  1. How is Mauer better than Austin next year? Because he hasn't been this year. First base and DH for me next year are... Austin, Kepler, Garver, Sano, Rooker when ready. Sometimes the other corner OF they bring in is the DH, whomever that is. It's possible, though unlikely, that is Kiriloff.... At some point. I'd try to sign another catcher, since Garver can play first, OF, and DH.
  2. Why? I mean, I like the conversation.
  3. I'm not sure how this sentence is supposed to make me feel good: In 45 2/3 innings, he had allowed just seven homers. That rate puts him 132nd among RPs.....now he's nearly the worst among qualified RPs at 155 (Reed is 156 out of the 158 qualified RPs this year).....when I looked, I saw three Twins in the bottom of the rankings....I wonder what that means? edit: more like 125th or so, I think....but whatever....
  4. Congrats to Mauer. Dude was a raking machine earlier in his career.
  5. they haven't at all, but people on this thread are literally doing that. So I'm not sure what point you are making here.
  6. Let's just say Fangraphs isn't as high on him as others.....the rankings aren't universally agreed upon.
  7. Sacrifice bunt in inning 4? Sign me up!
  8. Well, hitting and fielding and base running, going forward......and position flexibility, not just DH and infrequent 1B.
  9. no one is saying 25 HRs.....but single digits, with not many doubles anymore, and an inability to play in the field even half the games matters...... I'm still not sure I get the "25 best on the roster" thing......he is a DH and part time 1B. I'd rather have Garver at 1B, and Kepler, and Sano, and Austin and Rooker. That combination allows them to have options they don't have now, and also very likely results in much better hitting. It isn't just power, or just walks, or just singles, or just doubles.....it is all those combined. And, all those combined, he's not as good as any of the players listed above, other than Rooker, who has a chance to be as good or better going forward. Mauer was a great player. He no longer is. It is possible that if he played 120 games at first his defense would matter, but since he doesn't even play 81, there just isn't enough accumulation of extra outs to make up for what he does on offense compared to other options.
  10. Well, he doesn't pitch, catch, play OF or SS or 2B or 3B, so it's not a matter of being better than any of those players....... It is a matter of being better than Austin or Rooker or Kepler or any FA or 1B/DH they can trade for. Or Sano if he gets time at 1B, or Garver if he does. No one on this thread has asked him to hit 25 HRs to be on the roster.
  11. If you only pitch three players....you aren't playing for the long haul of 162 games, no matter how good or bad they are. The FO signed three FA RPs, and there were other players already the roster. If people are contending there were only three RP options, then I don't think we agree on the early season options.
  12. How many games, in how many opportunities, has it been now?
  13. Garver certainly can hit......now if he can become a decent catcher (which he may or may not be now, but from what I'm told, not yet)......
  14. he's not even going to play half the games at 1B this year.....no way he plays more next year as he ages and others come on the team.
  15. I'd like the team to aim higher than "he's ok as a placeholder" next year at every position.
  16. One of the best hitters we ever got to see, before all the concussions. But, imo, he's not a very good 1B (hitting, defense, running) at this point. I have no idea if Austin or Rooker or Sano or Garver are....but between them, you have position flexibility (well, I'd guess Austin is Grossman like in the OF.....) and youth, and a higher likelihood they hit better. As Chief points out, he won't likely play 1B in half the Twins' games this year. That's just not enough games for the team, imo. Love him as one of the great hitters of all time, but I'm hoping he retires (for his health and for the Twins' chance of getting more out of 1B).
  17. Certainly possible, I don't watch other teams games....but I do recall that when teh Twins had played less games, they had 3 guys in teh top 15 in usage, that seems odd to me, but maybe it wasn't. Doesn't change my mind about Molitor, I'm hard pressed to say what I like about him at this point. But again, like I said, if they keep him, I won't pull my hair out.
  18. Wow....people have been posting about his bullpen use for 3+ years now, so I don't agree that it is hindsight this year. Also, people pointed out in May that he was over using RPs.....and nothing really changed after that. He had 3 RPs in the top 15 in appearances, when the Twins had played less games than all of the majors, and many of those were in appearances that were not high leverage. I don't think it is fair at all to say this is all hindsight.
  19. The sad thing is that it keeps happening over and over with Jay. I thought at least he'd be a MLB RP by now. That seemed like a lock. I'd probably leave him off the 40 man, but I'm not sure. He's on the bubble/line with some other players.
  20. wow, that opinion of Austin doesn't jibe with the numbers this year at all....he's outhitting everyone on the Twins not named Logan or Eddie (and that's season stats, not just MN). Will he hit like this in a full year? Who knows.....but he's not close to Chris Carter right now.
  21. I don't care that Austin has struggled against righties, Grossman is not part of the future, Austin might be.
  22. I was just trying to show the young man some sympathy......
  23. Bullpen over use (of specific players) is a huge issue......as is continuing to play Grossman over Austin, and other examples of more experienced players clearly getting preference, even in a lost season. I don't blame him at all for the players that were just flat out bad this year, that is largely out of his control.....but the two above things are not acceptable. Given some of the comments about the clubhouse by some of the players, I'm not sure how well the clubhouse was managed this year. But, we'll never really know. I've never really been a believer, and he's done nothing to change my mind. Maybe that's not fair, but it is what it is. I'd be good with him being replaced, but I probably won't pull my hair out if he isn't. But man, he's really got to stop burning out specific RP arms....
