels in Gutsy Victory
DocBauer replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Second night in a row I fell asleep before it was over. Am I becoming a good luck charm? Maybe I need an afternoon nap today. Only thing that stinks is Gibson can't seem to buy a win no matter how well he pitches.- 26 replies
