    Right. A balk call would have been the technicality call. The umpires probably felt there was no reason to go outside the relevant rule 8.05 to make a decision on this. There is a published Comment in support of Rule 8.05 which I think captures the "spirit of the law" you are looking for. "Umpires should bear in mind that the purpose of the balk rule is to prevent the pitcher from deliberately deceiving the base runner. If there is doubt in the umpires mind, the intent of the pitcher should govern." Hunter wasn't deceived by anything Guthrie did, even though yes Guthrie sped up his windup after Hunter took off.     I think he could end up in Chicago or Detroit, if either of those teams significantly underachieve this year. It's hard to get a feel for these other teams and markets we don't see as much. Gardy will definitely manage again and I'm taking a softer view of him now that it's obvious very little is changing in his absence. Gardenhire had no bigger supporter than Jim Leyland, who is still an important voice in Detroit. Leyland would never throw Ausmus under the bus but Ausmus really seems like he struggled last year. If Detroit misses the postseason I think Gardy would be perfect for that team.

    Not imagining, here it is (link)... although it's not clear if Berardino is attributing that statement to Ryan, it sure seems like a strong possibility that Nolasco could make two starts, to give the team more time to decide.

    I don't know if Gardenhire has an east coast an east coast guy or not (someone who knows him better might be able to fill that in). He can both afford to be selective, but also probably needs to get in next year while he's still attractive. My bet is that if Detroit takes an unexpected nose dive, he ends up there in 2015. And that would be FUN.

    If Kenny Vargas had taken a high swing at that low throw/pitch, the home plate umpire probably would have determined that Vargas was attempting to interfere with the catcher, ruled interference per rule 6.06-c, and he would have jumped from behind the plate with his hands up (just guessing on that, though). The play would have no good result for the Twins at that point. Meanwhile, Perez would probably still have tagged out the base runner (who again, shall remain nameless). And it would have gone as a caught stealing anyway. And honestly if the throw/pitch had come in waist high and a little more outside, instead of right to the ground, the play would have been even less close, as the catcher wouldn't have had to make that extra motion. It probably won't scare Guthrie from pitching from the wind up with runners on, but it might give him cause to take a closer look at the guy on third next time. In this case, it was a very exciting play but with a very, very low probability of it succeeding--all my opinion. I wouldn't mind someone else trying it sometime though But you are correct in that Vargas still has a right to take a cut at that pitch-I assume he does, anyway. Umpires?

    Speeding up one's delivery would certainly seem to be a type of alteration. But I think the pitcher gets the benefit of the doubt since the balk rule is more about the base runners. I think Guthrie played it pretty good, and that the base runner (who shall remain unnamed) probably thought the play was closer than it really was. Any umpire on the field can call a balk, correct? I agree it would be nice to see something in print about how the umpires ruled on it.

    Pelfrey is an emergency starter only. Especially given that May is showing enough to stick around. So unless Pelfrey matches or improves upon his last start, Pelfrey is the odd man out. That's what should happen, though not necessarily will happen. However, in the article, Ryan also said that Nolasco might pitch two games in AAA, which would delay Ryan having to make a decision he doesn't want to make. Which begs the question of whether Nolasco is even good enough to crack this rotation in the first place.
