  1. I agree with everyone that the Mauer projection doesn't seem very realistic, but I've read numerous places that these projection systems spit out very conservative estimates for aging players, and Mauer is on the wrong side of 30, so he fits that mold. That being said, I would be shocked if that particular projection was correct. In regards to the team projection, I just don't see how the roster as currently constructed can win 73 games or more and thus avoid losing 90 games again. For this team to even sniff .500, I think a lot of things would have to break the Twins way, including Sano, Meyer, Pinto, Hicks, and maybe even Buxton coming up and being good right away, Dozier not regressing, the free agent pitchers we signed living up to and even exceeding expectations, and having everyone stay healthy. There are just too many question marks in the lineup on Opening Day for me to be very optimistic about the 2014 season in a vacuum (Suzuki, Dozier, Florimon, Plouffe, etc.--basically every position player besides Joe Mauer).
  2. I would be against this move. I'm not against giving up a draft pick in general, but it needs to be for the right player. Cruz is aging, can't play defense, can't walk, and hasn't been worth more than +1.5 WAR since 2010.
  3. As much as I enjoyed Albers' story last year and as well as he pitched at times, he just doesn't have the stuff to be a league-average starter. I definitely don't mind having him stashed in AAA in event of injuries, but I don't see him being much of a factor--I hope I'm wrong. Is it just me, or does the "overcrowding" in the rotation feel to anyone else like Correia may be shipped out at some point. He seems like the most logical one to go once Meyer is ready.
  4. I got 178. I'm young, so I missed mostly on 1992-2000. Worst misses were Luis Castillo, Danny Valencia, Molitor, Winfield, Steinbach.
  5. I don't think the Twins are a likely landing spot by any means for Santana or Matt Garza by any means, but if they were to decide to sign one of those guys, one would think Correia and his 1 year remaining would be the odd man out, no? It seems to me they'd just flip Correia for whatever they can get so as to not block Alex Meyer from his possibly mid-season call-up and so as to give Scott Diamond or Worley (whoever wins that 5th spot out of ST) some innings.
  6. I think suggesting Mastroianni could have a (relative) bounce back year is fair, but to cite his spring training numbers (or anyone's for that matter) is misguided in my opinion. It's such a small sample size and the outcomes have such high variation that a good or bad spring training numbers-wise is likely just noise.
  7. I think I would be indifferent about a Drew signing. With no context, I don't really view Drew as a guy I would pursue very competitively, but considering SS is one of the only positions this team has that there is really no long-term plan, it would make sense to sign a FA SS to a multi-year deal. Drew as a player is one who I'm not sure I trust be a player of value in relation to the salary he will command going forward. I certainly don't like his OBP numbers, as he has a career .329 OBP which was aided by one season of .352 in 2009. Neither Steamer nor Oliver, Fangraphs' two projection systems readily available on the player pages, really like him very much next year. On top of that, he will be 31 on Opening Day, certainly getting close to if not entering the downside of his aging curve. That being said, if the Twins can get him for a bargain deal because there isn't much of a market fro him, I would do that in a heartbeat. If we can get him for a 2 year commitment which would be a surprising bargain, do it. But I don't see that happening--I think he will end up getting a 3/24 or something close to that, and paying Drew for his 20s and getting 3-4 years of his 30s frightens me a little bit.
  8. I'm in complete agreement with everyone on Morgan. I don't think he would be any significant upgrade over Pressly, plus we would have to make room for him on the 40 man. On top of being an extraneous piece, I think from the organization's perspective they probably aren't very interested simply considering his makeup and reputation as being a distraction in the clubhouse. Although on a personal level, in a vacuum I think he could be really entertaining in a 4th straight (probably) forgettable season.

  10. In my mind, Mauer is a sure-fire HOF'er but the BBWAA is making such a mockery of the hall right now that I don't even know if I care about who's in and who isn't anymore. I know who I think are the best players of all time and that's good enough for me. Why should I care if a collection of out of touch old school ink-stained wretches don't agree? The fact that Jim Rice is in the HOF and Barry Bonds will not be inducted is reason enough to think the Hall isn't overly legitimate anymore.
  11. I've always like Baer's work and I read Crashburn Alley from time to time because I like him and Baumann. I don't think I would completely discount him as a writer and put him and his work down just because I happen to disagree with him on a certain subject. We won't know where the Twins' offseason ranks in relation to the other teams for at least a couple of years if you ask me, so these kind of stories ranking offseasons and drafts are to me empty stories to generate pageviews and ones that I generally skip.
  12. "Double barreled fist pump" is gold, Jerry, gold.
  13. Sorry to get off topic but the Manziel bashing always sets me off on this rant, so I just have to get it out there: I'm almost exactly the same age as Manziel and I can guarantee you that if you put me in his shoes--being nationally famous overnight, intensely scrutinized, and with very wealthy parents who will give me (seemingly) anything I could ever want, I don't think I would handle myself very well publicly either. Especially considering a little over a year ago, he was largely unknown. If I was being vilified every time I went out to a bar or a house party at school, my public perception would be pretty negative as well.
  14. I second orangevening's worries. I have a buddy in the organization (I will leave him anonymous) who backs up this sentiment about Stewart. At the same time however, his numbers and tools are certainly encouraging and it's not like everyone gets along with everyone, so maybe it's not all that big a deal.
  15. Great deal for the Twins. Doumit was the epitome of a boring Twins year last year to me--not only was he terrible, but I have nothing invested in him as a fan either (unlike Plouffe or Parm or Colabello, etc., who you're interested to see if they develop to any extent), so he is a guy that I have wanted gone for a while now. As Gleeman and the Geek said this week, he has negative value for the Twins, so just being able to dump his salary is great, and on top of that, they grabbed a nice lottery ticket. Gilmartin probably won't ever amount to anything, but that's ok. Any value will ever give the Twins is a bonus.
  16. I can't stand this deal. If the Twins were just to bring him back for 1 year, I could handle that, but as one of you said on the podcast, Mike Pelfrey or someone pretty much equal is out there EVERY offseason. Mike Pelfrey isn't a guy you need to lock up.
  17. This is one of the first Twins memories of my life. I was 9 when this happened and I'm pretty sure I was home on a snow day.
  18. Fingers crossed for Fryer because I keep envisioning him being in MN for 4 months this year taking up a roster spot and playing 1-2x/week.
  19. As a left-handed hitter who draws a significant amount of offensive value from his (relative) power (career .329 OBP compared to a career .435 SLG), I don't think the Twins and Target Field are an optimal fit for him. I can't see myself being too upset if the Twins were to sign him, as he is a good player, but I think it would be more prudent of the Twins to take the money it would cost to sign him and go after another starting pitcher, while letting Florimon provide similar value (albeit in a different manner) at a fraction of the cost.
  20. Trading Sano, Buxton, or Meyer for Price would infuriate me to no end. Not that Price isn't an elite pitcher, but he isn't worth that price for the Twins at this point. You make a deal like that when you are trying to go from 88 to 94 wins, not to try and go from 66 to 72. Like previous posters have said, it would be a Dayton Moore deal which to me seemed like a deal to try and make a "run at a postseason" (not a pennant, but an appearance, which doesn't do much for me), and save a job.
  21. You do realize he has thrown 450+ career big league innings, no?
  22. I agree I've been a big proponent of having an "ace reliver" rather than a proven closer for a long time now. Perkins should be used in the highest leverage situations, no matter the time of game. If the bases are loaded in a tie game in the 6th, have him put out the fire rather than someone who is worse and possibly not even get to use Perkins to save a win.
  23. If you want to judge a pitcher on 2 starts, go ahead. But I don't think it's the best idea.
  24. As much as I like Glen Perkins, Minnesota guy, great on Twitter, awesome pitcher, etc., from a team building standpoint, having Glen Perkins on this team is like me having rims and tinted windows on my 2004 Impala. Totally unnecessary. I would give them Perkins and their pick of any prospect behind Thorpe in the system rankings for Brett Anderson. Although this stupid hypothetical trade can never happen now that the A's acquired Jim Johnson. I would be ecstatic if the Twins acquired Anderson. It would be the most exciting thing to happen to the franchise since Byron Buxton played a low-A game in Cedar Rapids on FSN. Like Nick said, I don't think the injury risk is as bad considering the TJ is out of the way and the other injuries were not arm injuries.
  25. I don't like this at all. I mean, obviously the odds of him ever really becoming something are long, but I feel like he had more upside than a few guys on the 40. I always felt like if he ever got the chance to consistently start, he could have worked through some of the issues he had when he was up. I would be shocked if he passes through waivers. Someone will pick him up, and I hope he gets a chance to sink or swim in the bigs.
